In spite of all her emotional baggage, Janis Joplin was an awesome blues singer, and easy to love. I grew up in this era, listening to her, Hendrix, Doors, Cream, and so many more great bands at that time. Janis remains ever a tragic figure. I don't think she ever realized that many of her fans really loved her, cared about her, and still weep when we reflect on her all too early passing.

She didn’t actually sing. She screamed and yelled. That’s why I consider Bobby McGee her finest work. You can actually hear her pull off musical notes in that song and it was very good. She had a nice voice….if only she would have calmed down with the screaming so we could hear that lovely voice.

Janis died when I was 11 and I really started listening to her music in the mid 70's when I was 15 or 16. Back then she looked to me so much older than the other rock musicians that I was into. Now I look at her and she looks like a child that someone should have protected from what was about to happen. What an absolute serious talent that drugs robbed all of us from seeing fulfilled. This era of music was original and it was fantastic. I truly feel sorry for younger people that don't know what it is like to be in high school and have a band like Zeppelin or Pink Floyd or Bad Company come out with a new album.

When talking about women singers there is Janis Joplin, and there is everybody else. I often wonder what would've happened if she wasn't living fame during those wild times. +musiclover6133 I'd say not the only one but as wrong as the other to think so IMO having just watched 2 visits. He's reaching for what to talk about. It's what he did on most of his interviewers I've seen. It tasted to me like he clearly loves her music, spirit, presence; and feels the awkwardness of his limitations to reach inside and pull something out that others haven't ... the pt of his show at that time, when nobody dug into reality in talkshow interviews -- which were generally more like extended advertisements bathed in vanilla redundancy. a lot of subsequent interviewers got to be more interesting in later interviews becuz Cavett's show was so popular mid70s for breaking out of standard topic ruts. But that didn't make it easy to get an artist who communicated the ways Janis's work did to deliver the same level of communication in a Q&A format, that wasn't what she was about. Cavett's way, unless circumstance predefined the subject for that particular guest, was to poke around randomly until something sparked the guest to run with the conversation. I think what tastes like condescension to some here is just Cavett feeling awkward abt not having found that trigger to set her off talking.
@kylewhitehead1684
@kylewhitehead1684 7 жыл бұрын
Dick Cavett has become my favourite talk show host. His interviews felt natural and Janis clearly didn't think he was being condescending or anything like that. In fact, I've heard some people say he had a thing for her. I think that's probably closer to the mark in explaining his manner in his interviews of her.

Good lord, where does the time go? She was beautiful in every sense of the word. I'm floored that she could, in a matter of a few seconds, go from interview back into song and just knock it dead. I slip into periods where I almost forget Janis was here, but thankfully I always come rambling back to her music. Life is like that....

Just one more thing, when Janis died, the world lost an awesome, beautiful, crazy talented singer....I lost my best friend AND babysitter. She took care of me from 67 to 69. I was very young yes, but remember every little thing we did when she took care of me. Couldn't understand at the time, why this lady would scream thru this microphone at me! I thot, omg she really thinks she can sing!! lol. funny, lil kids...aren't they? We would make ice cream sometimes...like lavender ice cream, rum icecream, gosh it was good! I'd always make her those spin art pictures, member those? U put like a card board piece of paper on this little machine & it'd spin as fast as u wanted & u had like lil squeeze bottles of colored paints & no matter what, the art work would turn out awesome! She'd hang them in her bedroom, over her bed. My brothers used to help her bring groceries in...from her psychodellic convertible Porsche, she'd toss them a couple quarters & they'd be so FN happy! She always had so many people at her house, they all loved me, I was about 4-5 yrs old...I can't completely remember, but I will just let it rest as this.....Jim Morrison was there alot, I know it was him that used to bounce me on his knee, I know it! Anyway, great times, probably the best I'll ever have, times were so much better then, so much. I love u Yanny (that's what I called her). miss u bad!

Phaedra D. We have lost good talented singers. To drugs and the music business cares more about the equity of the money they're making off them! They business rarely makes a hard effort. To get them to stop! If you doubt me! Elvis manager Tom Colonel Parker. When on the road with Elvis on the last tour they did in 77 before he died! And his hairdresser Larry said. It look like Elvis didn't OD but it had too many pills! Larry said that they had a bowl and ice water sticking Elvis face in it. To get Elvis revived. And Larry said all the sudden he heard a big knock on the door! And he's like who would be up here Knocking. That's pretty unusual this time of day and it would be hard for them to get past security. Larry said he went to the door and it was Elvis's manager Tom Colonel Parker. And he said we're is Elvis? Larry said he in the bed. We think he's took too many pills. Larry said Tom Colonel Parker went in there for about an hour! Then he walked out and said... Larry said he was thinking that Tom Colonel Parker was going to say something like when this tour is over Elvis needs to go to a program for help! But he said the only thing that matters. And I mean that the only thing that matters that this man is on stage performing tonight! Tom love the percentage of the equity he made from Elvis. But he didn't love Elvis or he would have got him help!

I would listen to her albums over and over. One of the first woman rockers to influence my life. Dad would go out on the road to do business, right away- my brother and I would have lots of friends over to parrrrty! We would all dance to 70s rock, drink beer and smoke weed.... till it eventually got ugly due to my brother hitting heroin. Regardless, still the very best of rock singers amongst them was, of course- Janis. I loved how she could give a shit what you or anyone else thought of her and how she was sooo in her element with a microphone. I still remember every single line of most all of her songs. The day she died I remember being genuinely bummed for about 3 days. I was only 12 years old. She'll forever rock my soul!

I am 68 years old and grew up in So CA. When we would have love-ins at Griffith Park sometimes Janis Joplin would come and sing for free, as well as Jefferson Airplane (later Jefferson Starship), and lots of other bands every weekend. When Janis was there she put on a great show, loving us, and we passed around the weed, there were no bad diseases yet, like HIV/aids. Most people in that era didn't know that heroin is a strong opioid and too much can cause respiratory failure just like fentanyl, which is what happened to Janis. We never heard the word opioid or what they can do causing you to stop breathing. If you love Janis check out Courtney Hadwin, bringing rock and soul back to a new generation and putting real musicians back to work again instead of using computer generated sound that put musicians out of work. What goes around comes around and maybe every 50 years a true talent shines their light on us. Courtney will be at the 50th anniversary of Woodstock this coming August, the youngest person invited to perform at the Woodstock reunion and for good reason.
