At Meisei Gakuen School for the Deaf, the only private bilingual deaf education program in Japan, Jeff, and Joel are blown away at the disciplined and deaf-centric environment this school provides for their students. Turn CC (caption) button on and pick either English or Japanese subtitles.

I’m surprised that Jeffrey S. Bravin visit In Japan and to see deaf students at Meisei Garuen school for the deaf. That’s really nice of him to get know the deaf students and their education. They’re so adorable deaf children. I love their smilies 😊

It’s such a heartwarming view to see those kids freely expressed themselves in sign language. I had a deaf daughter, she joined deaf middle school last year and learned FSL. She was from a regular school before and I’m sad that she didn’t fit there. Now, she’s happy and expressive when she knew how to sign. I wished that we enrolled her to a deaf school when she’s little.. Great video. Keep it up! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 From the Philippines😊

I love videos like this! I'm hearing and have no Deaf people in my life, but have recently become interested in Deaf culture, history, and sign languages (and the history of those languages!) Videos like these are so so interesting, I really appreciate insights into Deaf schools because they tell us so much about both Deaf culture but also there is a bittersweetness there about how Deaf people could have been thriving for a very long time with full access to language but instead the majority hearing world decided to discriminate, oppress, and try to force them into a hearing-first culture instead of giving Deaf children access to language from birth. The evidence is so clear that with the right environment every child/person will thrive and it took the hearing world far too long to understand that (not that it even really does today!).

It's very important to having DEAF role models everywhere. Many hearing teachers know sign language and be able to communicate with Deaf children.

How do you get certified to work in this kind of school. I’m interested in learning JSL now. What kind of qualifications do you need to work at a school for hearing impaired students or children with visual impairments? Best wishes.

I loved this video! So happy I stumbled upon it. I’ve been interested in sign language for many years. Taught myself to sign my countries alphabet when I was teenager but never used it. Now 10+ years later I stumbled upon worlds first hearing impaired K-pop group and I’ve started learning KSL, ASL and other sign languages. These videos and the K-pop group really motivate me daily to explore the world from a different perspective 🌊🩵✨

Wow! That school is really amazing and these children are soo cute when they sign with small hands! 🥰 that surprised me so much when you said ASL and JSL are different but they can understand easier because of deaf culture! I'm deaf and I'm from USA 😊👋

Wow, this video is so special to me. I first saw it when I was an exchange student in Japan in 2020; at that time I didn't know anything about Deaf culture. My teacher just used the video as a way to get us thinking about different ways that people communicate, and how the Deaf students don't feel left out because they're with others who are like them, etc. My opinion of the video back then was "hmm interesting, okay next assignment." 😂 Flash forward to 2021, when I started studying ASL- not to be dramatic but my whole life changed. 😂 Now I'm so passionate about sign language and Deaf culture, community, everything. So that's how this video came on my recommendations; as soon as it started I was like "Oh THAT video!!" And now I'm here in my dorm (...at Gallaudet!! which I still can't believe) re-watching this awesome video. 💕 I really hope to get involved with the Deaf community in Japan someday; I've learned a little JSL and hope to learn more. Plus those kids are ADORABLE. 😂🤟 ~:~

Your video is so informative and well edited! I absolutely learned so much from this video. I loved how the kids were copying how you signed your name very quickly :)haha You mentioned at the very end that even though you have different languages you were able to connect because of sharing your Deaf experience or Deaf gain. I am Japanese American and I know that Japanese people can be exclusive to foreigners. I wonder if your shared Deafness overcame that exclusivity I heard so much about within Japan. It looked like you were very much liked and accepted by the teachers and students. Did you feel that way during your trip? Thank you so much for sharing your experience.
