Idk if Finnish people represent western people well. Compared to rest of the western world, we are shy, quiet and reserved. There's a good saying: "If a Finn likes you, they keep looking at _your shoes,_ instead of theirs"
@jenniferhanses4205

That may actually be why they were selected for comparison: They picked a Western culture that shared other cultural similarities in regards to being quiet and reserved. This then controls a bit for "Oh, Americans are just super friendly" or "Italians are just boisterous" so that they can focus on the Western/Eastern divide in regards to eye contact and socialization.

The eye contact thing when being chastised is frustrating. When I got yelled at as a kid, I had to maintain constant eye contact and it couldn't waver because then I'd be accused of rolling my eyes but I also couldn't scowl or flinch(which is really hard when you're struggling not to look away).The constant game of maintaining just enough eye contact with authority figures is stressful. In addition: this won't help hikkikomori (sic). They don't have social anxiety as such, it looks more like a culturally specific sort of post traumatic stress disorder. And that requires a lot of therapy...and when the source of the trauma is Japanese society itself, treatment is more difficult.
@dl5641

Yeah, I can't help but feel like the fact that things like this DVD exist (among many similar products and services in Japan) is a very clear sign that there are some very particular, culturally specific, deep seated issues that the culture unfortunately has no way of addressing in a healthy way typically. If anything, it is built in such a way as to avoid the issues as much as possible and further perpetuate itself in the name of "culture"

Maybe it's not PTSD. Maybe it's just a rational decision to avoid the real world. Maybe it's a problem with society and not the individual. Maybe these people do a cost-benefit analysis and decide it's simply not worth it. Ever think of that? Oh no. There must be something wrong with them that they don't want to put ever increasing effort into ever diminishing returns. Let's get some head shrinkers to tell them that there is something wrong with them. Let's saddle them with guilt and psychotropic drugs until they rejoin the herd. Don't worry. Looking people in the eye isn't a problem when they're not actually present. I can stare at a video of someone looking directly into the camera all day. But when someone is actually _present_ and looking at _me_ it's completely different, because I know they can see me, too. And then I have to talk to them, try to read their body language, their expressions, their reactions, etc. Heck, I feel anxious and shy around other people even when they're not looking at me. Eye contact isn't the issue when it comes to shyness. The problem is interacting in person.

shyness has become one of the main challenges i've seen in people whom i photographed (men are less likely to be shy; in fact, most of people who photobombed my photos are men), which often make them turned down my offer when i want to take their photos - even when they 're visually gorgeous. however, i've also encountered people who finally let me take their photos after i shot a few photos and show the results, which changed their mind and continue. yes, looking at people's eye can be stressful (esp. for autistic people, myself included) and hard, but by making them comfortable and show the good side of them, who knows we may hit a jackpot. and i believe this is not just a japanese problem
@N.I.S.C

It's curious how different cultures think about eye contact. I'm latino and here, if you do not look at people in the eyes when you are speaking to them, some may get angry and assume that you are either hiding something ( "lying") or you are shy enough to be made fun of or taken advantage of. Your familiy will likely tell you down here that "if you don't have enough personality and are scared of people, everyone will just use you, and treat you harshly, because you don't fight back." So looking at people in the eyes is a way to say you are not scared and you are mentally strong, not intimidated by people.

Even here in India we don't usually do eye contact for long when there is an elderly person nearby, especially if they are angry on us. Similarly, when it comes to romance, having a down gaze is often seen as cute and shy, something that is associated with the 'morality' or 'manners' in women.
@bebeiman3731
@bebeiman3731 2 жыл бұрын
When it comes to romance, a down gaze is almost every time seen as weakness for men here in India. Maybe the man has manners and respect for the woman that's why the man refrain from lookin at the woman in bollywood style but society labels that man as weak and unfit for mating. As an introvert indian male myself I can confirm being respectful in India is hard. People might actually have nothing to brag about but are so egotistical here. If you can't keep up with them then you are weak.

Question: in order to be polite, where should one look at a Japanese person? Their nose? Their lips? Their chin? I ask because when I was a kid, I had a condition of near seizure that would cause me to appear as if I was staring. To combat that, I learned that focusing on one's lips helped prevent that from happening, and was wondering if this trick could be applied in Japan too.

@Florida Man Okay Florida man, first alpha/beta talk is just astrology for men based on obsolete wolf studies. Second, eye contact is culturally conditioned. I work for a center that provides services for people with intellectual disabilities and mental health issues, my job is to provide job training for said people, and for me eye contact or lack thereof is often a very important part of ensuring the comfort of the people I work with. Many people who have been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders are uncomfortable with eye contact, some to the point that it can cause extreme anxiety, so being mindful of each persons comfort zone is pretty key for me.

This reminds me so much of Magibon years ago here on KZfaq. She became famous for her 'staring' and 'doing nothing' videos. She actually gained a pretty big fanbase in Japan and was even invited there to model and go on shows. Sadly, she was stalked by weird people because of this and it's pretty apparent that some people do use her staring content for 'other purposes'.

When in Japan I always assumed a lot depends upon the place to look someone directly in the eye. For example when addressing a supervisor the "looking in the eye" may be seen as a power play where you assert dominance towards a boss. While addressing a friend or loved one, then yes, eye to eye. In an attempt to meet someone, cautious eye contact so as to reveal modesty and again not assert dominance and possibly avoid perversion judgments.

To fit everyone's need when it comes to eye contact, they can improve the DVD by inputting Several scenes or make a series like "eye contact for business", for "eye contact for socialization", etc *formal and normal greetings * Formal and normal conversations * Party or events etc "business meetings" Etc. Etc

How to overcome your shyness? by opening your self to tell others about how shy you are... slowly but sure... But opening to other person is naive... Start by opening your self to your self first, by talking with your self with selfie camera or mirror..stare at your own reflection and say "I'm a shy person but also i'm open about it, i want to talk with others about my shyness so people who knows me can understand me better for the sake of better future"

1:00 I expected this to go more like this: - What are these? - You don't know what women's underwear are? - No, because I never wear any. 1:33 Finland is sometimes called the Japan of Europe. One of the reasons being that Finnish people are quite reserved and tolerate silence well in social situations, like the Japanese. So I hope that study took that into account. Choosing Finland to represent a Western country when it comes to social behaviour when making a comparison to Japan might not produce that dramatic of a difference.

I had this phobia when I was a teenager, then somehow that phobia disappeared. Just happened that I stopped thinking about it, so you just let conversation flow naturally and don't think about the persons eyes, you will be looking at them thinking what the person says rather then not listening and feeling anxious.
