Japanese Maple Shaping Decisions Part 1

How do you decide on the shape of a Maple Bonsai? In this video I show you the process of deciding the shape of the tree. I use many examples as the more options I show you the more confident you will become when making that choice yourself.
Every tree has a different styling option. It is important to decide what works, whether a broom style tree or a twin trunk or any other shape and style Bonsai. Bear in mind that usually the base of the tree will determine to a large extent what the front of the Bonsai will be.
Top Tip: When you cut the trunk leave about an inch or so as a stub and don’t cut flush to the trunk as it will die back to the next point. Once cut you can use a wound sealant.
Don’t forget making bonsai takes patience.

Same! I came trying to find out how to train some a.j. coral bark we let grow from seedlings in our garden (from the full-grown mama) and I didn't know what to do to rein in but also kind of honor the crazy growth patterns they'd gotten themselves into. Thank you!

Thank you so much for this video. You've just saved the little mapel I bought. As a complete novice I was going to start chopping branches and cutting roots to fit it into a bonsai pot. I've now put it into a bigger pot to let it get strong and hopefully a nice thick trunk. Looking forward to watching your other videos.

I loved that last multi trunk. I think I'm being drawn back into working on my trees. I've had my tools and books packed away in boxes about 3 years now. I planted my trees and what survived are looking good. Even wired a Japanese black pine for movement. Ya, I think it's in my blood. Thank you

I just did my first Acer "Kiyohime" it was $45 so a little scary but I did remove a lot of stuff, it was just a bush, had many broken branches, looks beautiful now as an informal upright. I may buy one of the expensive 6' tall trees and air layer it to get a thicker trunk, it would be nice to hear how old each tree might be when you are talking about them, gives an idea how many years of training it has had. Great video as they all are.

This is very interesting, can you start telling us how old each tree is in the future? One of my guys is about the same trunk size and it’s about 9 years old, they grow very very slow but I like that about them. Thank you so much Sir. Thanks for this video. I got a maple seedling from my neighbors about 35 cm height. It has a bare trunk for the bottom 30 cm. I am not sure what to do ... I think that it is too tall so I might just have to chop it shorter and see if some side branches will grow. So easy to watch you doing all the cuttings ... :)

Wow, wee, this is a fantastic tutorial, so informative. I absolutely love my Japanese Maples but am often scared to make cuts in fear of them dying or something. Would love to know if there are specific Maples or Acers that suit being a bonsai better than others? Are there some that you could not do this too at all? my goodness I just stumbled on to this site.. FANTASTIC! I have always been interested in bonsai trees but was always busy with life.. But the kids are grow now the working is over and I have all the time in the world until I end.. you set the spark back a light in me my friend.. and I have a japanese maple in my front yard!... one question though.. don't the trees freeze in the pots over the winter? We do not have a bad winter here in vancouver washington very often.. But once and awhile it can be.. I guess my wife gets her green house this year!

When I prune a branch of maple palmatum, remove much wise and dry more than 10 cm on the pruned branch, I want to ask if you can answer me. What would be the time of year to cut branches without the plant removing so wise in the cut? Thank you

I’ve been trying to be a bonsai grower for years now and I sometimes get good and sometimes I don’t...I just love bonsais and I have seven that I’ve dug up in the forest.. I have a couple still in the forest that I’ve been training now for 8 years and I’ll dig them up this fall and bring them home,,,
