In 1978 Marvel struck a deal with Japanese company the Toei Company licensing out their most popular characters. The result was Japanese Spider-Man (スパイダーマン) which was a huge success and ran for 41 episodes. However their were some changes including a mentor from the Planet Spider, Peter Parker being replaced with a motorcycle racer, along with Leopardon, a giant robot he uses to fight his greatest foe Doctor Monster. It's a wild ride. Thanks for listening!

For those curious, here's more info about the Marvel/Toei deal and how Spider-Man influenced the Super Sentai series (courtesy of me, the resident Tokusatsu expert) While Toei would not adapt any more Marvel heroes after Spider-Man, Toei and Marvel would continue working together for the next three Sentai shows: Battle Fever J, Denziman and Sun Vulcan. - As Mr Sunday mentioned in the video, *Battle Fever J* initially started out as a Captain America adaptation to follow Spider-Man. However, plans fell through and it was instead decided to be a revival of the Sentai series, that had been lying dormant since the failure of JAKQ Dengekitai 2 years prior. The Marvel influence can still be seen in Battle Fever, in how the five main heroes are themed after countries like Captain America (Battle Japan, Miss America, etc), and also in the designs of their helmets, which emulate Western superheroes by having molded in eyes, noses and mouths (unlike every other Sentai design before or since). Most famously, Battle Fever is the first Sentai show where the heroes pilot a mecha, which was of course, done first in Spider-Man. The first two Sentai shows, Goranger and JAKQ, did not have mecha battles. (Contrary to popular belief, Spider-Man did NOT create the Sentai franchise, Goranger predates it by a few years.) - *Denziman’s* Marvel influence can be seen in the shows’s main villain, Queen Hedrian, being modelled after the Marvel version of Hela. Queen Hedrian was played by Machiko Soga, most well known for playing Bandora in Zyuranger (Rita Repulsa in Power Rangers). Funnily enough, Shinji Todo, who played Takuya Yamashiro/Spider-Man, also appears in Denziman as Queen Hedrian’s main henchman. Denziman is also the first Sentai show to have an arm-mounted henshin device that the heroes use to transform, yet another thing taken from Spider-Man. - *Sun Vulcan* (which is a loose sequel to Denziman thx to having Queen Hedrian as an antagonist) does not contain any overt Marvel influence, but it is notable for being the Sentai show that Stan Lee attempted to bring over to the US. An episode was dubbed into English and shown, but was rejected by tv execs for being “too foreign”. However Stan Lee’s efforts were not in vain, as many years later Fox’s Margeret Loesch accepted Saban’s Power Rangers pitch due to her recognising it as being similar to what Stan had tried to do back in the 70s. (Btw, the English Sun Vulcan pilot has never surfaced online, and is considered lost media. There is a convincing-looking fake floating around online tho) Unlike Spider-Man, Marvel no longer owns any part of those three Sentai shows, so Toei has full ownership of them as far as I know. However, the universe of Battle Fever J is counted as Earth-79203 according to the Marvel Wiki, so it's still part of the Marvel multiverse, while also being part of the Sentai multiverse at the same time. Yup. (Oh, and there's also old magazine scans showing Spider-Man fighting alongside Kamen Rider V3, which perhaps suggests that Spider-Man takes place in the same universe as Kamen Rider. But since there's been virtually no follow-up to this since then, we can safely assume that was non-canon to either series.) It's also worth noting that Spider-Man was actually mostly written by Shozo Uehara, the legendary Tokusatsu writer who wrote most of the first five Super Sentai shows (Goranger-Sun Vulcan), so it's no coincidence that it shares so many tropes with the Sentai shows. He also worked on Return Of Ultraman, Kamen Rider Black, the Metal Heroes series, and many more. Basically, the guy wrote more Toku episodes than most normal people will ever watch. I’ll be sure to be back with more fun facts if James and Mason ever make another video about Tokusatsu. Which is probably never, so this segment is never coming back.

I feel like in Spider-Verse, Japanese Spider-Man will definitely be considered/used as a joke throughout most of the film, he's gonna appear to be the weakest Spider-Man especially if they show scenes of how slow he travels and enemies comically flipping over when fighting him. Then towards the end a massive monster/threat turns up and no-one has any idea how to take it on. Cue Japanese Spider-Man summoning Leopardon, beating the monster in the best action sequence in the film and earning the respect he deserves from the other Spiders!

