Japanese curry is a marvelous thing. It's easy to make, requiring very little work It can be made in bulk (good for big families) it can be made with just about any combination of ingredients and it is rather cheap. get a rice cooker to make a pot of rice, and you have dinner for the family. Cheap (compared to most other things), easy, filling, delicious.

@@Chiburrotube I would guess they mean leaving it in the fridge for a while. Leaving it out would probably let the flavours blend a bit faster, but that'd also lead to random food poisoning incidents (unless there's something in the blocks of curry that is such a powerful preservative that the meat stays edible long term, which is possible I suppose). As hellothisiskyle said, this isn't exclusive to Japanese food, more an inherent quality of soups and stews and a few other things - basically anything where the flavours get a chance to mix together over time.

Chef tip: to level up the curry just a little, sauté your carrots with an onion and a little celery, it will add some depth. Also add a tomato before adding water, it will add a layer of richness and sweetness to the ‘stock’ Also tomato and celery both contain naturally occurring MSG so they both add a lotttttt of flavour! Also also cutting up the curry cubes into little pieces really does help it dissolve so well! And Japanese curry cubes are fairly mild so they’re good for anyone who can’t handle spice. Also Japanese curry base and basic recipe is realllllly perfect for curried sausages!

@@rtempest12 I’m not 100% sure where you would find them in Canada … because I’m Australian 😅 but I would guess Asian supermarkets? Probably like a general Asian supermarket, or a Japanese supermarket if you can find one? Some normal supermarkets also sell them in their ‘international’ section but I guess that depends on your location? If not you might be able to find them online? The two main brands are ‘S&B Golden Curry’ and ‘Vermont Curry’ they’re both really good. And yes you can definitely add an apple, that’s going to give you a lot of added sweetness! Hope this helps!

Bomb recipe with Japanese curry: -Fresh ginger, before anything else. Let it get nuce and heated and fragrant -Japanese curry (duh) -Carrots -Potatoes -Onions, sauteéd (pretty standard so far) -Apples, somthing with a good sour/sweet ratio. Honey crisp is amzing, but if dont like sweet as much, Granny Smith is great too 💙 -Sour cream/full fat greek yogurt, about ¼ cup -Instant coffee, about 2 teaspoon -Dark chocolate, 70% or more is best. I use 86%. Use to taste, i like to use about ¼ of a bar or so. Whatever meat you prefer. I usually use Chicken Theighs but if i have shrimp around ill use that. Venison is great in it too.

One way to up your Japanese curry game: use two different brands of curry. Each brand kinda differs from one another (one being sweeter, or stronger curry flavor, more apple forward, more umami forward, etc). You can also grate an apple or add honey or add things like apple butter if you want a more complex sweetness. Also deglaze with red wine or beef stock or both or add instant espresso or a few pieces of 80% dark chocolate for a much richer flavor. Its crazy how well they go together.

I LOVE Japanese curry! I have IBD and IBS and can't have anything spicy. (I got hospitalized multiple times by "not spicy" dishes) Japanese curry is perfect! It's not spicy at all and I just throw in veggies that don't upset my stomach 😊 I usually use root veggies (potatoes, carrots, burdock, turnip etc) and some greens like kale, broccoli or peas. I recently discovered a type of mushroom that doesn't upset my stomach (oyster mushrooms!), so I'll be trying using those in the near future! I usually use diced chicken breast instead of ground beef. And look you said, I eat it with rice until I finish the pot! And if I'm unable to do so, I freeze the curry in portions. Then I whip up some rice and heat up the defrosted curry on the stove. It's a wonderful easy meal!

Here in Brazil we have something called soup of beans and it is the best soup there is. My parents have a very special way of doing it, where you cook the beans in the pressure cooker, put them in a blender to make a broth and put them back in the pressure cooker with the meat and vegetables of your choice. We like to add potatoes, carrots and kabocha squash, and that's when you add seasonings like spicy paprika, curry, lemon pepper and black pepper. It is the recipe we make the most in the winter and it has a well-seasoned and delicious flavor, very good to warm up.

The brand of curry roux you use also changes how easy it is to make! I find the brand you used (Vermont Curry) is 1) the sweetest (that's why it's my favourite ahahah) and 2) the easiest to dissolve into hot water. Golden Curry is also a popular brand, but you're better off chopping the roux into smaller cubes or even grating it before you try to mix it in.

My husband, from Kentucky, showed me how to make it. His first ever girlfriend showed him because she was Japanese! His 1st love and I'm grateful. ❤ He died but he's forever alive in my heart, but not only for all we lived together. All the things we loved to cook together we're wonderful! Including the things she taught him about her culture, some I already knew because I was born and raised in San Francisco. Neat hint for this curry though, is to add a sour apple, like a Granny Smith, in chunks, when you add the carrots and potatoes. The tang it adds is so nice as a contrast to the richness and sweetness of the curry! ❤

If you wanna make it from scratch it's a bit harder but I'll give you a recipe. Fry a couple onions once soft and browned make a roux with a fat and flour about 75g of flour to 100g of butter, toast the roux, add 4 tbsp of curry powder 1 tbsp garam masala, add some tomato paste cook it down a bit, now add stock until it's your desired thickness, add some honey to taste, a couple nice pinches of msg and a couple tablespoons of soy sauce.

For veggies, I really like adding broccoli and I'll even add in some diced apple. I also add a touch of cocoa powder for a little more depth and shichimi togarashi for a little spice!
