Janu Shirshasana C is supposed to stimulate the roots of the navel, which is one of the places where we feel our primitive connection with other beings, through the visceral memory of the umbilical cord.
But what of that connection? Why does it elude us? And why do we not recover a lucid sense of it with a simple turn of attention? Must we hold our breath and contort our limbs, just to see what is most obvious?
What connects is not an imaginary thread that joins the centers of our bellies, but the womb of awareness in which we all float. The womb is the common presence of the divine that we find within us all.
That presence is first uncovered beneath the twirling of these anxious and fearful minds, as a presence of awareness untouched by desire, memory, or time. This presence is always here, as our innermost awareness, holding space for the swarm of our experience.
This is something that we share, as plain as the ground beneath our feet, and we can all know it with the same clarity. For we are all immersed in this presence, and we cannot be drawn out and estranged from it, because there is nowhere else to be.
These are not the words of religion or philosophy but of what could be called “common sense” because they are confirmable by anyone who is moved to real reflection. And they bring us back to the same commonplace, the same singular ground that spreads itself out so graciously, and supports us all from beneath.
And when we lay our attention down upon that sacred ground, it warms our bodies from within and makes them resonate with natural kindness and love.
