Featured in the famous "Kill Bill Vol. 1" fight scene - the Shishi Odoshi or "Deer Scarer" Bamboo Water Fountain would make a fantastic water feature for one's Backyard or "Zen Garden". This one was filmed at the Morikami Japanese Gardens near Boca Raton, Florida. There are many kits and DIY ideas out there, but I have to say, if I was to do one - I would imitate this one, make it big and use natural bamboo and lots of rocks. A relatively simple project that just requires a pump and some imagination. This fountain operates on about a 50 second period and when full of water it falls and makes two loud knocks on rocks and then resets for another 50 seconds. One adjusts the length of the return knocks and how loud the knocks are by how many bamboo cells you open letting a certain volume of water collect and adjusting the pivot point. A large cavity and a slow period and heavy water for a big splash and loud knocks, which is what I would prefer. The ideas is that the loud knocks disturb deer that might eat your garden plants, but it doesn't bother the birds and other little critters. And really it functions as a meditative background. Enjoy three complete cycles of this unique fountain!

jimmy m I have multiple- the 2 black ones I can think of are the “flashy kimono” which is black and white with flowers, or “butterfly visiting kimono” in black. Other than those, they could’ve possibly been a custom design someone made, maybe? If it’s the 2 I listed above I’d love to give them to ya for free ofc! I would also recommend searching “kimono” on nookazon.com and making an offer in bells/nmt!

As a Japanese person, I think the environment in which Shishiodoshi suits me is: The water flowing from the mouth of the bamboo (thinner than the diameter of Shishiodoshi bamboo) Water enters the mouth of Shishiodoshi's bamboo, about once every 30 seconds. The bamboo knots of the Shishiodoshi hit the stone, producing a single high-pitched sound. The deer-like water is a stone hollowed out with a diameter of about 30 centimeters. It has fallen, and there are round gravel and no plants around it.

I am researching ancient sounds in anime for a final project. The main focus is Jiraiya (Naruto) and the sounds of Kabuki, but I am also looking at things like shishi odoshi ... just common ancient sound effects that are inserted into anime. I don't know the meaning of ANY of it, but I want to know. If anyone has any pointers (animes, what these sounds mean, etc) please let me know!

it would have to be enormous, this looks like a good 2-3ft piece of bamboo and it only takes 50 seconds to fill - but maybe you could put a small hole in the bottom so it drains out the back slower than it fills, and it still tips at 10 minutes, would be a lot of work to calibrate though
