Some people use the phrase “in a perfect world...” when describing optimal conditions. I just say “ In Japan...”

This used to be common in America . Self checkout should be an option, not a forced way to purchase . Good service will never be out of style.

That's why such a small country with no natural resources is always in the top 10 global economies and have a GDP of around USD 5 trillion.

Yeah. This is normal here in Japan. I've been here since 1988 now and have become spoiled by the Japanese culture. :) I have a hard time now with other countries lackadaisical work ethics and bad attitudes. Japan is simple splendid. :)

Japanese people work ethic is amazing for the most part. Yes, there is lazy people in there as well. I was there in 2005. Love that country.

It just comes from a completely different culture. I doubt he forced a tip on them but it is true in Japan it's polite to ask before you do something like that whereas in America tipping is usually 90% of a workers income where possible so it's very common and even expected to tip because they don't just include it in the full price of the meal and pay it into the wage. In other places like Japan or the UK the price is the price and a tip is extra so to tip so much for what they are already fairly (or not but a discussion for another time) paid for their work is surprising and can be seen as rude because it's 'flashy' which in some countries where they make 3k a year and you come in tipping 200 bucks it makes sense and that kind of showing off is not liked in those places.
