One tip for plastic kits, use Tamiya extra thin plastic glue instead of the tube testors stuff. It's much more effective and wicks into joints due to its low surface tension. PVA glue like Microscale Micro Krystal Klear is an ideal choice for clear parts as you won't have any fogging or warping, and is what I always use for things like aircraft canopies.

Hi ya Jason. Just like painting a real building, it’s all about the prep work. You did a wonderful job on the brick work. And the eventual wash work on the gray areas really made the difference. Although, like you said, it’s an easy kit. But it’s all the detail work and painting that takes the time. The “ glass “ certainly had a lot of issues. The lack of helpful instructions is kind of frustrating. But like a lot of comments, Walthers kits have many issues. Thanks for all the great tips and techniques. It certainly looks great on the layout. See ya next time.

Interesting viewing, thanks for letting us see your techniques. I often use a different technique on bricks, starting with a grey / taupe base, then drybrushing heavily with burnt umber, burnt sienna and red oxide to give the bricks colour but leave the mortar courses untouched. Next time I do something with bricks, I’ll give the late stage mortar wash a try instead.

Jason, you did an amazing job making this simple plastic kit look terrific. However, I have one bone to pick before you finish off the roof. A building of this size would certainly have a couple of elevators. What you really need to complete this model is an elevator equipment building on the roof. I'm sort of surprised that Walthers didn't include this detail, to be honest. ITLA has a new kit out that would be perfect for this. And I think some fire escapes would certainly make this build even more amazing. Thanks for this new video!

Excellent video as always, now I'm waiting for part two. I shared this on my Facebook page as it really shows some excellent techniques. The other detail you might consider is a roof mounted water tower. Most older buildings had them for water storage for the building before modern pumps were available. They would fill the tank and gravity feed the water to lower floors, it helped keep water pressure even as the older water systems couldn't maintain pressure to the upper floors. There's a few good articles online of the history of roof mounted water tanks.

Nice job, Jason. You know, I was looking at that model and something was bothering me about it, and then I realised what it was. Instead of that plain, flat roof, a building of that size would have an elevator, and there is no housing on the roof for the elevator motor and machinery. A model maker of your calibre should have no problem making something that suits 🙂

Thank you so much Rafe!!! I truly appreciate your continued support! I keep the lighting in my layout room very bright to show off all of the details. I don’t do any lighting on the structures themselves because I don’t want to dime the room lights to see lights on or in the buildings. I spend hours, weeks and months detailing my models and I want to see it and I want people viewing my layout to see it. I have no interest in looking at little lights. Just my opinion. I know plenty of modelers that love lighting structures . Thanks for watching!!!

Nice build. I guess as a half-relief background building, Walthers don't put too much detail on the roof, and no back wall, to keep the costs down. I've not checked their website, but I wonder if they make a version with a back wall too for foreground models, although you could also put two of those kits back to back and end up with a really impressive building if you have the space: that would cry out for a fully detailed lobby interior. - imagine being able to look through the big ground floor windows and see the elevators and such like! Although I'm a European and UK modeller, I do like some of the Walthers kits, as they have a real size and presence that kits from European firms like often Faller don't have.

The build was cool, I agree you need elevator sheds for the roof. I do have a question why use a rattle can of dull coat? Testors makes a bottle of dull coat , yes you have to add 50/50 with their lacquer thinner to use an air brush but the results are better. Stair stepping your scenery always adds depth, also shows off the details of the building at each step up. Great job! my layout is calling, till next time.

By speckling, were you talking about the spackle? Or the technique he used to paint using the sponges? If you're talking about the painting technique with the sponges, that was to give it a feel of different colored bricks. And the spackle was used to represent the mortar between the bricks.
