Thanks for introducing new Yen notes. I am from Japan but have lived in U.S.A. for over 50 years and didn’t know about new yen notes coming. I am planning for a trip to Japan in this fall and this will help me. I enjoy your videos.

One important thing: new currency rollouts normally happen over the course of several months (sometimes a few years if necessary). There is eventually a deadline after which you can no longer use or exchange them. You don’t have to do anything special or extraordinary; just spend/use them normally and the stores and banks will do the rest. If you are stuck with old notes (or coins if the case may be) you can exchange them for a specific time period at banks. The details will vary by country and currency but that is the basic process. I'm sure you can get the specifics online or at a bank. Finally, these rules and processes only apply to currency that is being pulled from circulation and being replaced or phased out.

V interesting. A lot of countries are doing this. In the uk, we had polymer plastic notes for last 20 years or so. They last longer and are difficult if not impossible to rip. So last longer, printing money costs money. Also governments are reducing amount of money in circulation. Forcing people into a cashless economy. For Japan this will be felt more than other countries . On the plus side, i love the ¥2000 note. Have to get one of those next trip to japan.

is Japan not introducing ¥2,000 or ¥20,000 bills? giving the declining yen value, ¥10,000 is now €58 approx. I thought maybe BoJ would include those, or ¥200 coins. And yeah, US bills are terrible but they are cool to have at the same time

I got 2000yen notes in Okinawa and kept them all :-) They are obviously well loved there for obvious reasons. Looking forward to these new ones. About Security with touch... I add digital visa cards and pay with my phones and watches... they add the security you need on top. Basically exactly works like the cards, though obviously it does not work with old devices that require you to insert the card.

I have 2000 yen notes from my 2018 trip and recently my USA bank also gave me 2000 yen notes for my Mar/Apr 2024 trip. A clerk refused to accept the 2000 yen note and fortunately my tour guide overheard the conversation and explained it is legitimate currency and had to defer to the supervisor. They accepted the bill but I foresee more problems as I still have this denomination. Don’t know when my next trip will be but my first stop might need to be the bank and exchange those bills. 🤷‍♀️

It’s still in circulation. It is not stopping. DO NOT worry about the ¥2000 note 😉 It will be accepted and is also okay in many train vending machines. Just keep ‘em if you plan to come in the next 1-2 years. If I longer than that, maybe exchange them. It’s going to take a while before the new bills are circulated and the old ones circulated out.

The technology has been around since the early 80's, but Australia was the first country to fully adopt polymer banknotes for its money back in 1996! Canada was the 8th country since then to adopt the polymer bill for all of its non-coin banknotes back in 2011, and yes, we have the holographic anti-counterfeiting in our notes too back then. Over 16 countries, including Australia and Canada have issued a full series of polymer banknotes to replace their former cotton paper banknotes since 1996, with many other countries (over 60) having at least some of their banknotes printed on polymer stock now. Its cost effective in that the new polymer bills last 2.5 to 3 times longer than their cotton cousins leading to the need to replace them with newer notes to be drastically reduced, thus saving massive amounts of money in printing up new bills. as to costs of printing? Measured in US dollars, it costs roughly $0.10 per banknote to print on paper, as opposed to $0.23 per banknote to print using the polymer stock. The savings come in the longevity of the polymer note over that of its paper cousin. In other words, you need to print the paper note three(3) times to match the longevity of printing the polymer note just once(1).
@steadholderharrington9035
@steadholderharrington9035 2 ай бұрын
@@onlyinjapanGO Its actually the longevity of the polymer notes over their paper cousins that marks where the savings come in. The polymer note lasts almost 3 times longer than the paper ones do, even when the printing of the paper banknotes is only about $0.10USD per banknote as opposed to it being about $0.23USD to print a polymer banknote. When you have to print each paper banknote three(3) times to match the longevity of just printing the polymer banknote only once, you can quickly see where the savings start to add up. And the polymer bills are wicked hard to counterfeit, even at the best of times, which is why a lot of countries are switching over to the polymer banknote.

It should be noted that another security feature that these new banknotes have is in that "blank" area on either the front or back of the bills where the double Strike lines go through, will be "watermark images" which will reflect out a picture whenever the light hits the space from the correct direction for you to see the image. The tactile parts of the bill, is called Braille Type, and it tells blind persons exactly which denomination of banknote that they hold in their hands.

I have never heard Shibasaburo's true intentions. I will not hesitate to use the old name this time, but he founded the Kitasato Institute and apparently infected 250,000 soldiers of the former army with Beri-Beri disease. Of those, 30,000 soldiers died. There has never been such a great result! I am impressed by Shibasaburo's achievements. He looks just like someone. That person is the face of the new banknote, which was introduced in the 6th year of Reiwa after the war. I'm a graduate of Tokyo University, so I laughed out loud at the funny stuff about Kitasato and the Ig Nobel Prize, but I honestly think I was making fun of Shibasaburo. The portrait on this new banknote must have been obese and on medication. Or it could simply be that they chose to use a portrait of him from when he was fat (how could that be!) on the new 1,000 yen bill. Thank you, Shibasaburo. I appreciate your achievement that you killed 30 thousand soldiers and injured 250 thousand soldiers in the old army. Thursday, July 18, 2024, 0735 JST. At Denny's. At Denny's. Thank you for the breakfast that was worthy of a first-class hotel. I feel like I've gone from being a monkey back into a human. Back when I left Japan in November of 2023. I forgot to spend the 1000 yen bill I had with me. Planning on using it when I return in spring of 2025. Guess now I can keep it as a collection now. That or bring it and the yen I still have with me and put it on to my ic card when I return.

I like the Indonesian Rupiah because the bills are colorful/color-coded for each amount so you know instantly which bill to pull out from your wallet when paying so it's quicker lol. I always have a hard time in the US or Japan when paying cash because i feel like i'm holding up the line (the bills and its colors all look so similar)

I had been holding on to my last 1000en note from when I spent a night near Narita 12 years ago. I swore it would be my first one spent when I travel to Japan for real. 12 years and 2 kids later, I'm glad it was the 1000 that bought my first machine drink that kept me from collapsing from sleepiness last week on my way to my first hotel in Tōkyō. I plan on keeping a brand new 1000en until I come back.

$1600 for a $500 bill. Ironically, it's probably worth less in real terms than when it was printed. Certainly if you've held it all this time, you probably would have been better putting that money into anything else.

Be aware small and local business and restaurants may not accept the older money, I had that issue when I had some bank notes from the 1990s and the family had dinner and no one had cash except me and they didn’t accept credit cards, the owner/chef used his own money to do an exchange great guy, but a little embarrassing and uncomfortable 😢

Is printing money a way that government keeps citizens poor as inflation makes paper money worth less by holding on to old & new bills ?

Huh? Every country has paper currency. I don’t see the relation. The JP YEN is one of a handful of major international currencies. Paper notes highlight culture and achievement, in the tech to keep them from being faked to the people and scenes on the notes.

@@onlyinjapanGO I'm thinking of future currency trends; thus questioning worth of paper money. I read in China, money is exchanged with cell phone Alipay. Maybe in future, digital money will be more efficient than cost of paper money transactions. I think in some countries, inflation increases so much that a paper note is devalued; thus citizens can buy less if holding on to traditional paper money. Governments easily print money (to pay government debt) while citizens "think" they are getting valuable money, but in reality their purchasing power is lessen over time (like a tax overtime for holding paper currency.) Anyways I'm not an economist. All viewpoints are welcomed.
