These are so great for wet places. They soak up the water. They do like richer soil in my experience. This is the most underrated garden shrub/tree. They are GORGEOUS.

When I sw my Dappled Willows for the first time...I feel in love!!! I have a colonial home and I placed them between the windows 4' to 5' away from front of home. They are a dream! My husband and I are retired and wow landscaping is hard work...from weeding to putting topsoil and weed barriers! Yikes Lol When I planted my willows and some new plant just to start out, as well as, landscaped edging with rocks and bolders my property...my neighbors came out and loved the look and my dappled willow!!! I did not know my neighbor used to be a landscaper and he was impressed with my design. Well I could just keep talking about how they take my breath away. Best decision I have made in my garden so far❤❤❤🍁🍂🌻

Thank you Lina. Your garden is beautiful 🪴 My neighbor put this shrub to the curb for garbage and I rescued it 🥰 I love seeing yours after 3 seasons. 💚

Thank you ☺️ Rescued plants are the most rewarding! Although I can’t imagine why anyone would throw this shrub out in the first place.. they are so pretty! And quite easy to keep in check in my opinion. I hope you get much joy from it. Thank you for your comment 💚

I just bought one to use as a center piece in front of the middle section of a three-section privacy fence and I was worried about how far away from the fence I’d have to plant it. Three feet should work well for my space. Your video was exactly the frame of reference I needed! Thank you so much!!

I’m glad to hear that my video helped 😊 After a few years, they may grow a bit wider than 3 feet on each side but these shrubs are pretty easy to shear/prune to maintain shape and size. Happy gardening! 🌿🌸🌿

Thank you 😊 If you can’t find one for sale, you can also propagate by cutting. It’s quite easy. I have two new dappled willows this year from the cuttings I took last year 🌿🪴👍

the local garden center had a tree about 4 feet tall for $172 i was going to buy it but when i went back it was sold. 😢 But then went to the Farm supply store and they had a small shrub with a nice clean trunk for $25 so I bought it and will guide it to grow to a tree!! Yay!!

Pruning a shrub into a tree sounds so exciting! The knowledge of botany combined with the understanding of aesthetics… that’s science and art rolled into one. I hope to someday learn how to do that, too 😊

I planted two of the shrub form this passing summer. Please do a video on how you trim them back. I noticed they grow very quickly. My soil is mostly dry & they are still thriving.
@Linasgardens
@Linasgardens 2 жыл бұрын
Hi there. Yes they do grow at a fast rate. How big are yours now? Mine took about 3 years to grow to this size. They have now reached maturity and desired heights so this late winter, I’ll have to start pruning back to maintain size. So far I’ve only done very light pruning, like removing dead stems or branches that hang too low. If you go to Garden Sanity channel and watch her video on “The Truth About Dappled Willow”, you’ll see what dappled willows look like if left unattended for many years. Her videos made me realize that dappled willows must be pruned for best shape and that tri-color effect that we all love. But yes, I plan to do another video on how and when to trim these branches. Thanks for the comment :)

@@Linasgardens yes I saw that channel lol. It is advised to coppice yearly For size control. My willows spread 3-4 ft wide so far. I’m going to prune them hard coming spring & fertilize to see what they do. I’m sure it’s not going to hurt them in any way. I’m in zone 7b & they seem to do fine. I’m going to try & propagate them also.

That’s a lovely willow! Would you happen to know how wide and tall these grow to, and is your plan to trim them regularly? Many thanks!

Thank you! I prune every year in spring and again in summer to maintain size. These guys grow fast and large. I’ve had branches grow taller than 6’ and if left unpruned, they’d probably reach 8-10’ easy. For the spot they’re in, I wanna keep them at 6’ tall and about 4-5’ wide and that means pruning regularly. Thanks for visiting and leaving a comment :)

@@Linasgardens It’s great that you are controlling the growth. I live in England and our neighbour had a beautiful English weeping willow in his front garden but it got too big, blocked out the light and so he had to chop it down sadly. Here willow is used to make cricket bats and there have been experiments to use them as biofuel. I guess your neighbour will also benefit from the trees as they can view the foliage from their garden 😍 Take care!

Question. You have 4. Are they all the same because 2 look like trees while 2 look like shrubs. I bought 2 today and they look more like shrubs than trees. They don't just have one trunk. I really wanted the tree formed ones instead. Can I grow the shrubs to look like trees??
@Linasgardens
@Linasgardens 3 ай бұрын
Hi! Thank you for your question. The two behind me in the very beginning of the video are trees and the shorter ones you see on the other side of the fence are shrubs. I think it’s possible to train it into a tree although I imagine it would take a lot of skills! (Which I don’t have) It’s probably easier to just buy one in a tree form. They do come by every so often! I got one of mine from Lowe’s actually, and the other from a local nursery if memory serves.

Hello my tree was in a pot and didn’t do well also the stems were black so dead comes to mind So I planted it in the ground and cut all the stems of so hardly not much on it so I’m just going to see how it gets on… any recommends please ?
@Linasgardens
@Linasgardens 2 жыл бұрын
I’m sorry to hear your tree wasn’t doing well but there’s a high chance it’ll bounce back. Willows are super resilient. It’s natural to have some dead or damaged stems from the previous season. I cut those off in early spring. Willows like water especially during their first few seasons until they get established. It’s better to water deeply but less frequent (once or twice a week is enough depending on how hot it gets) That’s what I’ve done with mine so far. I hope your tree is doing better. Good luck!

in the first minute of the video, you zoom in on the first tree, and it looked like the leaves have rust. What have you done for this problem that is apparently common with the willow?
@Linasgardens
@Linasgardens 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah that usually happens as the pink/salmon hues of the leaves fade in the summer. I’m not sure what caused it whether it’s heat or insufficient watering. I’ll see if it does the same thing this summer.

Hi. My dappled willow looks yellowish and not lush and full. I planted it last fall. In the springtime it was beautiful, now it's summer and it has brown tips, yellow leaves. Any suggestions?
@Linasgardens
@Linasgardens 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, how is your soil? Is it waterlogged? They like well-draining soil. It can also be that it doesn’t get enough water. I usually water mine once a week in the summer and each time I water deeply. But usually leaves’ tips turning brown in the summer is pretty normal as long as the plant isn’t dying. Mine do that a bit too. If your tree is young, it’ll take at least 2 seasons for it to look lush and full. Good luck!

Hi there. Thank you 😊 I haven’t seen the tree form anywhere in big box stores but that’s not to say that they’ll never have them. I got mine at a local private nursery that is now closed down because the owner wanted to retire 😔 I’m sorry I don’t know where else to get these other than online right now. And we know what it’s like to order plants online… it’s hit or miss. I hope you find a reputable company if you decide to go with the online option. But also check with your local nurseries. Good luck 👍
