A sudden freak storm hit on my first attempt at camping (actually 'glamping') in Japan. I had to survive a sudden storm alone. It really was the wildest glamping night I have had. I thought I was prepared but didn't expect how crazy it would get. Check out the amazing camp site I found in Wakayama. You can check out this awesome campsite here: gajucamp.com/

My favorite off the beaten path place in Japan is Gyokuzoin. It’s between Nara and Osaka. I stayed overnight and had a wing to myself. One of the monks spoke English and drove me up the mountain to the villa so I didn’t have to hike up lol. I experienced a morning fire prayer and traditional prayer ceremony and get a tour of the main building. I ate some of the best vegetarian food ever ( I’m not vegetarian lol). The area around the temple is lovely. I didn’t get a chance to explore everything but I will definitely visit.

I love that you encourage travel off the beaten path in Japan! When I started posting about Japan on my blog and instagram I made it top priority to showcase mostly unknown spots off in the countryside. There are so many beautiful spots that get overlooked completely. In order for Japan to stay a travel destination that everyone can enjoy, it’s so important to spread out tourism and support locals more. Wakayama is one of my favorite spots as well, as is Shikoku. You should definitely visit part of the Shikoku Pilgrimage!

Not really camping per se, but I went with my Japanese family to a place on the Chiba Peninsula near Tateyama about 2 years ago now, it was a combination of either motel type rooms or tents out the back, it also had a small onsen, there were a few large marques where we had Yaki-niku BBQ on 2 Weber Kettles, the next day we visited the Kamogawa Seaworld and watched the Orca Whales do their tricks splashing everyone in the stands......lucky it was in the middle of Summer. We finished off the weekend with a huge Tempura and Sushi restaurant which i believe is pretty famous in the area but i forgot what it was called but there was at least a 50 minute wait to be seated. It was well worth the wait. That was one heck of a storm you had Chani, when it storms in Japan, it doesn't muck around lol.

Thanks for sharing this lovely looking place! My small-town/lesser-known rec that's still easy to get to on public transit is "Masuya guesthouse" in Shimo-suwa + enjoying the scenery on the Azusa train from Tokyo that follows all of the river valleys. The views from the train are so nice on both sides and a highlight of both my trips there. The founder of this hostel used to work at my favourite Tokyo hostel in 2012 before moving back to her hometown and renovating a historical inn there, so I've visited on my past two trips. Shimo-suwa is a small town on a lake. There are lovely local cafes, public baths, and a great art museum, among other things. The inn has a local bar on the main floor in the evenings (the bar is small and cozy and doesn't stay open late; don't worry it's not a noisy party hostel). Very nice relaxing place and the town could definitely use more tourism. I think the train is the Azusa 17 Limited Express Matsumoto (IIRC you have to switch to a local train for the last few stops. From Suwa it's easy to proceed to Nagano city which is much larger than Shimo-suwa but still has far more of a small town feel compared to the big cities and is always one of my favourite stops.

Since high school (a long time ago) I have only ever done 'bush camping' in Australia, so it's interesting to see a glamping site in Japan. I think the storm added to the experience and you seemed to take it in your stride. Thinking about it, you could probably make a one hour video of the rain and wind pummelling the tent, since a lot of people find such videos very relaxing as a form of ASMR. Could be a nice little money-spinner once monetised. 😊

I love Wakayama, I was born in Japan but grew up in the UK. I’ve been to mount Koya twice as it’s a special place for shingon Buddhists like my family. I went again this year. I enjoy watching your videos and getting a taste of what it’s like to really live there. Maybe one day I can go back and live there. Have you been to Ibaraki prefecture? Maybe try there and mount Tsukuba. It’s not touristy. 😊.

Hearing 2 seconds of the 6pm chimes at 2.20 was enough to send me into a Proustian reverie.

Yes the chime goes off at 5pm even at the camp site 😂

I love this!!! I always wish I could visit the countryside in Japan. Just wish it is in my family's budget to travel. By any chance, do you follow Craig Mod's pop-up e-newletters of his walking adventures in Japan? I love the format, but he is not a video kind of person. Anyway, can't wait for your next video. I hope your home is okay and that there isn't too much damage to your backyard set-up. You worked so hard on that! ❤

I'm glad that you survived the storm, and it looks like an otherwise lovely camping space in Japan. Thank you for sharing. Hope your kitty got on alright.

What a great place to stay! Totally agree with your comments about getting off the beaten track in Japan to lesser known destinations. There are so many wonderful things to see and do there without the crowds.

That tent could probably hold it's own as a summer house Too bad the weather wasn't cooperating but I'd probably enjoy that contrast of the storm and the ultra-cozy tent sweetness 😁 The chicken seemed surprisingly relaxed and curious...just like the manager, hehe. It's good he didn't have a pet snake... I agree it's not great that the tourism influx is hyper concentrated! Spread the word!
