In October 2023, a trip to Tsushima, Nagasaki Prefecture, known as an island on the border with South Korea, will be published in three instalments.
The first installment focuses on the ruins of the Himegamiyama Battery, known as the 'Fortress in the Sky', and takes a look at Akashima, an island belonging to Tsushima Island and characterised by its beautiful blue sea.
Tsushima is located between Kyushu and the Korean Peninsula and belongs to Nagasaki Prefecture. It is the third largest island in Japan after Sado Island and Amami Oshima and is home to approximately 30,000 people, but approximately 90% of its deeply forested and rugged land is mountainous. It is also a place where valuable continental flora and fauna, such as the Tsushima leopard cat, Akimado fireflies and Tanna chosen yamatsutji, are distributed. The island has deep historical links with the Korean Peninsula and is visited by many Korean tourists.
Although it belongs to Nagasaki Prefecture, in terms of transportation it has close links with Fukuoka, and on this trip we took an overnight boat from the Hakata Port Ferry Terminal to land on Tsushima. From mainland Kyushu, Tsushima can also be accessed by air.
■About the Himegamiyama Battery Ruins
The Himegamiyama Battery Ruins are located in Mine-cho, Tsushima City, on the summit of Mount Himegamiyama, 257 m above sea level. This turret was built during World War II and the remains of the former fortress remain. It is also known as the 'Fortress in the Sky' for its beautiful scenery and historical value.

The road to the ruins of the Himegamiyama Battery is not paved and is very narrow and steep. It is strongly recommended to park at the foot of the mountain and walk to the site.
