JASON ARNOLD - SNAKE HANDLER

2 жыл бұрын

The last thing you need when you're running a guest house in South Africa, is to get an unwelcomed snake venturing inside the guest house. And when the snake turns out to be 8 foot worth of Africa's most dangerous snake (A Black Mamba), it's a situation that calls for immediate action - Calmly evacuating guests from the immediate area and calling in a professional snake handler to get it out safely.

Jason - you are awesome. I totally get that your grip is rock solid and the mamba’s can’t bite you but couldn’t your hand get tired for just a split second or anything like that? It just seems like you are taking a lot of risk holding it so long for one little wrong nudge and the mamba will snap on your finger in a split second. How does that not happen?

As a native of New York City, where even garter snakes have disappeared from the landscape, it's hard to imagine living in areas in which large venomous snakes could appear almost anywhere. A little research informs me that South Africa reports 10-12 deaths a year by venomous snake bites. While that's a dozen too many, it is surprisingly less than I imagined.

Hi Sirvan. They are very fast, but they usually use their speed to get away from a threat, rather than towards it. The antivenom we have is very effective at treating Mamba bites, especially if administered in the early stages of symptoms.

When we first moved to this house in rural Kenya it was quite bushy around. My daughter found a snake which looked like this in the bathroom and came and told me. I told her to keep away from it. I didn't even go to look but called my husband as I went to the kitchen unsure whether to jump on seat or run out of the door if it came my way! My husband grabbed a hockey stick and killed it. Then showed it to me. Much as venomous snakes scare me (am not bothered by non venomous ones but can't always tell the difference so cant take chances) I'm glad you were able to safely catch it and release it into the wild.

South africa is such a beautiful and deadly place all at the same time! I spend 6 years in northern California on a rattlesnake saturated 20 acres 😬 ive been away from there for almost 6 months and i still illuminate my steps at night inside and outside my house from force of habit! Lol...in nebraska now lol very thankful i dont have to deal with rattlers anymore!! Im curious what happens to these snakes in south africa after capture? In California majority of people kill them immediately :( we would capture and release in a safe place

Shame man. It's terrible to hear that the snakes are killed there. Everything I catch is safely released into natural habitats, where that species naturally occurs.

Hi) do you have an antivenom with you in case of emergency?
@jasonarnold-snakeman
@jasonarnold-snakeman 2 жыл бұрын
Hi. No I don't. It cannot be administered out of a hospital. It's possible to have a severe allergic reaction to the antivenom itself, and if you're not at a hospital and you have a severe reaction, it can kill you quicker than the snake bite itself. So I just either get to a hospital or get medical response to come to me

Are there a lot of bites inside homes?
@jasonarnold-snakeman
@jasonarnold-snakeman Жыл бұрын
Considering the amount of Mambas that end up in people's homes, the number of bites is EXTREMELY low. And those that get bitten were usually interfering with the snake.

She's my daughter and she knows the drill. She stays clear of my working area until I have the snake, then she's allowed to come close when I say she can. She knows not to get too close to the biting end of the snake. She's actually very good.

I do get what you're saying. But I probably exposed my daughter and myself to far greater potential risk of injury or death, just by traveling in our car on a public road to get to the house. We're constantly surrounded by the risk of injury or death so many times in our daily lives.
@t.s.4091
@t.s.4091 2 жыл бұрын
@@jasonarnold-snakeman you are probably true about that. However, those risks add up and one could argue about if minimizing risks is the better choice for kids. I am not talking about over-protection. Kids should be allowed to climb up trees and experience the abilities of and limits to their body, but a snake encounter has nothing to do with this.

She only came close once I had it safely restrained. I wouldn't allow her to be anywhere near me if I wasn't sure of myself. Trust me when I say I'd happily take the bite if something went wrong. I was fully in control and very aware of her and all possible dangers.

It's not the first time and won't be the last either. Where they live is prime habitat. And they keep rabbits, ducks, Guinea Pigs and birds on the property too, so the smell of "snake food" is a huge attractant.

Jean-Philippe Chippaux, an epidemiologist with the Institute of Research for Development in Cotonou, Benin, says that health reporting systems alone indicate that the incidence of envenoming by snakebites in Africa is about 315 000 per year, resulting in more than 7000 amputations and between 7000 and 32 000 deaths.

Crazy figures. I guess the bulk of those numbers are from the poorer African countries where medical help is either lacking or many many miles away. In these countries the local people also rely on traditional medicines to treat snake bites, and these medicines do not work. 🤦🏻‍♂️🙈
