Singapore Travel Tips 2019: 11 Things to Know Before Visiting Singapore!
Just wanted to share a few things i learned during my time in Singapore. Some because i'd done proper research, others because i'd made mistakes and some others well... i guess i just wasn't lucky!
Links mentioned:
Entry in to Singapore / visa Requirements
www.ica.gov.sg/enteringanddeparting
For Australian passport holders, you only need a visa for business or tourism if your visit is over 90 days, so for my stay in Singapore, i didnt need to apply for a visa or anything - as long as i had a valid passport, i was good to go.

if you live in Singapore then can you go and tell those street Cleaners in Orchard Road ''cleaning'' does not include attacking visitors with knifes and robbing their belongings.. i think the Singapore Police turn a blind eye to this because the cleaners are ''Malay'' so maybe they just don't want to highlight the issue that is so relevantly hidden and covered up..

Tip: The tissue packet as a table holder might not be the only things Singaporeans use to "chope"(reserve) tables. Umbrellas, water bottles, and sometimes even business passes for office workers. So to be safe try to pick an empty table or just pop a polite question if the seat is taken or not.

As a US physician who travels to Singapore every year, I've always wondered about emergency care. Next trip, I'll have to get over to Raffles, if only to say hello to the ER crew. You guys wouldn't be hiring, would you? Practicing there just might be a dream, but alas, I don't speak Mandarin. Or Hindi. Or Arabic.

It's not true that all clinics are closed on Sundays. The ones near your hostel may be closed but there are plenty in the neighborhoods that are open during the day on weekends. Consultation + medications for cough/flu/fever should be around a third of what you paid at Raffles.

Great tips!! My son and I were in Singapore in August, we loved it there and hope to return soon!! Not a tip for Singapore specifically but just for travel in general, pack a little cosmetic pack with over the counter medicines from the Chemist. Things like Cold and Flu tablets, nasal decongestant, panadol, cream for insect bites, bandaids, tablets for gastro (both types ie. To stop the diarrhea and to stop stomach cramps), aspirin, anti-inflammatory etc. That way if you have a cold or get an upset tummy you've got the basics to get you by in case you can't get to a doctor/chemist. Also if you have the kit before you go it means not having to spend money in countries where medicines can be very expensive.

Correction, most restaurants charge a 10% service charge and a 7% goods and services tax.(GST). Not all private clinics in Singapore are closed one weekends. They are some who are open on weekends and even public holidays. These clinics are mostly in the heartlands residential areas in the HDB (Housing and Development) areas. The charges varies from $30 plus to around $50 for tourists and locals alike. You can save up to a $100 or more compared to a hospital.

This local tissue-to-reserve-a-place habit started in the CBD food hawker centres where office workers rush out at noon for their 1hr lunch. Just like a virus, it has spread to hawker centres and airconditioned food courts in malls everywhere. Someone started selling packets of tissues with the word 'Choped' printed on it, where 'Choped' is the local word for 'Reserved'. 😀

Hi Janice, I'm a Singaporean here. Go to a family clinic that opens 24 hours, the cost range should be around $50 - $100 (depend on the medication), most of the family clinics are usually located at neighbourhood area. Anyway, I will be traveling on my first trip to Sydney next month. Hope you have more recommendation coming up :)

Great tips on how to get cash! Haha love that you said you always use credit card in Australia, something we also always encourage people to do to maximize the earning rewards. In our case is the airline points hahah 👍🏻

There are clinics that open on weekends around residential neighbourhood. Going to the hospital really does cost a lot.

Another item people usually use to 'chope' seats in a hawker centre is an umbrella so do take note during your next trip

🤣 yeah the tissue is used to "chope" seats is very important to foreigners! Very good point to include! 👍🏻 I think for $100++ at a private hospital, is considered OK. If you go to a public hospital, may be cheaper for singaporeans not sure if there are any subsidies for tourist, but waiting time is a lot longer. In Singapore it is not cheap to see the doctor, most clinics 1 visst will easily set you back at least $50 and above. You will be better off getting some medications from the pharmacies which are open everyday. Even most 7-11 sells some basic medications.

Tissue is to “chop” the seats so that we can get back with our food and our seat is not occupied by others Going to a polyclinic will be much cheaper than hospital, but longer waiting time. The buses is actually cheaper than mrt so taking bus is a better option and most of the shopping malls and attractions has bus stop which sometimes nearer than mrt stations

Spending four days at SG this coming December on my way to the Philippines for Christmas. Good advice about the SIM card, thank you. Hotels and airbnb are expensive in SG, so the cheaper I can make it the better. Just used the MRT fare calculator, and Changi airport to Chinatown is now S$2.10. Excellent value compared to the subway in London.

Hi Janice. Tip for tourist who needs to see a GP on weekends or midnight, there is always a 24hr clinics open 365days. Just google "24hr clinics". For "normal" fever like yours it normally costs less than half of what you paid, somewhere between $60 - $80.

There is a free Singapore tour booth in Changi Airport if you're transitting for atleast 8 hours (if I'm not wrong, could be more than 8h). You can lookout for the booth in the transit area of changi airport or just ask the information counter. The tour will bring you on a tour bus around Singapore to some tourist attraction. Pretty good deal 😁