Mason is totally right, the toy was somewhat designed independently from the show, that was a common practice in the industry at the time. One of the most famous cases of it was when Yoshiyuki Tomino (creator of Gundam) took an already designed toy that just looked like a transforming firetruck and then made show with it about a lovecraftian-like existential cosmic horror, apocalyptic robot-weapon, cold war’s nuclear deterrence allegory war drama story. I remember reading the Ready Player One book (this was long before the movie) and being so surprised that Leopardon (Japanese Spider-Man’s Robot) showed up in the final battle. Unfortunately we only got the Gundam and Mechagodzilla in the film. All 5 main heroes in the book get their own mech suit things and Leopardon and the Gundam were the two most recognizable. Also in the film, the Iron Giant is there to replace Ultra Man as the rights to that character were tied up between two companies at the time of production.

So the Marvel Ultraman comics can only use characters from that franchise, and cannot crossover with any other Marvel property. I know that first two seasons weren't considered to be a part of the franchise for some time, it's just the way it was worded, it sounded like as if Tokusatsu Spider-Man lead to the creation of the Super Sentai series, which, in some ways, is accurate but is also not correct.

I’ve been looking forward to this all week and it did not disappoint. I love how loosely they adapted spiderman and were really just riffing and keeping it fun. Honestly some of the changes kind of work, like his father investigating the ship landing before he dies and his girlfriend’s boss also being one of the villains, as opposed to Jameson just ruining spidey’s reputation. So much charm and creativity behind this when it could’ve easily been another terrible failed pilot like Dr Strange, Nick Fury, or one of the x men related shows Maybe give the animated MTV series a look next

I watched the marvel 618 episode on this show and the actor seemed so sweet and genuinely appreciative and happy to have been involved in the Marvel and Spider-Man universe… if they don’t include him as the voice actor in Across the Spider-Verse it will be a real shame. He truly deserves it as both a lost member - and fan of - the series.

Leopardon toys were actually released in America as part of the Shogun Warriors toyline, which consisted of various imported Japanese robot toys. Marvel published a comic based on this toyline, but only licensed three of the robots, and Leopardon was not among them.

I was very disappointed by the Japanese Spiderman's usage in the Spider-verse comic. What they showed was pretty much all of it : he jumps in Leopardon and the villain just kills him immediately. What a waste. Also, either I'm having a fever dream and confusing this with Italian Spiderman, or you apparently didn't get to the scene where some evil lady pulls off his mask, but there's another one underneath. And then again and again. Parker could learn a thing or two from this guy.

About Supaidaman and Super Sentai - Super Sentai actually came first, Himitsu Sentai Gorenger debuted in 1975 while Supaidaman debuted in 1978, but it is true that Supaidaman introduced the concept of the transforming mecha, as the first Sentai had just motorcycles the same way Kamen Rider had and the J.A.K.Q. Dengekitai had a car. Battle Fever J, the third series (which was also in collaboration with Marvel, as mentioned, and initially intended to be called "Captain Japan" and be about a Japanese hero collaborating with heroes from around the globe) was the first Super Sentai show to introduce the mechas, in 1979.

Super Sentai actually existed before this show, but as an extension of the espionage-and-cool-vehicles trend of the sixties. After Supaidaman brought up the idea, the Sentai series got its first giant robot in Battle Fever J, but there were two whole Sentai shows that just had cool cars and such! Edit: Today I learned some trivia about Battle Fever J that I wasn't expecting. It was *what*???

This was one of a few deals Marvel had with Toei Studios. The others off the top of my head were Battle Fever J, Denjiman, and Sun Vulcan. The last one is the most interesting because that is the one Stan Lee personally liked the most and wanted to localize it in the 80's to Western TV but the TV producers said kids would never understand it because its Japanese. Fast forward a few years later and Haim Saban did the same thing but with 1993's Zyuranger, also from Toei, and boom Power Rangers was born and became a billion dollar franchise. Just imagine if they had listened to Stan Lee back then since he already had a relationship with Toei, and Marvel would have been in a completely different place in the 90's and 00's with possibly (probably) no near bankruptcy like they did, which woulda meant not having to sell off their superhero movie rights to Universal (Hulk), Fantastic Four/X-Men (Fox) and Spider-Man (Sony)

Battle Fever J was originally conceived as a sort of "Team of Captain Americas of the world" with a 'Captain Japan' in charge. Eventually the team because Battle Japan, Battle France, Battle Cossack, Battle Kenya and Miss America (who is also a character in Marvel comics I believe??). Battle Fever J is BONKERS and I urge you to watch a couple episodes... at least until the giant robot is eventually introduced a few episodes in (it has a nice buildup to it honestly). TOEI and Marvel would then go on to produce Taiyou Sentai Sun Vulcan, a show Stan Lee wanted to bring the US but couldn't convince anyone to do so. After that the two companies parted ways and TOEI just kept making Super Sentai show until... well... now. And at least until next year. ZENRYOKU ZENKAI!
