Fantastic special effects by Ray Harryhausen and exciting mythological adventure make this a film that is fun for everyone. It's the story of Jason (Todd Armstrong), a fearless sailor and explorer, who returns to the kingdom of Thessaly after a 20-year voyage to make his rightful claim to the throne. But to do so, Jason must first find the magical Golden Fleece. He selects a crew and with the help of Hera, Queen of the Gods, sets sail in search of the Fleece. Jason and his crew must overcome incredible obstacles including a 100-foot bronze giant, the venomous Hydraa huge creature with the heads of seven snakes, and a spectacular battle with an army of skeletons.

Ray always worked alone when animating. He had to animate 7 snake heads as well as 2 tails. Each frame was a 24th of a second and he was only able to average about 13 frames a day (about a half a second of film). This scene is about 4 and a half minutes and it took him about 4 and a half months. It's an absolute masterpiece of animation. Ray Harryhausen was a true wizard of stop motion special effects.

I love the way Leonard Nimoy said it on the Ray harryhausen documentary on this scene, "Todd Armstrong playing Jason here had the easy task, he only needed to slay the Monster, Ray Harryhausen had to bring Hydra to convincing life!, All those heads and tails in simultaneous menacing motion." And Bring it to life he did, his stop motion is simply incredible even by todays standards!

To those who say these special effects are not inferior to CGI, you're right! These computer geeks stood on the shoulders of giants, if I may use that phrase, and Harryhausen was the biggest giant of all.

Ray Harryhausen once said if a phone or doorbell rang he has to remember which hydra he moved last before answering. You can see why he did only a handful of films last of which was in 1981 with *"Clash Of the Titans."* He was a one man show.

CGI is the most soulless form of animation. I wish it never came to be. Imagine how much more advanced (and thus, better looking) stop motion would be today if it had been allowed to continue to grow instead of being snuffed out by CGI.

JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS is a classic pure and simple, much better than a lot of the sword and sandal stuff of the day. If memory serves, JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS and CLEOPATRA both started out with about the same budget ($3 million). The former was a classic that stayed within budget, whereas the latter went crazy ($40 million), and wasn't ever a real classic. At least it got Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor together, so that we could see films like TAMING OF THE SHREW and WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOLF.

For all the heads to work in tandem one of the heads of the Hydra would have to lead the other heads and body. In the original myth was Jason a demigod or all human? Percis was the son of Zeus and a mortal woman. Makes it more moving as man vs gods.
