That L-1 is the gold standard of snap off knives. I had been scouring the earth for the best utility knife. All day at work, I cut open and break down boxes, literal hundreds of boxes a day, non-stop. I bought all different kinds of knives from different websites and some of them worked ok but none really "ticked all the boxes". Then I found an old beat up L-1 lying around the my workplace and ended up using it the next day. I completely fell in love. It is what I never knew I wanted until I was forced to use it. I feel soo ridiculous for buying all those other expensive obscure knives. This thing (L-1) is the perfect synthesis of materials and execution. I actually don't buy new blades. I use a Lansky TurnBox and resharpen the same blade every day. The super thin snapoff blades are super easy to resharpen. I takes 2 minutes.

The German made knife you rehandled, isn't just a heirloom knife ,it's one of the best knifemakers in the world. Actually, they make the best Chef's knives to this day!!! The handle came out awesome!!! The brass liners look great, the wood fit the vintage blade perfect too!!! It will serve your kids and their kids too, I'm sure for that!!!

Yes Olfa was the original. Been using Olfa for decades with good performance. Customer service went the distance for me too. No reason to go with a copycat. Keep them clean and lightly oiled they'll work like new for decades.

NT cutters are great. Very well made. I'd buy whoever had a better price. This is not the same situation as cheap knock-off products on Amazon.

Knipex’s pliers wrenches and water pump pliers are some of my most beloved and most used tools! 🇩🇪 Also, even though they are not manufactured in Deutschland, Wera’s Hex-Plus hex keys are my most used hex wrenches!

I had the Olfa craft knife to use for cutting bait fish when seawater fishing. Make sure you get the stainless steel replacement blades when buying.

Actually Carbon steel (the ones that rust) are totally superior in terms of edge retention and strength. If you won't be using them in area with water I would always steer you towards Carbon steel.

I think it will be cheaper if you use grit 1000 dry/wet sandpaper stick it on something flat that you can carry around and use it as portable sharpener and always rinse the knife with tap water everytime you use it in corrosive environment. But for me OLFA L5 AL with a stainless steel blade would be much more practical to use as a fishing knife.

I only recently found out how good Olfa knives are. I've seen them for years, but I only found out about their history in the last month. I used to think they were just like any other snap-off utility knife on the market. I had no clue they invented the snap-off blade design way back in 1956. Ever since then I've been buying a lot of their models, just to have a nice little collection of them, all starting with the L-1.

Based on my experience with NT Cutter L-500RP and L-500GP when compared to OLFA it seems that NT Cutter have more blades movement especially when the blade fully extended like when i use serated or saw blades.

Maybe NT Cutters are made with larger tolerances. Olfa seems to be very precise with their manufacturing.
