I came to the U.S. in 2012 on a student visa for my Master's degree. After graduating, reality hits. Met my wife (a Nigerian-born American), and the path to green card was smooth. Even with that, getting a job as a biochemist was hard. I worked in a restaurant (5 months), C.N.A (5 months), and a group home (2 years) while taking all my prerequisites to study medicine as a PA. Went back to school and graduated in 2020. Now working as a Neurocritical care PA in a hospital here in NYC. Since graduated, I have held my own private PA job, working for health insurance companies to medically assess their clients, and I have moved from one hospital to another with lots of opportunities. It's not always easy at the beginning, but it's possible when you don't dwell too long in one place.

Please, what is advice for a Ph.D. holder in his late 40s who moved to the US? He has a PhD in the life sciences. What is the surest way to success and confortability? I understand that the pay for a postdoctoral position is very poor.

How much debts (student loan, house, cars, credit cards, clothing, feeding, childcare, etc.) including your wife do you have, and what's your household income...if you work a lifetime, when will you pay them off? Immigrants think the natives and people before them were stupid, and they end up poor or less-than average? You'll soon find out that you're not living but surviving, modern work-slave with no life but work, loneliness, and traumize.

@@commentthin Your brain is as thin n thick . A Nero PA wont make less than $11k per month for 30/35hrs per week of work. That will be a low ball, depending on state. Some without private practice will do 250k per year or more. sey na $2m he paid for school wey hin go pay for lifetime? Almost all NP in my circle used money de made during covid to pay off all student loans. some even almost done with their mortgages. gtfo with your hatred . As a Nigerian who has lived in the US for many years, and has visited UK, France, and some other 10 other countries, this is the summary of my advice Abroad is not for everybody (1). I have met many Nigerians that were happy but also met many that have regrets. 1. I met a Nigerian guy, he was crying where was working as a security guard. He told me his story. When he was in Nigeria, he was a manager of a milk factory owned by. He owned a house, 2 plots of land in Lagos, two cars, married with 3 children. He sold everything, and japa to US where the only job he found was a security guard. To make things worse, he had no papers, so there was no end in sight to his predicament.

Madam u are 100% on point. This takes me back to our main prob in Nigeria; forming and entitlement. I left Nigeria as a SBO in a new generation bank, but when I arrived in USA my first job was shoes picker for online storage facility. Ol'boy, I never knew I get skills for shoes picking, bcos while those yankee doodles are on 6 shoes me do pick 60...emi omo oro. 3 months for that job I became a supervisor. Right now Im a RN and doing okay, but like my pple will say "Isale oro l'egbin". About vacation time, most work will start you with 80hrs which is like 2 weeks. Only govt job and few other employers will give you more. That's is the difference btw USA and some European countries like Italy, Spain etc. America is a capitalist countries and does not give time off like other countries.

Your American experience is unique to you, and everyone's journey is different. Starting out, you might face challenges and make mistakes, but that's normal. It's okay if you're not doing well immediately. However, if you're still struggling after several years, it's worth reflecting on your choices and the company you keep. America rewards hard work, not just physical labor but also skills and intelligence. If you have valuable skills and work hard, you're likely to succeed. Unlike in some places, where even if you're skilled and intelligent, finding a job can be tough.

At the end of the day you as an individual has to find where it pays you. Not everyone in Naija is suffering. Some are. Likewise, not everyone abroad is suffering. Some are. Coming abroad has worked out well for me. It was tough at first but over time things got better and I cannot complain. But that is me. I wouldn't tell someone from Nigeria to come because things worked out for me. It may not work for them the same way. You have to have a plan for yourself. There are no guarantees in life. At times you've got to take a gamble.

