@@rubemortenson1724 ya he was… he started using shortly after mall rats, up through dogma and chasing amy. When the two first became friends Kevin said Jason was extremely straight edge; no beer, nothing, but by the time of Clerks he was essentially playing himself; from the character lines to the drug and alcohol use. By the time Dogma came around he almost wasn’t in it because Kevin told him he couldn’t have him forgetting his lines or being so nervous that the other actors had to leave the set for him to be comfortable enough to do his scenes because, as Kevin put it, they would be “working with real actors”, referring to Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Chris Rock, and Alan Rickman, and told Jason he would only be allowed to keep his role if he committed to being sober, remembered all of his lines, and wasn’t too nervous to act out his scenes, which is why there’s the story about Jason memorizing the entire script, his characters lines and everyone elses, to show Kevin how he was serious about the role and not letting Kevin down, along with not wanting to “piss off that rickman dude” as jason put it. But when filming was done he would end up in a cycle of using, short times of sobriety, and back to using, with kevin helping him into rehab once and even ben affleck helping him into rehab once. He finally got sober after a few possession charges, a car accident where he nodded off and ran a stop light and hit an off duty police officer, and then a possession charge after being pulled over for driving with a deployed airbag causing a probation violation and Kevin canceling production of clerks 2, when he realized he had a problem that was now costing him his career (his substance abuse and an arrest warrant also being why Kevin didn’t cast him in Jersey Girl), a lifelong friendship, health problems that included losing teeth, noticeable track marks that covered his arms, losing 50lbs from smoking crack, and arrest warrants that would have him in jail if he attempted to go home to NJ, he decided to turn himself in and took a deal of 6 months in rehab, followed by probation, and jail time if he tried leaving rehab. But, as any recovering addict can tell you, it’s a daily battle staying sober and resisting urges, and after he was in an accident and was given a shot of Demerol, it gave him that opiate buzz and brought his mind back to craving that feeling and he relapsed and he continued to battle his addiction until becoming fully sober in 2010 which he’s maintained ever since.

I really wish that he got into all of this other stuff he talked about like Warhammer instead of heavy drugs. He'd probably still be that guy in clerks, but without drugs and with some hobbies that didn't almost ruin his life.

DJIsher1 I don't think he would be the same guy had he never started doing hard drugs. It may have almost ruined his life, but he's who he is now because of the drugs. If he never did drugs, we might not have the podcast he does with Kevin, the shows he's been on, the cartoon movie he made happen, or anything else you can tie to him. In a sordid way, it's a good thing he did heroine. He's changed for the better and has become an inspiration to other addicts.

Of course this is all theoretical. But I was just saying that we as an audience still would've had "Jay" to the jay and silent bob. Because of how Kevin Smith wrote Jay into his movies. Kevin wrote Jason in, not really making artifice about his character. But as it may be right now, because we can't turn back time and see. We have our Jay that we know and love. I was just suggesting that he'd still be a version of the Jay that we know, just a bit different - had he not taken drugs.

My "full post" was posted after I read yours sorry for the continuity of my post herein. But Kevin has mentioned that he does in fact like surrounding himself with good writing material, Mostly people he knows. I really think that kevin would have put him in more movies because everyone loved the Jay and Silent bob characters so much thathe wrote them into Mallrats. We all know that Mallrats is a cult classic and that, Jay and kev play a huge part in it. I'm just pointing out, that it might have not been much different, but only without the stories of the podcasts.

But! Let's celebrate the Mewes we have right now. I fuckin love Mewes' story and the way that Kev dealt with it. Instead of writing him of (as he did) The man has redeemed himself, we should be proud as fans and try to play "let us fuck" with him.
