Shirakawa-go is a World Heritage Site that features a quaint village with gassho-style houses. These houses demonstrate climate-responsive engineering and design, with this part of Gifu Prefecture in Central Japan experiencing deep snow during high winter. Apart from these houses, the village is lovely overall! We also take a tour of the Kanda House, one of the three gassho-zukuris that functions as a museum. If you go outside the village and just across the bridge, you will find the Shirakawago Open Air Museum which features other houses that have been relocated to the site.
We went on a drizzly day, but it didn't spoil that much our daytrip! We found comfort in a nice cafe right in the heart of the village offering delicious red bean soup, among others.