Abroad is not for everybody (4) I live in the US but went to London some years back. I met a Nigerian lady in a restaurant. She was a 28 year old single woman with 2 children. From our interaction, she wanted me to visit her house, which I declined, she then offered to visit my hotel, which I declined also. She wanted to be my friend, wanted to hold my hands...I could tell that she has been lonely for years, but I was cautious, since I did not know anything about her, mental state, prior history....etc

Abroad is not for every body (5) My friend told me this story many years ago. He is a lawyer, and stopped over in London for a few days on the way to the US. He attended a party, where about 4 women introduced themselves to him. One offered to marry him and give help him to get resident papers, He was in shock. Literally, he just met this woman for about 3 hours. He said he spoke with some Nigerians in London, who told him that Nigerian women outnumber men about ratio 8-2 and very hard for a young woman to get married and raise a family. So, what happens to the women I asked. "They are just there, 25, 28, 30, 34, 40, etc...

Abroad is not for everybody (2) I met a Nigerian scientist, about 20 years ago in the US. He told me his story, he was crying when he told me the story. He had a PhD in biochemistry. I think he was director of a federal agency. He ended up in elementary school, teaching all subjects in a "ghetto" school. Kids used to laugh at his accents, and ask him if he had seen a car or a house before. His biggest regret was that his knowledge, research, PhD was wasted. Maybe, he was able to recover later, I don't know, but as at the time I met him, he was a sad man

Abroad is not for everybody (3) I met a lady many years back. When I met her, she was about 30 years, married and had two children. I think the plan was for her to go first and later bring the family but it did not work out that way. She had no resident papers. With tears in her eyes, she used to tell me things like "today my daughter is 10, today my son is 12, today my mother is 60" today my husband is 40" She was working as a maid, and had no resident permit. I have no idea how her story ended.

The difference between people in abroad and Nigeria are: 1. No godfather to get a job 2. Don't have to sleep with foolish old ogas to get promotion or retain a job by so-called target. Remember the lady who committed suicide in the bank recently? 3. You can work your way up in abroad as long as you engage in a CPD to obtain the certified qualifications, and not sleeping with men for promotion.. 4. In the abroad, you have a system that works and allows everyone to exist. 5. In the abroad they have petrol, diesel and nothing like a subsidy. 6. There is light, water and no kidnapping for ransom.

Daddy freeze always ask them of the bills they pay. They always talk of money, job, good pay blah blah, yet when they get all the good pay the system collects it back I'm the name of bills. Let them tell us that side. What's the point earning $2000 a month yet blls takes 80% of that. You end IP saving the rest to renew your papers and the cycle continues the next year. That's why most of them can't send good money back home to their aged parents. Their only advantage is the fall of the naira, so when they send peanuts to Nigeria, it turns into Millions and the people here will be thinking they're millionaires over there. I bet you if the exchange rate is the same for dollar and naira, that's when you'll know a lot of them abroad are not better off financialy than most people here in Nigeria.

Abroad is different to different people. There is not one reality but multiple ones related to ones background, professional experience, education, values, personality, exposure, attitude ect... Not everyone can clean oyingbo yiensh. Even for that u need to have the minimum medical skills to do so. Then I don't think it is a standard situation for anyone who wants to japa. Truth of the matter there are a lot of small jobs for migrants in the US and across EU. It goes from fast food work to nannies jobs. When u r not a national of a western country this is the path which is the most expected unless u have an international background and experince enabling u to compete with different job categories.

The problem here is the cheap popularity Nigeria gives them gets into their heads. Nollywood actress no be status in productive terms. Na by chance fame. Maybe even through promiscuity. Abroad you must be of service, true service to society, bcos those systems work. You can't cheat or blab your way to the top. You came abroad and was placed exactly at your actual profitability levels. Simple. If you were a practicing doctor, Architect or the likes, you would not even come online to make videos. It will feel beneath you. There is beauty and dignity in Labour. Most Nigerians learn when they arrive in societies that work. If you are humble with skills, you will just fit in normally. Making hair, plumbing, sports etc. You will excel. Most of these unproductive people who cut corners in Nigeria think they can do so elsewhere.

But if you arrive with a visitor visa and you have to find documents to work, life is going to be rough at the beginning. Like Cynthia, I'm sure she came in on a visitor visa and empty pocket. You can't even go back to college if you don't have a green card, so you're stuck. The guy you're talking about must have had a green card from the beginning.
