Saving Honey Bees: Dragonfly Figurine vs. Giant Hornets

In this video, we conduct an intriguing experiment to see if a dragonfly figurine can save honey bees from the relentless attacks of giant hornets. The golden-ringed dragonfly is a formidable predator in Japan, and we've modeled a figurine after it to test its effectiveness as a decoy. Watch as we place the figurine near a struggling colony of Japanese honey bees and observe the hornets' reactions.

A potential idea would be to use a bit of tech using not only a small camera but also a microphone, attached to a raspberry pi and programmed to only turn on the current when detecting the hornets specifically within range by wing vibration tones and visual recognition programmed into it, set a specific bait trap that only the hornets would be attracted to that honeybees won’t go after (such as protein), and a tiny speaker connected to output a sound that the honeybees ignore but attract the hornets. If set up a meter away from the hive in weatherproof housing and on solar-powered rechargeable batteries, especially if you have multiples of them surrounding the hive, it could work well to lure and kill only the hornets and otherwise inactive when only the honeybees are around and touching it. In fact, the housing for the battery, raspberry pi, bait, speaker, camera, microphone and solar panel can be constructed from similar beehive box wood materials on a much smaller scale with fake entrances to fool even the smarter hornets, if honey is also used in the bait but the fake mini hive housing is sealed enough to prevent honeybees from entering it despite scent holes in the sides.

Identifying the hornets shouldn't be too difficult, but a laser system would probably be too complex, since it would need to aim. Maybe electrify the dragonfly instead when a hornet is detected.
@sencis9367
@sencis9367 Күн бұрын
It seems to me that aiming with a laser will not be too difficult if you determine the parallax of the camera and enter coefficients to calibrate the aiming point. I think that hornets will not always attack a dragonfly and can get used to it, which will make the electric fly swatter in dragonfly useless, laser protection will not allow this. Although this looks much more complicated, it will also solve more problems.

Given that most insects use scent for communication and sensing their surroundings, it's not surprising the dragonfly was pretty useless. The company selling this thing need to figure out how to make it SMELL like a dragonfly. Of course, if they could do that you wouldn't need the fake dragonfly, just spray the scent around the hive. One thing i dont understand is why beekeepers don't put up mesh fencing a few feet from the hive where the mesh is large enough for bees but too small for the hornets. Seems kinda like a no brainer to me, but whatever🤷

The only way i see this working is if you manually had a option to make its wings flap to make it more convincing plus a manual button to give the dragonfly a current of electric whenever you see a hornet actually messing with it. If its automatic it might present more danger to the honey bees then the hornets. I feel like maybe if someone was able to use and identify the pheromones the hornets give off but combine it with a zapper function for the said hornets maybe that might be something worth trying out as an experiment? They seem very organized as a hornet colony so one way to get their attention would be using a similar pheromone they give off some kind of smell that attracts them to a different location.

those hornets over there are like yellow jackets in the US.. they are everywhere and with rather large colonies.. if you kill one, the pheromone it gives as its dying will draw dozens if not more to the spot where it was killed.. the beekeeper would never be able to kill them all to the point there is no more distress pheramone .. thats why when you watch the videos where they use glue sheets that a hundred hornets end up on the sheet.. it attracts more rather than stops the attack..

@simeonellinger2064

No they likely think the hive is weak because of the lack of bee pheromones and small response from the bees because there aren't very many bees in that hive. Less bees means easy target. If you kill a hornet, the rest will swarm the area in response. Be prepared to flee for your life, they're deadly.

It would have to be an ENORMOUS greenhouse, like at least an acre, if not more, in order to grow enough flowers to support a hive. Each flower only has a couple microliters (one thousandth of a ml) of nectar, so the hive would need several hundred thousand if not millions of flowers to support it. And don't forget, bees need pollen too. And let's say we could build a greenhouse that big. We'd have to make sure every tiny opening was sealed to keep the hornets out. And we'd have to check it several times a day. Not possible because we'd have to supply the water and keep it ventilated with giant fans to keep it from overheating. It'd be extremely expensive. I don't know about you, but I'd rather not have to pay $1000 for a jar of honey😊

These hornets can and have chewed right through wooden hives. Hives need to be made of or faced with metal. And even if a hornet gets in, Japanese honeybees (not European/American honeybees, tho) have a defense mechanism where they rush the hornet and form a "bee ball" around it, vibrating their wings like crazy. This causes the inside of the ball to heat up to around 115 degrees F, which the bees can tolerate but cooks the hornet. Unfortunately this defense only works against one or two scouts. If hornets attack en mass they kill all the adult bees and steal the babies to feed their larva back at the nest. It's kinda sad, really.

@MrMan5014 Yes, I saw that. The thing is, if an entire swarm of hornets attacked the hive, they would indeed chew a new hole somewhere else, and they could probably do it in about five minutes. But unfortunately metal hives aren't really an option, since it would cause overheating in the summer, especially in Japan, which is known for its hot and humid summers. As I mentioned in another thread, I don't see why beekeepers don't erect hardware mesh fencing several feet around each hive. The mesh would be large enough to allow bees but too small for hornets. It'd be pretty cheap and easy, too.
