Satoko Elisabeth Kitahara was a Japanese Roman Catholic. Kitahara was descended from aristocrats and samurai warriors. She worked in an airplane warehouse during World War ll and became dillusioned after she and others learnt of Japanese atrocities during the conflict. She discovered Roman Catholicism and after a period of being exposed to churches decided to learn the catechism so she could be baptized.
After failing to enter religious life, Satoko instead gave up her life to live among the poor and outcast, preaching the gospel.
Pope Francis declared Satoko "Venerable" in 2014. The very first steps towards sainthood. If canonized, this would make her the first non martyred Japanese Saint.

WOW! There is hope in Japan then Jerome. Thank you so much for this posting. My 14 yo son is learning Japanese and is very inclined to this culture. We might be sending him for an exchange program to learn Japanese too. He says he wants to live there and because the history of Japan of being one of those countries very difficult to convert including St Francis Xavier didn't have success there, I am very hesitant to agree to all the Japanese culture. ☹️ I hope we can go visit Our Lady of Akita in 2 years. But, this gives me hope. There is nothing impossible for God. 😇 And, I will definitely, definitely be praying now to Venerable Sakoto now for the intercession of the conversion of my son.

Speaking as a Catholic who studies Japanese, the Nagasaki area in particular has a much higher number of Catholics and an amazing history. My Japanese teacher went to university there, and he said roughly half his classmates had names like Maria or Michael. The Japanese church is small, but incredibly strong; they survived underground, with extreme persecution, for over 500 years. Their faith is awe-inspiring. As for Japanese mainstream culture, I'd encourage you to watch or read what your son watches and discuss the moral themes with him. I've been surprised by how well some anime or manga overlaps with Christian ideals, and saddened by the lack of overlap in others; but a lot of it really is good. If you help your son learn to talk through the bad and the good and understand what they're teaching him about life, you'll be giving him an amazing tool for handling media.

@@lapitufitaazul I second Nagasaki. Nishizaka Hill, the site where St. Paul Miki and his companions were martyred can be seen from the city - the site was specifically chosen for that purpose, as a warning to the Christians living there. Nagasaki is also where St. Maximilian Kolbe lived for a number of years, and he even built a shrine to Our Lady of Lourdes in the hills, as well as founding a printing house for the Japanese edition of his Knights Imaculata magazines (which, to my understanding, is still Japan's most widely circulated Christian publication). Brother Zeno, mentioned in the video, stayed behind and continued running St. Maximilian Kolbe's mission in Nagasaki when he was called back to Poland. Then there is Urakami Cathedral, which was built by the surviving hidden Christians when they were finally allowed by the Japanese government to worship in public; if I recall correctly it is built on the site of the family mansion of one of the generals who was tasked with the persecutions, gifted to the Christian community by one of the general's descendants who became a convert. It is about 500 yards from the epicenter of the bomb, but rebuilt. Not far from there is a hut called Nyokodo where the famous convert Dr. Takashi Nagai, servant of God, spent the remainder of his life after the atomic bomb fell - it became something of a pilgrimage site even during his lifetime; he was considered by many to be a living saint.

Beautiful story, all she needs is one public miracle I think to be beatified! Her story is quite similar to ven. Edel Quinn who, like Satoko, was refused entry to convents due to previous TB. Almighty God's will is always more amazing that ours and, in both these situations, the good that was worked through what seemed to them as a plan b, even from a human perspective, was extraordinary.
