I've seen something closer to this with shirts. I follow some japanese insect breeders on social media and once one of them was selling beetle-themed shirts, with drawings and cool phrases. The dude with the full back tattoo that says, "Gout," is priceless. The only thing that could make this video better is to know what the recipient of each tattoo thought they were getting. "Tap (water)" was probably sold as, "strength," or some such rot. Love this.
@hagen-p3 жыл бұрын
The individual kanji of (water) 'tap' are 水 (sui, meaning 'water') and 道 (dou, meaning 'road-way, street, district, journey, course, moral, teachings'). In Japanese culture, there are several "ways" and words that end with this 'dou', e.g. 話道 (ka-dou or ikebana, the way of the flower), 書道 (sho-dou, the way of writing, i.e. Japanese Calligraphy). Ju-do and Taekwon-do (or other martial arts) also often have the "way" as part of their meaning. Maybe she wanted 'the (spiritual) way of the water', i.e. for a person that wants to be "as calm but strong as water" as a tattoo? Nice thinking! Unfortunately for her, the combination has already a fixed meaning - 'tap'. Edit: clarify/shorten

When I lived in Japan, my favorite phrase quickly became "Ganbare!" (頑張れ). Whether I was in class teaching English or at the university studying Japanese or at the Bujinkan training, I just felt like it in many ways defined my daily experience there. I sometimes see it translated as "good luck!", but I always felt like it meant something more like, "Never give up! Always persevere!" It was never about luck. Ganbaru is hard work, commitment. Integrity. Accountability. In order to ganbaru, you often have to gaman shimasu. I'm not a huge fan of tattoos, but if I were to ever get a Japanese kanji tattoo, it would have to include that phrase.

You can almost forgive folks for getting the wrong tattoo when it's in a different language. They can at least say, "I didn't know". The really sad ones are when they get a screwed up tattoo in their mother tongue. One of the classic examples is someone who meant to have their tattoo say, "No Regrets", but the tattoo artist gave them a "No Regerts" tattoo. Of course an easy fix would be to add an asterisk after it and in smaller lettering add, "Well, maybe one"

Strictly speaking, I believe you can be a 外人 (gaijin/foreign person) and still be Japanese. E.g. Japan born and raised but obviously of European descent or smth There’s another word 外国人 (gaikokujin/foreign country person) which means someone who is actually FROM a foreign country. I believe a Japanese person can be born abroad, such as born and raised in Australia, and despite being Japanese by heritage they are 外国人 because they are from outside the country (literally means outside country person, as in a person from outside the country) I could possibly be mistaken about some things. As a Japanese, what I always wanna say is this. Any choice of Kanji characters you wanna tattooed is freedom. It's all up to your sense and humor. Any absurd meaning of tattoos is totally fine. But please, please order your tattoos to the proper tattoo artist who can draw and design stylish Kanji writing by oneself or at least who enable to choose cool Japanese Kanji fonts. Not a person who prints out random cheap Japanese Kanji fonts on PC and just traces them on your skin. Such kind of tattoos makes you look like a weird and creepy labeled product which walking around.
