Janis was the Real deal. She had a connection to the Blues because she had lived with rejection, pain, and depression for all of her short life. The most Soulful, Passionate, and Honest female blues singer of our time. Monterey was a real turning point, as she had never done a concert of that magnitude before. Big Brother’s Nasty guitar intro makes my hair on my neck stand up every time I hear it, and that’s just the beginning ! Janis once said that she made love to 20 thousand people on stage, and then went home alone. A sad story, but such a wonderful talent whose memory will last forever. Rest In Peace

Ball and Chain is originally a Big Mama Thornton song - the godmother of rock n roll! This performance was 1967 Monterey Pop Festival and Janis KILLED IT. And that's Mama Cass in the audience getting her mind blown along with everyone else.

This was 1967. The musicians are all so elevated they can hardly play, but Janis shines like a jewel. I'm gonna recommend you watch the entire documentary that this video's taken from, Monterey Pop. There are incredible performances from legendary artists and the genuine flavor of the '60s. Great reaction.

🙌👏🎶‼️✌️The year was 1967 and the venue was the Monterey County Fairgrounds. I was there to experience her and Jimi Hendrix who both catapulted to national attention from this very weekend! Many others too numerous to mention. It was so special for me as I had grown up in the area and spent every year at this arena only watching horse shows! This was life changing! I got to see Janis 2 years later at the Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco the building couldn't contain her as she blew the doors off! Thanks for bringing this today👋✌️🎶

Dom- I was at this very performance in ‘67. Yes, I’m an old fart- now you know!! This was a Big Mama Thornton song! Big Mama also first sang “ Hound Dog” which Elvis made famous. Janis could sing two notes at the same time with her growls. She was 24 at this show. She was a member of the 27 Club with Morrison, Hendrix, Amy Winehouse and Kurt Cobain.

I had a chance to see Janis Joplin in 1970 but there were two big music festivals happening that summer and I could only afford to go to one. I chose the one with Led Zeppelin and Iron Butterfly. It was not long after that she passed. I wish I had been able to afford both. There will never be another Janis Joplin. She was unique.

"Cry Baby" and "Work Me Lord " are two you shouldn't miss. The live versions. Incredible! This song was by Big Mama Thornton . When Janis asked permission from her to sing it, Big Mama Thornton said, "Sure, just don't f### it up". She didn't. She put it on the map. She was 24 when she did this and was unknown at the time. She died 3 years later a legend.

First off... Love you and your reactions !! as a side note. Janis Joplin and Big Brother and the Holding Company (relative "Unknowns" from San Francisco) played the first day of Monterey, to rave reviews. The cinematographer, D.A. Pennebacker, was late to arrive and the first day was not recorded on film, so the promoters (this year the promoters were John and Michelle Phillips. "half" of the very popular group, "The Mama's and the Papa's". (That's why "Mama" Cass Elliot was featured in the recording) invited Janis back on the last day to perform "Ball & Chain" again, to be filmed. Her backing group feared Janis would be signed leaving them to fend for themselves. The promoters also informed a bunch of "record labels", that this sensational women was going to perform again on the last day, so about 8 record companies offered her a contract, and she signed with Clive Davis from Colombia Records, contingent that her band be signed with her. The rest, as they say... "Is history" !!

This was the infamous 'Summer Of Love' in the Bay Area. Many people thought she would have made it sooner if she had a different band. Big Brother was widely acknowledged as the worst backing band ever. Janis made them passable. Janis was beset with self-image problems and never quite got those inner thoughts to shut-up. I had recurring episodes of laryngitis in high school and when I had it I did a pretty fair imitation of Janis. The problem with that was I always got over the laryngitis and my old crappy voice came back. I would always pray that my "sick" voice would lock in, but it never did. Thanks Dom for your comments and demonstrations, I always love those. If I had your voice you wouldn't be able to shut me up. Janis, Jimi Hendricks and Jim Morrison of The Doors all died at 27 years old. I think Janis was 23-24 at Monterey. Also the lady in the crowd they kept flashing to was Mama Cass Elliot from the Mamas and Papas. She also died early at 32 of heart problems.
