I had similar reactions to sharing some Russian foods with my Asian (Chinese, Laotian, Thai) roommates when I first moved out on my own. They did not like the heaviness of the foods, the pungency of borsch, acidity of cabbage, and the abundant malt flavors in the bread and kvas. Asian cuisines tend to be rather light and mellow in tastes, and are very low in foods like breads and roots and so on. The Chinese guys did like vodka, because it was like their native baiju. They eventually learned to be okay with cabbage soup, provided I made it less strongly flavored (I also took to putting bamboo shoots and bean sprouts in it). Nobody ever came around to kvas, ogurtsy, hleb, chebureki, spraty, or borsch. Kompot was an instant hit, as were pelmeni and blinchiki. The heavier the food and overbearing its flavor, the less the Asians seemed to like it. Their foods are full of complex but light flavors. They don't have anything like borsch, where the whole thing is beet flavor surrounded by beets and a side of beets.

japanese people are educated in primary that wasting food is a disgrace. Everyone were fed the same meals every day and cannot get off their seat if they don't finish it. So it doesn't matter how much you hate a food you'd have to eat it (except if you're allergic).

+TerminalHamster - I tried marmite and vegemite in the "correct way". Toasted bread, butter, and a finger dab of the brown. It still wasn't good. It's like a salty ass, bitter soy sauce. It tastes weird with bread and butter. I think it'll be better if you use it in cooking to add "umami", but on toast... hell no.

Rachel & Jun Never tried Marmite, its texture is very different to Vegemite. I have given vegemite to some Japanese and the reactions were not as bad as the marmite. Of course you don't spread it on that thick for first timers, that's the key. I never ate vegemite as a kid, but one day I woke up wanting to eat it, now I like it. It's an acquired taste.
