I'm so jealous of your Japanese speaking skills! I would say my reading, writing (typing mostly), and listening are at an intermediate level but my speaking skill is so so low because I don't practice speaking at all. I need to get over the whole fear of making mistakes and just speak!

It really be like that. I really really wish I had started getting ready for HSK 1 four years ago. I would have been somewhere in the high level of intermediate by now.💀Instead I was stubborn and just wanted to do it on my own and not pay attention to levels. I need to take the HSK test to find what level I am on.

Thanks for the recommendations!! I'm currently studying abroad in Japan, and my lack of communication skills kinda get in the way from time to time... The dictionary looked great, especially with example sentences! That makes understanding the words some much easier.

Your tip to do a little over a long time really helped! I tend to feel overwhelmed thinking about going back to studying Japanese after a long gap. But doing a little each day - like 10-15 mins on my Memrise app - makes it seem doable!

I'm learning Hiragana right now. I've been studying and practicing for 2 days now. I think I got it down except when I have to read them with tenten or maru...This is only Hiragana and it's already quite confusing for me. 😂😂

I use the vol 1 and just in one day I can recognize 70 kanjis (very basic kanjis though) in just two days but I couldn't write them well from memory. For me that it's pretty amazing because my memory sucks.

I think the key to learning languages is through examples and repetition and just exposing yourself to the language all the time. I've been trying to watch Japanese shows as often as I can and that helps-specific phrases keep popping up and I remember that

In my opinion is to do phrases and stuff but learn hiragana, and katakana at the same time. Then you'll learn kanji by reading or watching stuff with subtitles.

私は日本人ですが自身が幼少期に日本語を身につけつつある時期の記憶があります。相手や話者が何を伝えようとしているのか気持ちを読もうと学びました。簡単な会話を繰り返している中であらゆる表現文法を身につけたように覚えています。それからひらがなを覚えました。漢字はテレビなどのニュースで読みから覚え学校で書き方を覚えました。。発音は舌が回らない時にはやはり日本人ですが何度も練習しました。話すときの抑揚も何度も疑問を持ち、練習しました。懐かしいです。

Use the Genki books they are super useful for beginners. Genki 1 and Genki 2 are super easy to find online just search for their pdfs :)

First. Hiragana, Katakana (english in japan such as summertime,telephone,hairband with out change to japanese) Then kanji. You must atleast know 2000kanji. Ps. I learn hiragana and remember it in 1weeks (1day off for my poor brain😅)

if you were already introduced to kanji, it'll probably be easier to visualize. Japan was colonized by china, and "on'yomi" or "on reading" would be the way chinese peiple would say the word, as japanese people hear it. The pronounciation can be similar but not the same. On the other side, kun'yomi is the way japanese people already pronounced that kanji meaning, before even having an alphabet. Ex: 中 in kun'yomi is なか(naka), and in on'yomi is ちゅう(chuu). In chinese it is said like "zhōng" hope it helped ╰(⸝⸝⸝´꒳`⸝⸝⸝)╯

There are 3 writing systems that are all used at the same time. Hiragana is mainly used for grammar such as verb endings or particles. (it's used for the japanese equivalents of a, the, -ing, -ed) Katakana is used mainly for loan/foreign words and foreign names. (coffee in japanese is コーヒー which is spelled in katakana because it is not a word the japanese invented) Kanji are mainly for nouns or adjectives or verb stems. Kanji can be spelled out in hiragana when you are still a beginner. (used for words like dog, cat, big, small, to run, to read, to see) You can learn Hiragana and Katakana pretty fast but kanji will take a lot of memorizing since there are so many.
