It takes a lot of courage for a violinist like Jansen to play this as an encore. She's amazing. To non violinists it probably sounds more beautiful than difficult. If you're a fiddle player and you've worked on unaccompanied Bach you know how scary it is to play the G minor adagio. Incredibly tough challenges for bow control and precise intonation -- the slightest bow crunch would be audible. But if you can pull it off -- and she does -- it's breathtaking.

O.K. The breath and release of tension in that opening quadruple stop just fractured my mind. I can't hear this piece any other way now.

In 60 years of loving Bach and Playing and Conducting Bach, I have never heard this played better. I went back and listened to Perlman…it is still great, but this young woman was here in touch with something of the music of the spheres…divine revelation if you will. Truly gooseflesh producing. And DO GO TO TWOSET TO UNDERSTAND HOW INCREDIBLY DIFFICULT this is and the incredible control she showed. Remarkable…

I never gave Bach fair consideration until I heard her perform this piece; I always have been about the Beethoven. But good God - the devastating undulation of emotions; the gorgeous nuance and delicacy with which she tears your heart out and shreds it to pieces. Im in tears, and I'm in awe. I will watch anything this spellbinding sorceress has recorded. Thanks, twoset, for bringing me here.

Bach is deep. 1000 feet deep. Bottomless and dark kind of deep. Get to know the Sonatas & Partitas for unaccompanied violin -- it's a TON of music so take your time getting to know it. And then the Bach 6 Suites for cello (also lovely when performed on viola). Enjoy! It's music you'll carry with you in your head for the rest of your life.

@@michaelstrauss5424 Are those irked or judgmental emojis? Thanks, I could use a laugh today. There's always one, it seems. I don't have to review the score, I believe you about that absolutely. I mean not to minimize Bach's talent, in fact the first portion of my comment implies clearly how he has grown in my consideration. My intent nonetheless remains primarily to celebrate the performer, HERE. Perhaps, I suspect, she is not a favorite of yours? Bach may have intended the composition to convey just such an effect - and glory therein to his memory, by God - but how often have you heard it performed so engagingly, skillfully and cathartically? Certainly, a benchmark in my experience. My stated points, I believe, remains relevant and undiminished, and I stand by them.

Have you found Bach's Chaconne yet? Johannes Brahms wrote of Bach's Chaconne, "On one stave, for a small instrument, the man writes a whole world of the deepest thoughts and most powerful feelings. If I imagined that I could have created, even conceived the piece, I am quite certain that the excess of excitement and earth-shattering experience would have driven me out of my mind" Bach is the sun by whose light all musical arts which followed are trees nourished.

That violin is over 300 years old. It has witnessed a succession of it's lovers grow great, caressing it, loving it, making it sing, grow old, and die. As it grows in value, as it's memories of their caresses, it feels a greater and greater loss, until it sings it's pain as sweetly as this one, under its most recent lover's gentle encouragement.

What I like about this is her understanding of the phrasing and overall structure of the piece. These Bach adagios have layer upon layer of subtleties, and there is no one right way to play them in order to bring them out. But there are plenty of ways to play them that just sound like notes. This performance is way more than just notes!

This piece is so interesting to learn. While Perlman's version sound like a duet, Jansen's version sound like a solo violinist. But both are stunning. (On a personal note, I love the duet effect that Perlman created with this piece).

Yeah ! I hear that's one of the most greatest Adagio by J.S.Bach which every violinist try to play it so far. I was moved so much Jansen's adagio touch, splendid, wonderful, excellent. especially in the 16 note passages by way of heart-rending ornament. I would feel listening to some story that is singing in perfect sorrow at most, I wonder if it might be Agony! En respuesta a: (Buibuiopolis Mayor hace 7 años This piece is so interesting to learn. While Perlman's version sound like a duet, Jansen's version sound like a solo violinist. But both are stunning. (On a personal note, I love the duet effect that Perlman created with this piece)).

I always find it surprising when even a virtuoso as outstandingly accomplished as Jansen hasn't taken the trouble to find a chinrest that actually fits her. It's clear from the early frames of this performance that her rest is nowhere near suitable for her physique and violin hold. What non-players probably don't understand is the terrible price so many violinists and violists pay in terms of serious injury. When you see that someone like Jansen, who has worked with the best teachers, still has poor ergonomics you begin to understand why. There is also a great deal of tension in her jaw, neck and shoulders, and in her extreme Galamian-style bow-hold. This is not a safe way to play the violin! Violin pedagogy really needs to be focusing on teaching technique that doesn't injure the players. The principles are well understood, but very few teachers seem to honour them.
