In the music video Janet Jackson portrays a lounge singer during the time of apartheid in South Africa. The video is inspired by a blend of 1960s and 1970s South African culture, as evidenced by the Drum magazine, Lion beer, and "slegs Blacks" signs that were all over the country. These signs indicate that Black people were not allowed to use or enter certain areas. The dressing style of the people in the video was inspired by the work of Malick Sidibé and Seydou Keita, two photographers from Mali. The video is a powerful statement against racism and discrimination. It shows that even in the darkest of times, there is always hope and beauty. It also celebrates the rich culture and heritage of Black people.

Velvet Rope Era seriously untouchable. And Janet was a completely different spiritual embodiment on every single's video. Can't even tell this is the same person who had just dropped I Get So Lonely with Blackstreet a few months prior. Not to mention, she looks flawless here. Smile of an angel. Skin is immaculate. Barely looks like she's wearing any makeup. I know there's some there. But hardly.

That’s because the video directly references “real” photos from DRUM magazine (a South African publication noted chiefly for its early 1950s and 1960s reportage of township life under apartheid). It was stylised and directed as such. Therefore taking on a very “photogenic” or “painting esque” look (as you say). Madonna used to do the same in some of her videos (she used the same director Mark Romanek). What makes this a masterpiece, in my opinion, is it’s blatant celebration of black culture (be it South African or otherwise), it’s lack of whitewashing or watering down of black pride , and it’s display of “real” love for beauty within black community (not conventual at all in American terms). That might not sound like much in 2020 post Beyoncé, Lauren Hill, (and Rihanna to an extent). But at the time it had never been done on mainstream US media, let alone on MTV (so white). If you like how this video looks, try and get your hands on some old copies of DRUM magazine.

Got Til it's Gone is an amazing song, one of my favorite of her entire repertoire, and what about this gem of a video. Every shot could be hung for a photographic exhibition. I sincerely think that Janet brought more to the music than Michael. I know that it will not please but those who think the opposite do not know her discography. Musically Michael's music is exceptional but Janet brought in addition all these themes about her own experience (emancipation, social consciousness, sexual liberation, rewriting her personal development...). Musically what she produced in particular with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis never got old. She has always been a bit in the shadow of her brother's incredible legacy but she is simply the greatest artist of the last 40 years.

@@cocoafemme47 Yup nothing. However I just don't care for music which has such deep sampling. Also did a bit of digging on the song as it didn't cross my radar in 1997, but Janet Jackson was sued by Des'ree who thought the song was very similar to her own song "Feel So High" from her 1992 album Mind Adventures. In July 1998, she was awarded an out-of-court settlement granting her 25 per cent of the publishing royalties from the song; around £2 million. Des'ree later said she wanted Jackson to recognize that she had "borrowed" from her work and not given her credit. So a borrowed tune cut with readily distinguished sample gets a thumbs down from me. Sorry but that's my opinion. Video is great mind.

I don't think people understand how culturally significant this video is. This is black pride. How wonderful. The only other singer having that sort of pride was Nina Simone, and she paid the price for that. The rest of the African American singers are too worried about their careers to produce such a video. That includes Beyonce of course. Janet was and is the real deal.

I was the musically 'adventurous' of my friends and I had this album bumpin' around town for years clubbing, almost always the driver of all my super-macho 90's buddies and at first they gave me crap for owning this because all we listened to was punk, grunge, metal, Snoop, Dre, n others (all classic 90's stuff) etc. This was a car full of "guy" men. haha ...but eventually, all my dudes finally saw the pure genius of this album and loved it as much as I did.
