When I showed this video to my Japanese father-in-law (mid 70s) his face lit up as he began telling me how as a boy he and his friends would stage exciting fighting top competitions on the street in front of their home (rural farming community without much car traffic). Fighting tops are a special variety of spinning top (tops in general are called koma) made of solid metal or wood with a steel ring around the outer edge. The tops are "thrown" after a long string is wound around the body; and some skill is necessary to give a top a proper spin and to cause it to land within range of an opponent's top. Once engaged, a pair of fighting tops will crash and bang into one another until a victor is declared when either one top stops moving or has been pushed outside the designated game area. This video was filmed outside an old fashioned candy store near my home in Shizuoka Japan. (KB)
A tip from grandpa Suzuki:
My wife's father points out that a kenkagoma's steel ring may sometimes come loose from the wooden body. He notes that when he was a boy and this happened he and his friends would place the top in water for a short while in order to cause the wooden body to swell and thus reseat the ring. directorzone.cy...
🚶‍♂️Step into the world of traditional Japanese games with "Japanese Fighting Spinning Top: Kenkagoma Koma," an episode of Softypapa Adventures that delves into the exciting realm of kenkagoma. These special spinning tops, known for their thrilling competitions, evoke a sense of nostalgia and joy, especially among those who remember them from childhood.
Join Kurt Bell as he uncovers the history and charm of kenkagoma through a personal story shared by his Japanese father-in-law. As a boy in a rural farming community, where the quiet streets rarely saw car traffic, he and his friends would engage in spirited battles of kenkagoma, turning simple play into moments of intense competition and camaraderie.
Discover the craftsmanship behind these fighting tops, traditionally made from solid metal or wood with a steel ring around the outer edge, designed to withstand the impact of clashing with an opponent. The skill involved in winding the long string around the top's body, throwing it with precision, and mastering the strategy to outmaneuver opponents highlights the depth of this seemingly simple game.
Filmed near an old-fashioned candy store in Shizuoka, Japan, this video captures not only the action and excitement of kenkagoma battles but also paints a picture of the community and cultural significance surrounding traditional Japanese games.
"Japanese Fighting Spinning Top: Kenkagoma Koma" invites viewers to explore the timeless appeal of kenkagoma, reflecting on how traditional games can foster connections across generations, encourage skill development, and offer pure, unadulterated fun. 🎌🔴🚶‍♂️

Around new years day like from a month before to a month after, we played spinning top for hours everyday. There seems to be many different types of tops and how they play depends on the region. Ours were made of all wood and played on the flat ground. I think the name Beyblades came from "Beigoma" similar to the game played in the video.

My uncle used to have those when he was a kid.but they were made entirely out of wood so you could add nails, razor blades, anything really to them so they battle better. My mum usd marshmallows, needless to say that did not hold up well against nail He told me that there was this kid that was so good at his that he would be able to make it spin on water for a couple seconds, then it would sink. Well, not really sink more like dig a hole n the water, but it would eventually float to the top again

Actualy the original of Beybltades are also popular in Japan (tho originaly chinese) beigoma tops. Originaly made from seashell filled with sand and sealed with wax, later evolved into cast-iron ones. There's still one factory in Japan producing custom-made Beigoma with your symbol (initials, some japanese symbol etc.). ...but hec, i think that the idea of "whose top is spinning longer" is pretty universal, and probably researching it would give more "OMG TOTALY BEYBLADE ANCESTOR" ideas... With my brother we played with gears from old clocks like that long before Beyblade was a thing, for example...

beyblade was actually inspired by a traditional top called beigoma heres how to play and intrusctions: A small but light pointy shaped toy of approximately 3 cm in diameter, it is spun by wrapping a thin 60 cm cord around it, then throwing it while releasing the cord to spin it onto a surface such as matting spread across the top of a barrel. The thrower aims it at another beigoma that is already spinning to knock it out of the playing area. The loser is the player whose top either stops spinning first or is knocked outside the area. If spun correctly it makes a humming sound.

Also I do have a lot of the original tops that are like yours a just think they fail in comperison to the modern version because they are large and take a lot of effort to just get them in plus there are are multiple versions so that would be hard to cary around unless you have a carrying case or bag yes I know beys have a carrying case too but they are smaller plus the pack a punch compared to yours or mine because the metal part is smooth on most of them but that's not the same story for beys
