If you mix a drop of gum arabic to each gouache paint pan it will keep it from cracking and falling apart. Windsor & Newton sells it in a bottle.

I have one of those 'seals each compartment completely' storage palettes, ran into that mold problem a couple of times as well. Only way around it was to just open it up as soon as I got home and let all the paint dry *completely* overnight if I knew I wasn't going to be getting into it for a while.

Really like the "credit card size" painting idea. I'm at the stage where I just need to do lots of it to learn but big paintings feel kind of daunting. Thanks for that!

I watched this video when it first came out. My apologies for not commenting yet. Thank you for answering my question. I was delighted! I really liked how you explained that you too have time constraints when you are plein air painting and assured us viewers that our goal doesn't have to be (shouldn't?) representing the scene 100 percent, but to enjoy the learning experience and to reflect on the things we were able to successfully capture in the time we had. I also understood from your answer that we can enjoy our paintings for what they are. This was really helpful to me and encourages me to start painting and drawing outdoors again. I'm excited to capture the things that interest me and , as always, increase my skill and understanding with each piece.

I am always too scared to do anything when it comes to painting outside. I forced myself to do it ones, and I made a friend, old grandma who told me she used to paint and thanked me for painting outside. The feeling I got from that exchange is undescribable, and so worth it. I just now need to have motivation to do it again.

It’s a lot easier if you have a paint buddy to paint plein air with you outside. I am an introvert, and just being with someone close with me, makes me feel confident and comfortable to do extrovert stuff like painting outside. It also feels less awkward to be stared at by passer bys if you have someone painting along beside you.

so thankful I found this video--spent an entire day worrying about the sky color for a scene my son asked for. You reminded me why my son asked for the scene --and it wasn't to get the perfect sky colour. I appreciate your perspective, thank you.

Yeah, when your wet pigments run in to one another because the palette wasn't level in the bag - PAINT MURDER! I'm always on the lookout for palettes that have a particular configuration but will fit in my little back-pack stool combination. Currently using a cheap Jusku palette which just-a-say fits.

@@JaredCullum I think the Juskü is not dissimilar to the Yasutomo which you mentioned recently apart from the wells which are only in one half of the clamshell. It fits pretty snugly at the bottom of my camping stool back pack (handy because it gets firmly wedged in there) which is something you can get off amazon and is designed for fishermen I believe.

Hi Mr. Cullum. Thanks for answering my question! I got a lot of useful insights from your tips for others as well ( ^ u ^ ) I found it comforting to hear that you started with indoor painting/ painting from photo references before venturing out to plein air. I recently bought a book with Norman Rockwell's painting and have a library of urban photos that I've accumulated over the years. Patience and consistent practice really seems to be the key. I'll pace myself and start where it's comfortable instead of forcing myself into "things-I-should-do."

@@JaredCullum James Gurney and classical artists are often recommended, but it's kind of surreal for you to mention Lena Rivo or PixelPChan. I've been following their works for a while and to hear that you admire the same people was refreshing. We're usually told to always look up to someone rather than look at our fellow peers. So... Unexpected yes, but refreshing (=^ u ^=)

김본중졸 thank you! I plan on it. Next up will be plein air watercolor. It’s my preferred medium but I get mostly questions about gouache. Haha gouache painters are louder than watercolor. Every time I do watercolor videos I get a handful of messages asking for more gouache. It’s nice to hear from a watercolor enthusiast. :)

Hey Jared! I was wondering how you develop your patience! I mean, I usually end up repainting an area too early before it dries and u know better what happens next! You seem like not waiting at all for your underpaint to dry! thanks
@JaredCullum
@JaredCullum 4 жыл бұрын
I don't! I kinda try to time it in my head but one of the things I love the best is when you can pull wet into just barely wet and get that lush blur you get naturally with oil paint. It's tough to get with gouache without erasing under or going over. But there's a sweet spot where you can get that look. Teddi Parker is an incredible acrylic painter but you'd think she paints oil because of the same thing and I've seen her say that it's the same goal.
@MsNavidude
@MsNavidude 4 жыл бұрын
@@JaredCullum oh I get it! I think that's a key part for me to improve, trying not to ALWAYS wait for a completely dry base before putting a new layer, Thanks for the answer :) PS, man Teddi Parker is so great

Bozmund Os oh they are definitely worth buying. WN is a little easier to buy cheaper locally but I love MG gouache and only use it these days. They have a decent primary kit of 4 colors and you can add a few essentials and get a limited set for a decent price. You may want to use a little cheap plastic palette to start so you don’t have to worry about the spray having issues unless you’ve made them before. Yasumtomo makes an Awesome little cheap box for like $8 that is very flat and portable and sturdy but not super bulky like the cheap ones tend to be. Good luck!

@@JaredCullum I think imma gather a good amount of money because I'm from South America and only some guys called "elf global shipping" or something only send it over here and.... It's expensive as hEll and takes month and a half to arrive, and there's no yellows sent by Amazon shipping or even in eBay there's no m.graham yellows... Well I'll make a plan later, (though I'm really trying to not go for w&n, it's total 30 dollars for the primary set.... Or maybe yeah....) Anyways, soon my both Daniel Smith wc sets (primary and primatek) will be arriving here soon and probably I'm the one going to get it to the shipping, I just knew about gouache and I wanted to see what was convenient to get since I'm pretty fine with three primaries, black and white. How is it to work the w&n designers gouache? I might end buying it ;v... And sorry if I'm making you waste some time....
