In the second game after they learned in December they’d be without both Darius Garland and Evan Mobley for a while, the Cleveland Cavaliers beat the Houston Rockets in overtime. That night on Dec. 18, Donovan Mitchell played 45 minutes, including the entire second half and all but four seconds of the extra period.
After the game, Cavs president Koby Altman walked into the coach’s office and admonished head coach J.B. Bickerstaff in front of his entire staff for playing Donovan Mitchell such heavy minutes, multiple sources briefed on the interaction told The Athletic. Descriptions of the incident spread across the organization, including the locker room.
“(Altman) got at J.B.,” one player said of the incident.
The immediate aftermath of that night was confusing. For instance, Altman was unaware at the time he was scolding Bickerstaff that the coach had asked Mitchell if he wanted to come out, according to league sources, and Mitchell declined. Yet, Mitchell was absent from the court for Cleveland’s next four games due to what the team called a non-COVID illness.

Kolby not bout to escape accountability. He drafted all them short guards, And he hella quiet. He passed up and missed out on all type of talent. Darius had no business ever being pared with a ball dominant guard who is the same height as him. It was a good evaluation of the tow for best fit, but its incompetent on front office.

It sucks because I think DG can still be very good but it’s clear him and DM can’t coexist against certain lineups and the fact that it’s likely DM will leave is annoying. I appreciate Altman for going all in and trying to accelerate the timeline but small guards playing in the same backcourt is a thing of the past and in the foreseeable future it will be nonexistent as a part of teams schemes for a majority of games.

If DM extends, then it's him & Mobley who the team need to build around. They are by far the most talented & important players on the roster. In all honesty, I said that with this roster we would win 60 or more games, and we won 48 games, all because of poor coaching, and the others (except Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen) not wanting to step up and help Mitchell, which is why we lost so many regular season games we were not supposed to lose. If they had just stepped up, we would've been the 2nd or 3rd seed and would've faced the Philadelphia 76ers or Indiana Pacers instead.

How did this roster tell you they would win 60 games or more? I can tell you how you did that, simply its…you, you lack the comprehension on how to evaluate and analyze NBA players. Here's my point: you can only go up to 3 days, bordering on 3 weeks without food and water, and going beyond that can lead to death. And my eating and drinking is clearly not the reason Cleveland struggled this season. Plus, I can only spend my summer at the NIU campus if I'm taking summer classes.

There are a ton of problems with the make up of this Cleveland team, especially the "Core Four" namely: 1). Darius Garland can't really shoot the 3 ball. I don't know how many games I've seem him go 2 for 12 on threes, but it seems like it happens more often than not. If that's because he's being asked to be a spot up shooter at times, that's a real problem because both guards have to be able to share the ball and be excellent spot up shooters for the offense to work. 2). Garland is a poor defender. He just does not stop the ball. Guy is a matador out there, and will always be the weak spot. 3). Mitchell dominates the offense to the point where it's a one man team. That's bad for any offense not led by Michael Jordan or Lebron James. I'm not at all convinced Mitchell makes his teammates better. 4). Neither one of the "bigs" is really physical. And at least one of them has to be the play winning ball in the playoffs. 5). Mobley is not at all aggressive offensively, at least not consistently. Guy does not look for his shots, doesn't try to force the issue in the paint and instead passes out, and has not developed as a 3 point shooter which truly makes him unplayable with Allen especially in a playoff environment. To me, it looks like he doesn't have that dog in him. Ditto Garland and Allen. 6). LaVert is ludicrously inconsistent. 7). We don't have a viable small forward. What we have are a collection of second string guards filling in at that position. This description applies to LaVert, Struss, Okoro, and Niang. None of these guys can rebound, consistently defend the top tier wings AND be a consistent scoring threat, especially as a spot up 3 point shooter. I think we have to trade two of the "Core Four". Ideally, it would be Garland and Allen. But realistically, it's probably Mitchell and Allen. Which means building the team around Garland and Mobley. A fact which should give everyone cause for concern. And we definitely need a new coach. If you don't have a lot of big physical, older players, why aren't you running to create offense on fast breaks and transitions. Both of your guards are small, ditto your small forwards, and you bigs are not thick, so why aren't you using speed to beat the other guys down the court? Looks like a lot to fix, and maybe a fumbled opportunity to take a talented core and develop it. Not sure this team would not have been better with Markanen, Sexton, and all their draft picks--especially since Mitchell never wanted to come here in the first place. Plenty of blame to go around.

Kobe ottman is the one who took a chance on the two small guard offense. His job might be on the line also. What team wants a player making $ 40 million and played as poorly as DG did. J b did not handle darius garland very well. It was obvious to everyone including the players that the cavs suffered because of his play. If I Were a player on the team and knew that Garland and J b were both coming back, I would be depressed. Say what you want about Mobley. But when he and allen are in there together it's a big huge problem for the opponent's offense. I think if they both average fifteen a game that would be plenty. Many feel that ocoro Is the cavs best defender but At 6 foot 10 Dean Wade is more valuable. He can cover multiple positions And at 1 point in time this year he was rated the number one defender in the NBA. He also shoots 40% from the arc. They need to stop pulling him after he misses a couple shots. That's poor coaching. What a terrific defensive lineup With wade, Allen and mobley. Not many teams would score a hundred points. If the cavs Could get a dynamic scorer at the two position along with Mitchell it would be sweet With those 2 and the aforementioned defenders The cavs would be very Formidable at both ends of the court.

You literally said who the problem was and still found a way to blame JB, how is it JB fault that we lost in the playoffs but also not be the reason we made the playoffs? Nobody was hollering fire JB when Garland went down with a broke jaw and they won 18 games or whatever, soon as Garland come back they fell off. JB cant be the reason we lost and also not be the reason we got there, Cavs are 48-34 how come he dont get any credit for that with the roster given to him, but all the blame for losing? It dont work like that, cant have one without the other. Yall are literally saying anything just to join the convo. JB did what KS did for the browns WITHOUT A JOE FLACCO on the bench.

@@BatMane7.62 J b was responsible for playing garland more minutes than He should have. J b should have had garland coming off the bench And thus acknowledging that the two small guard offense wasn't working But he didn't.

Darius is garbage and could care less cuz he’s rich. Lazy and useless in the playoffs. Has zero killer instinct, passion, or knowledge of the game. Just there to collect a paycheck. He’s not a winner and never will be

NOOOO Donovan is here because of not sharing the ball. It's all about Donovan. No one can play hard if they are NOT being included. Hopefully Donovan is out and Mobley STAYS put as a SMALL FORWARD/PF and we get a Budenholzer
