I used Suica last time I was in Japan and I got it with my name printed on the front. It made using the commuter trains so easy. The commuter passes would probably be cheaper yes but many of them are not usable on other lines, (although I know that a few versions of commuter passes do work for different companies).Just keep money on the card, tap in, ride the train tap out the fare is automatically calculated and the balance is displayed on the screen at the exit gate so you know exactly how much is left and if you need to top up again

We have something in Ontario called a Presto Card. It's essentially the same thing. You can ride any GO train or GO bus (and some non-GO buses) as long as you have money on your card. It's pretty useful, and it turns out to be cheaper than buying a ticket every time because there's a lower set fee on it. I feel like experience with the Presto Card would make using a Pasmo Card pretty simple and easy.

We have something similar in Denmark which is called travelcard. We can only use it for trains and busses and not on other stuff. If you use it a lot you get a discount on your travels. The card is a lot cheaper even if you don't travel a lot because there is already a small discount when using the card rather than paying with change.

I used Pasmo in Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto. I had one for myself and one for my 6-year old daughter. Getting a Pasmo for a minor is a little more involved as you have to talk to a station attendant as the machines don't create cards for a minor by default. The fare adjustments are also really useful. There wasn't enough credit on one of the Pasmo cards for our train journey from Osaka to Kansai but I didn't want to put 1000 yen on the card... Just did the fare adjustment at the airport and paid the exact amount to make up the fare.

I have a Suica with my name on it xD Purchased it when I was there last year. That aside, I still find the fact that Japanese ticket gates are open by default great. It shows how much trust there is that you'll pay your fare. I'm not sure if they do it in other countries, since the only countries I've been to are pretty much my own (Singapore), Malaysia (which is by default closed until you pay) and Japan. In Singapore, the faregates are closed until you tap the card too.

I have a Monorail Suica. Which means that instead having a pingouin, I have a monorail smiling. And it is so cute! If you want a similar card, the better choice is to buy it at the Haneda airport monorail station vending machines which are easy to find when leaving the arrivals hall. And if you want a blue Suica instead of having a green one, buy it in a Rinkai line ticket office. But first time I visited Japan as tourist, I had a Pasmo and it is also good. If you are a tourist, that’s a good option. And if you are French, private stations machines are available in French and the translation is good!

As some of you may know, the " welcome suica " sold at Tokyo Monorail's Haneda Airport station can be bought without a deposit. (Instead, they expire after 28 days.) Also, in the video, it was mentioned that you cannot take the Shinkansen, but by pre-registering, you can take the Tohoku Shinkansen, Joetsu Shinkansen, Hokuriku Shinkansen and other services such as 'touch de go Shinkansen'. Also, suica with a deposit will expire after 10 years without use, so use it from time to time. (This text was made on a translation website. If the English translation is incorrect, I apologise)

As a regular visitor to Japan, I’d definitely recommend getting an IC card. However, personally I’d suggest Suica over Pasmo for 2 reasons: 1) In my experience Pasmo cards can be a bit erratic regarding where in Japan they function: Suica is better in different cities. 2) Tokyo Metro (with whom you have to deal when you need a balance and deposit refunding, or card that’s just stopped working) has very poor customer service, unlike Japan Railways where you get your Suica - which works well on both all the subways lines and suburban trains too.
