The Nine Club

2 жыл бұрын

Jason Lee discusses growing up in Southern California, first learning 360 flips in his backyard, meeting Mark Gonzales for the first time, skating Christian Hosoi’s backyard vert ramp, getting on Blind Skateboards, filming for “Video Days”, starting Blue Skateboards with Chris Pastras, why they ended Blue and started Stereo Skateboards, skating with Julien Stranger in San Francisco, how quickly skating was progressing in the early 90’s, why he “retired” from skating and started acting, shooting his first movie, doing voice over work for video games and being in Skate 3 as Coach Frank, getting the lead role in the TV show “My Name Is Earl”, taking up photography, his photography books and much more!

When Lee gets asked about skateboarding in interviews it’s always quick and then they move on to movie stuff. 3+ hours of him talking skating was absolutely amazing. I need 3 more hours of this.

The Studios pay them what they do to PROMOTE the Films more than for the Acting itself. They dont want to pay someone to fly around the world for months leading up the release of a movie, staying in High End hotels, paying for security, Riders etc for them to talk about SkateBoarding and NOT the film they are supposed to be promoting. That makes this SOOOO much more special. To see him talk about Skate boarding like you KNOW he's always wanted to is an absolute JOY! Been a fan of Jason Since MallRats, Knew he was a Pro Skater but was bit before my time, and My Name Is Earl is STILL one my favourite shows of all time Killer episode boys Big Love from Australia!

"Once you´re a skater - you´ll always be a skater" - so true. Im turning 45 this year, had to end my 15 years of skating due to knee injuries and such when I was 30 and still I cannot get that "look for spots" out of my head. I´m still always on the lookout for ledges, stairs, rails and such. Even after 15 years of NOT skating anymore (cant believe its that long tbh) Nobody will ever understand this who never skated.

They say you should never meet your heroes, but in my experience meeting Jason Lee on set was a moment I'll never forget. So humble and kind, he remembered my name and everyone else's throughout the shoot and he even ate with us on lunch break. I picked his brain a little about blind and stereo but didnt want to be that guy, yet he was totally open to talking skating with me (no one else knew what we were talking about). he was super hyped on Yoshi Tenenbaum who was just coming up. Thanks for being an all around awesome dude Jason.

This is surreal for me. I skated with Jason back in the day and was fortunate enough to skate with Gonz and Natas in Balboa a couple times. Jason talking about meeting Gonz hit so close to home because the three of us skated and then drove up to Jerry’s Deli right around that time. I was like “Mark Gonzales is in my car!!!” I still believe that was the beginning of Jay getting into show biz. Awesome interview!!! Thank you.

They touch on the insane progression of street skating between 1986 and 1991 at about an hour into the interview. I started skating right around '86, and witnessing the progression of street skating in those five years was really amazing. When you watch footage from a street contest from 1985 compared to what skaters like Lee, Gonz and Natas were doing in contests in 1988 is just nuts. There should be a full-length documentary about this era. The story here that Lee tells about Gonz driving to his house to see the 360 flip is so great. A full documentary filled with little stories like this would be killer.

He doesn’t mention his Rob Maggie days and being on Illusion Skateboards with Ron Chatman. He was doing 360 kick flips at ASU. And I was doing Ollie flip 50/50 grinds. Jason was cool and said what’s up? I like that trick your doing. I said busy one of those 360 flips to fifty fifty. He did it. It wasn’t 50/50 and sketch AF. But he get a grind out of it. He was cool AF. We skated in contests together a lot. I was good friends with Randy Colvin. So that got me in with the whole world blind team. What a fucking awesome experience in 88-91 skating with those guys. Ron was my favorite. Him and Jason were fucking out the chain Hillarious to hang and skate with.

Amazing episode. I love everything about the Nine club. Almost Famous is one of my favorite movies of all time. I think Jason hit the nail on the head. Once a skater always a skater. I haven't been on a board in 23 years but, still love that time in my life and respect the hell outta skateboarding in all of it's facets. The end of the episode struck a cord with me. I bought my first skateboard at Stratosphere Skate Shop in Little 5 back in 94'. It was a Stereo deck with Venture trucks. It was eye opening for a teenager coming down from the Burbs. A few years later we'd skate downtown ATL Bellsouth, Marta stations, Federal building, 40 yd etc. Truly a magical time in my life. Great to the see the spirit of skateboarding alive and better than ever. I still can't look at things and not think about skating them even after all these years. I have a skateboarders mindset in life and it's bleed over into my current passion of fly fishing. Keep em coming boys.

Jason’s video days part is one of my favorite parts of all time. He doesn’t give himself enough credit because he keeps comparing himself to koston. But mannnnn.. that part was so rad. That mega line he does in the playground is so cool. The way he 5050 FS shovs out on a bench in the middle of a line flawlessly and effortlessly. It was way ahead of its time, he was almost as good as guy Mariano. And the way he switch 180d and does perfect BS 180s. For pros those tricks are all easy but for the average skater, to do such a big line full of combination tricks and nollie tricks is hard AF. Also such great style

I turn 50 this year but skating has been a huge part of life since I was around 8 or 9 - I don’t get to ride as much these days but even a cruise and a few gentle pops brings the smile. I’m sure I had a few posters of Jason from old editions of Read and Destroy magazine or copies of Thrasher that we used to get when record stores used them to protect the vinyl during import into the UK. You can’t sit through this without getting the biggest smile on your face and just radiating from stoke. Great work guys
