I'm a teacher in Malaysia, and I was thinking of teaching in Japan. However, I realised there is so many factors that won't work : 1) overtime and affected mental health 2) Westerners are more favourable to teach English subjects. 3) Ostracisation from colleagues if you are a foreigner (Gaijin) due to language barrier. 4) Pay 5) Culture of perfectionism. 6) taking sick leave will make you feel guilty and frowned upon colleagues. I'm also not saying Malaysian education is perfect, but we can work harmoniously among different races and there is grace and forgiveness to improve.

Despite their holistic view on being healthy, the Japanese are still yet to accept and figure out the meaning and effects of mental fatigue. When it comes to working, their approach is still very much cemented in the medieval ages where farm work is the norm.

This is a tricky situation. Education is a tough field, but not so tough that it needs foreign workers like healthcare. What the teachers need are better work life balance and more autonomy.

Isn't it the same case for Singaporean teachers? Unless teachers stay at lower grade levels, it is demanding. There's a lot to do after work and weekends.

Those who quit are really smart. No point working for a system that's so rigid. Japanese needs to loosen up a bit. No teaching on Saturday and Sunday that's for sure. And get many Philippines teachers to come in and help. They're good with children and English.

A lot of vital jobs (e.g. teaching, nursing, social work) are very underpaid because you're expected to do so for the 'passion' of the job itself. Which is ridiculous, pay these people better. They give and give of themselves, then burn out of 'passion' and end up leaving.

I think many of the teachers can transition to become tuition teacher. It is not worth to die from overwork and the stress that parents put on teachers can be overwhelming. The Education Ministry should reduce salary gaps to attract more people to join this profession and provide work-life balance. If the ministry did not do anything about it, the system will crumble with more teachers leaving the profession. Forget about pension. Their current system could not even support them to perform their daily job.

I taught in the US last semester and also put in 25-70 hrs overtime/mo depending on the month. I had 123 students.

I teach for like 24 hours a week. Only go to school 3 days a week. Other stuff I need to do, like materials preparation and checking stuff can be done at home. I can't imagine anymore working 5 days a week. As a full time teacher, they only require me 30 hours of actual work.

school is the most inefficient system, even in Switzerland, a lot of hours wasted to teach things using circumlocutions instead of going directly to the point each time. 2 years to teach accounting to students, I taught the same in 2 days for 80 years old students. Hundreds of hours saved.

The problem of teacher shortage exists in most countries. Why would people want to put up with smart arse kids treating them like crap then having the kids parents abuse them when they try and discipline. All that for an average wage.

If JP stop allowing JP companies & SME business owners to expand overseas via acquisition.. I can almost guarantee u suddenly tax surplus will be available then u can start implementing higher wage based on medium CEO salary as upper ceiling..

Recorded lecture can replace the job of teaching Printing graduation certificate can be replaced with RPA such as UiPath. Problem solved

recorded lectures are better for university and college students. it won't work on kids its hard because they need more movement and supervision. it will be similar to watching boring tv programs (if recorded, but Cocomelon might be ok!) Covid -19 lockdown proved it 😅 but I do agree on the certification. just create the same template and change the different names .

I expect recorded classes to be the next step as well, but I don't think having a computer screen for a teacher is going to be great for the children's emotional development.
