This song was always bittersweet to me because it came out when she died or right after she died in 1971. American Pie talks about the day that music died, 1971 was the year that music died: Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix and Jim Morrison. All 27 and at their peak, all beginning to expand into new territories. The Doors just released the classic LA Woman when Jim died and Jimi was exploring blues and jazz when he died. And Janis was branching out into other areas including this song written by the great country songwriter (and later actor) Kris Kristofferson. she makes it into a country rocker with Janis' inimitable style and raspy flair..

This lady could sing! Sadly we lost her too soon. She was only 27 when she died. "Me & Bobby McGee" is one of my favorites by her but she had a lot of great songs such as "Piece Of My Heart", "Cry Baby", "Down On Me", "Maybe", "Little Girl Blue", "Ball & Chain", "Summertime", "Try (Just A Little Bit Harder)", "Get It While You Can", "Bye, Bye Baby", "Move Over" & her original song "Mercedes Benz".

A female artist whose song starts off slow and builds in to a rocker while her vocal stylings change along with it is Pat Benatar in "Hell Is For Children." But, not only is Pat stellar on the track and the track itself a banger, the lyrics and message of the song were pertinent then, and remains so now. Ms. Benatar's live performances of the track are usually riveting, but for a first time listen I do recommend the 2008 studio remaster.

My bad, Janis and Jimi actually died in the fall of 1970 and Morrison in the summer of 1971 so they were all within a year of each other. You should check out the movie Festival Express (you can find it free on the internet) about these series of concerts in Canada in 1970 and all of the groups travelled together by private train to various cities and performed - kind of like Wood stock by rail. Janis Joplin (only a few months before she died), The Grateful Dead, The Band, Buddy Guy, etc. Great scene on the train where Jerry Garcia tells Janis he fell in love with her the first time he saw her. Great concert footage including two by Janis who is amazing as usual and having a great time and the Dead and the Band are at their peak...

For a 60s to 70s era female my favorite is Susan Jacks who was part of a group with her husband called the Poppy Family. She had “Good friends”. “Which way you going Billie” “ I thought of you again”. Greatest Canadian female singer of the period.

I would love to see some reactions to Bonnie Bramlett. She put out music with her husband as Delaney and Bonnie. Bonnie has that special quality in her voice. a lot like Janis. Bonnie sings the blues and rock with passion and soul. She is a phenomenon. Check out some of these Delaney and Bonnie songs: Dirty Old Man, Lay Down My Burden, The Love of My Man, and the incredible song, They Call It Rock and Roll Music. There are lots of live videos of her but the album cuts are probably the best way to hear her first. Then check her out live. Bonnie Bramlett is incredible!!!

The song was written by Kris Kristofferson and the story behind him writing it is very interesting. I'm in the minority but I think his rendition is so much more soulful. Also considering the song was about a women named Bobbie McKee, but Kris thought he guy who told him the name said it was Bobbie McGee. Do yourself a favor and listen to Kris sing it live. What he says before he starts sing " If it sounds Country, then that's what it is, a Country song"

@w.geoffreyspaulding6588 2 жыл бұрын
@@victoriabarr255 well, Victoria…..Helene here….I just looked it up in Urban Dictionary. It would appear we could both be correct. As quoted there “The more sanitized version considers the "Harpoon" as a slang word for harmonica. The second interpretation considers it a hypodermic needle, since a bandana was often used to tie off the arm before an addict shot up” Sep 26, 2005. “I took my harpoon, and my dirty red bandana”. What possible reason would the lyrics include mention of a bandana unless it related to the “harpoon”? And in my mind, knowing what a harpoon looks like, and what it’s used for, is it more logical to think of a comparison to a needle or a harmonica? I think we both know the. Answer to that. So perhaps Harpoon had a double meaning g here….a play on words so that it could mean both things….

Those two are my all time favorite female singers, no other one women reach their level in my opinion, they are the two queen in the pantheon with the gods of rock and roll. To finish Amy is really worth it you will not be disappointed and more janis too please, and you two are amazing, you really listen to the music and that's something really rare these days and that's why I recommend you amy i know that you will be able to listen and take the full power of it.
