Japanese Maple Shopping during the Pandemic - Finally getting my Shin Deshojo

I've been wanting a Shin Deshojo Maple for over a year now. I hate buying maples online, always sold out and you can't pick you tree. In video I brave the outside world to go buy a Shin Deshojo Maple at a local nursery.
I also end up with an ikandi and strawberry spring Japanese maple. whoops.
Thanks for watching my channel. I started my gardening channel based on my collection figs, at one point I had over 350 varieties in Seattle. Now I've expanded my channel to Bonsais and Kois as well.

Great video - here in South Africa we have a very limited selection and 2/3 year old trees with tiny trunks and 24 inches high - if one can find them are around USD$40 in a bag - no pot. So at 72 my new hobby in this fascination is rooting planting and growing Japanese maples- so far have 120 rooted from about 1000 cuttings from motherstock we planted 12 years ago- at the time we had no idea of what we were planting but so grateful now🙏

You can find so many different varieties of maples for reasonable prices on the West Coast. I wish we had the same here on the East. Love the vids. Keep them coming.

Your lucky to have a garden centre near you that sell shin deshojo.here in England there are no garden centres that stock this plant.

Wow. Amazing! I'm in the UK and been looking for a deshojo for a long time. I've only come across them online and i really would love to visit a nursery and buy one like you did. So if anyone from the UK reads this, i would love to hear from them if they can give advice. Also, are most deshojos grafted? Is it better to buy a grafted deshojo or not?

i went to a local nursery this wweek too (in kirkland). i didnt see any shin deshoujos.... i wonder if my gf will let me get another tree (we rent and my garden is on our balcony). its super pretty so she might lol

Man I would be soooo broke if I lived in zone 5 haha. I’m still spending lots on potted Japanese maples but my yard would be absolutely filled with these if I wasn’t in zone 4b

What is the differece between Shin Deshojo and a "normal" Deshojo? :)

Shindeshojo means new Deshojo. It is an improved version in overall color, how long it holds its color and is more of a dwarf form Maple than the old Deshojo Maple is. Yes, there is more fungal disease resistance in Shindeshojo than Deshojo from Japan.

@@BenBSeattle Hm... not sure how many different types there are. I planted one for a landscaping client. I'm interested to see how it develops. Definitely needs some regular pruning to make it look like something. I've seen some images of some full sized ones that look silly. It's not a selection that takes on an elegant look on its own, because it's basically a tube of maple leaves. But I imagine the density of branching might make for some interesting bonsai.

@@BenBSeattle I'm in 8b, but San Diego area, no where near same water or humidity. I have very different issues for summer die back, but don't worry about freeze either. So many factors than just zone. Right?

People are laughing at you online when you ask for a seed grown Shin deshojo for a reason. Any cultivar isn't grown from seed but by grafts. Technically the original one may have been grown by seed but any of its offspring must be grafted to have the exact same traits.
