It was this program that caused me to become a fan of figure skating. Janet fell and yet still earned a 6.0.

She did not win the gold medal at the Olympics but the gold medal from millions of viewers. What a shiny person, what a smile on her face, coming so naturally, what elegance, what speed! And those spins! Watching a WOMAN skating likes this, as we now see kids rushing through the program, jumping quadruple jumps like robots, it gives me such a warm feeling in my heart. She really was ahead of time. Also watched the clip when she returned to Japan after many years and was regonized by the receptionist of the hotel, who handed over a message to her, that she was about to commited suicide but when she saw Lynn falling and standing up with a smile on her face, she gave up that plan...and Lynn burst into tears saying, saving her life the way she does was more valuable than winning a gold medal. Love and peace to you, Lynn. Thanks for showing us all your beauty!! May God bless every step you take!

@@mphrdldnYes, My parents loved her too! She was very popular appearing in a Japanese TV Commercial "Calpis" too. So it's called Calpico in USA. (Calpis is kind of a yogurt -like with lactic acid in it. It's supposed to be good for your stomach) And then, She was called The on ice Fairy in Japan. I Love Janet Lynn and Debby Boone!✨🧚🏻‍♀️⛸💖👸🎶👏😆💓

gator croc I can see why the Japanese press referred to her as “the Flying Swan.” Seriously, it’s like watching the most elegant bird in the word take a swim around your lake. She makes me cry, too. She and John Curry are the greatest skaters I’ve ever seen, They understand technique and musical interpretation like no other skaters I’ve seen before or since. KZfaq has Curry’s exhibit at the 76 Olympics where he won gold. He skates to “Scheherazade” and skates and interprets the music beautifully. Look at his face shortly before the performance ends. He is completely one with it.

I don't know much about figure skating, but this seems so graceful and elegant compared to today's style. The programs today looks like a series of gymnastic events roughly linked together. Set up, the move, obvious recovery, quickly begin the next set up, repeat. They may be much harder moves now, but it is vastly less appealing, at least to my eyes.

Can someone familiar with figure skater training tell me if the serious skaters take ballet up at the same time to help with grace and posture or do the coaches completely handle all the training? There are obviously many classic ballet movements used.

I don't understand how judging worked before factored placements under 6.0. Did the fall hurt her chances in capturing the silver? Could she have received more points to catch up to at least second place?
@michaelvaughn169

Until 1973, compulsory figures counted for 60% of the overall score. A skater who built up a large enough lead in figures was basically assured of winning. In the '68 Olympics, Peggy Fleming was ahead by approximately 180 points heading into the free skate. All she had to do was stand up to win the gold. In '72, Trixie Schuba - perhaps the greatest exponent of figures in the history of the sport - had an even larger lead. She had the gold medal won before the free skate even took place. It seems unfair by today's standards but those were the rules at the time. Any criticism levied against the system in an attempt to vindicate Janet's breathtaking free skate should not take away from the similarly impressive accomplishment of Ms. Schuba in compulsory figures.

That Olympiad showed great shortcomings. Beatrice Shuba won the already canceled compulsory program and showed poor skating in the free program and became an undeserved champion
@flywings111
@flywings111 Жыл бұрын
Trixie Schuba is NOT an undeserved champion. She was the strongest ever woman in compulsory figures which at that time made up 60% of the total score. She was so way ahead of others before the free skate that it was impossible to beat her. Those were the rules at that time so she won fair and square. Janet Lynn wasn't as strong in figures so even with a great free skate she didn't have a chance to win. You should accept it, and not cry like a baby that the American skater didn't win the gold medal.

She was considered the best American skater after Peggy Fleming, but JL never defeated PF because she was not as good at school figures, which also held her back internationally.

Who is pretending? People talk about it all of the time and her ability to smile afterwards and perform well from that moment is what endeared her to the Japanese people. She became a superstar there and inspired so many. In fact you can definitely see her influence in many Japanese figure skaters today as her qualities were instilled through various generations of coaching. That's why they have those soft knee bends and emphasis on blade work. Yuka Sato was probably the closest skater to emulate Lynn's style and her parents-coaches definitely instilled that in all of their skaters. Peggy Fleming even noticed how their skaters had such excellent knee bend and blade work while watching Arakawa and Suguri at 2001 Four Continents and admired it as that wasn't the most emphasized thing during that era outside of the top skaters. Also, the reigning Olympic bronze medalists, Maia & Alex Shibutani, are noted for their soft knees and ability to naturally and effortless ride the curves because their developmental coach early on was Lynn's coach.

She had a graceful style that we don’t see much of today. The top women skaters are concentrating on their most difficult jumps, and it interrupts the flow of their program. You see them lining up for their jumps. Lynn’s jumps were easier (fewer turns) but were integral to the flow of her program.
