Public baths have been the center of city life in Japan for centuries. But since 2006, hundreds of such baths have closed. Some are working to preserve the ancient tradition, which they say allows for socializing and relaxation.
"CBS Saturday Morning" co-hosts Jeff Glor, Michelle Miller and Dana Jacobson deliver two hours of original reporting and breaking news, as well as profiles of leading figures in culture and the arts. Watch "CBS Saturday Morning" at 7 a.m. ET on CBS and 8 a.m. ET on the CBS News app.

The history of the Japanese bath house is very interesting. I hope it brings down the loneliness in japan theyve had.

That's a cool concept. Not sure I would feel comfortable naked in front of strangers but cool.

The Turkish has this also since the ottoman time, most are bigger with marble 'table'. I tried it at a resort town on the Turkish Rivera. They can bath themselves or pay for a package, which tourist like. The spa package includes an attendant scrubbing the client head to toe, scrap your dead skin cells off 😅 massage, shampoo 🧴 etc. It cost me 35 euros for the 45 minutes service. They also serve 🍵 tea I was 🤭 giggling during the massage 🤭 Many tourist try to have this experience. Men and women's are separated, some on different days. Most of the traditional HAMAN bath house are next to the bakery because the same wood chips to heat up the hot water are link to the bakery. Their bakery bake flat pita 🫓 and also people will bring their special clay pot stew to the bakery to bake . Gordon Ramsay and Jamie Oliver did an episode on this. This type of bath house are also available in Morocco. I think this concept + gym, can be incorporated into affordable public housing. As in this report indicates, rich or poor can enjoy the facility.

Like anything if you grow up with it, it's no big deal.

I visited Japan twice, did a bathhouse once. It really isn’t a big deal to get naked in front of others. Our western ideology is narrowing our perspective on some very basic cultural norms. As Morty would say, open your mind!

This will be seen as the saviour of Japanesse society. As other cultures deal with unsocial folks hiding behind computers and apps this brings people together the way it should be.

Definitely not for me. But I'm glad people care about holding onto and saving traditions; it's important.

I think it’s kind of nice. I go to Korean spas and everyone there gets naked and enjoys the spa. Of course women and men are separated into their own facilities but they also have communal spaces with uniforms to wear in those areas. But I think it has made me more comfortable with my body for sure. When all you see are perfect bodies on your screens and in adverts, it’s nice to see that we are all just normal and nothing is wrong.

What they are not telling you is that most bath houses will Not allow people with tattoos into the bathhouse. You have to find a specific bathhouse that allows tattoos. I lived in Japan and experienced this first hand. Nonetheless, a fascinating beautiful culture. 😔

They have a reason tho; tattoos can be gang signs so to avoid that completely (even if the tattoo is not gang-affiliated) no tattoos allowed in some bath houses

@@BDBbaritone You’re right! I was informed about the “gang culture” (we won’t mention specific names) in Japan and the role that they play in the society. I don’t have that many tats, but I do have a sleeve. But I actually found a bathhouse that would accommodate people, especially foreigners, with tats! Those who have never experienced (lived) in Japan culture are truly missing out! Thanks for the reply!✌🏿

Dude - you literally scrub and wash yourself before getting into the soaking hot water. And, yes. people aren't just skipping it and jumping into the water. There is a greater sense of responsibility in Japan. Look at the streets. There is no litter.

Tell me you know nothing about Japan without saying you know nothing about Japan. Japan is 2.5% foreigners and expected to grow to over 10%. Roughly 0.2% of the population is "illegal" or about 250K.
