Lol imagine all the elders Elders: she was ummm an overly friendly person. She... was really liked. Had... a healthy appetite. She oozed passion...& uh, it came out in her creativity. Imagine the youngens Youngens: sooooo... what ure saying is she got smashed alot? Or, I mean... she believed in ... unifying? To be 1? Like... all that peaceful happy hippy Mary jan- Mary & Jesus stuff?! K got u. Elders: as long as u got "it" Youngens: yessir 🥴. I mean I could've honestly done w/ out knowing. But I figured for her time, it goes w/ out saying. 😔 sigh. Now I feel like this is a little tainted now. But also not really bc im not her. I know she passed but she would've been up there by now. & no1 wants to talk about old ppls seredes however u spell that

It's hard for me not to tear up because of all these things when I listen.

I lost my first-born nephew to addiction in 1977 following an accidental overdose. He was just 19, brilliant and musically talented. My family still wonders what he might have become. I know your family mourns your sister’s lost future, as well. Janis was clearly struggling, for sure. Usually in those days,l 1960s-70s, street drugs were fairly diluted. The story was that Janis was visiting in LA and bought some unusually strong heroin that caused her to overdose. The police reports were that others in the city who passed away who had. bought their stuff from the same dealer. The whole world must wonder what Janis’ future might have been. Heaven forbid it would have included Fentanyl, that has taken so many lives!!!! I’m so sorry for your loss! ❤

@@elizabethcloutman8913 Drugs are for mugs. No excuses, if someone decides to excuse themselves from the gene pool by being stupid enough to OD on drugs then so be it. A lot more great people have died doing noble deeds than consuming substances that they know is going to damage them. These are the people that we should be remembering and celebrating. If you are dumb enough to OD on drugs then maybe that's a sign. A sign that you are not really as great as you think you are. I love her voice and energy but obviously have no intention of placing her on a pedestal because she was thick enough to kill herself with drugs. Now Charles Darwin, there is someone that we can all feel proud of and celebrate.

Janis and I used to sip plum wine together in the office at the Family Dog on the Great Highway back in 1969. I moved to Marin in '70, and used to party at her house up the canyon in Larkspur. I have a poem she wrote where the last line is "After I got what I wanted, found out it cost me my mind." Prophetic. We were all stunned and deeply moved at her passing, but she got into hard drugs, just like Michael Bloomfield. I still miss them both.

Who knows? The whole poem, maybe. My address book from those days is filled with names of SF musicians that went on to become famous, as well as other characters. But back then, it was laid back, casual, and nobody had made it big - yet.

***** I'm sorry but to me they sound typical of the singers these days - too deliberate and self conscious with a tendency to go for soaring vocals at the expense of real emotion. that's just my personal opinion, I'm sure others disagree. Thanks for the suggestions though.

Gustavo Ferreira Gustavo, I saw at the Monterey Pop festival when I was twelve. A truly inspired performance that blew my pubescent mind. I grew around the city from '62 to '73. I was born there but my path started in '62. She was the apple of my young stupid heart. When she died I realized it was not a game. No fun after that. She is Missed.

Will Itig Aside from being such a great performer, she was such a free spirit that it cut across in the grooves in her albums And, I don't think there's such a thing as an ugly free spirit. Free spirits are by nature beautiful ppl. I think that's the way it works. Anyway, like a lot of ppl, I always felt like she was talking to me thru her songs, that she felt what I was feeling, that she hurt just like I was hurting, but that it was gonna be alright in due time. *("I know you're unhappy, oh, baby, i know, honey I know just how you feel.")*

Will Itig *"had've?"* "HAD HAVE?" I believe you meant to say "would've," maybe. Or, to put it more precisely, in your vernacular, *"would of."* Janis was a smart cookie and very articulate. Check out her interviews with Dick Cavett, for instance. Cavett, a very mamby-pamby wordy talk show host, gets his clock cleaned by that tiny 'lil 'ol gal from Port Arthur, Texas. Haha! Naw, my fine feathered illiterate fella, Janis never *"would of"* taken the least bit of interest on a silly boy using BAD English. And, you better know it. HAHA!
