I'm in the process of moving out this way now. I've been out on the lake recently a few times but like others, I have all kinds of misconceptions about "where these Walleyes ought to be." I've been trolling similar baits and caught fish, but I've never even considered trolling anything less than 10-12 feet of water in Devils Lake. I'll have to look around for some new spots, I've lost a few lures already from trees/brush that can't be seen underwater even in these depths. I can't hardly imagine not getting hung up even shallower! Anyway, thanks for the tips Jason- I'll try em my next time out. I'm the crazy guy out in the Hobie kayak- a lot more stable than people think it is- even in the wind. On an average day fishing I'm paddling some 6-8 hours so I'm not afraid to get on out there. Thanks again for the many Devils Lake specific vids- it's amazing just how diverse this fishery is, from the vast size and various structure options. Maybe if I live another 20 years I'll have around a 1000th of your expertise around these parts.

Old arial photos will help you see where the trees once were. Many of these shallow bowls and troughs we troll today were once small sloughs. Send us a DM and we can send you over some areas that would be excellent with a kayak.

Love fishing this way! Got some nice ones on Leech this weekend. Trolling 10-12ft at night using the same set up. Scheels Okuma line counters with 10# fireline and the precision trolling app.

Hey Jason, I know you guys probably see lots of gadgets. I can't tell what rod holders you have but Scotty makes a disc called "Scotty Slip Disc" that allows you to micro adjust your holders. I have some they work great.

What speed do you like to troll and what rod length recommended
@JasonMitchellOutdoors
@JasonMitchellOutdoors 2 жыл бұрын
I usually start out around 2 mph. I like four to six foot rods on the inside and 8 1/2 or 10 1/2 on outside

Nvm I see that you’d said 20ft. That’s crazy. I would have thought it would be a lot more line then that

I am very new to walleye fishing and trying to learn as much as I can. Maybe I have a misconception by thinking that walleyes prefer to be in deep cooler water. Does Devil's Lake have deep spots and if so, would you expect to find the walleyes there once the surface temp hits 80F or above?
@JasonMitchellOutdoors
@JasonMitchellOutdoors 3 жыл бұрын
There are walleye on some deep spots but find fish shallow all summer around weeds. Some fish do go deep in summer but there are more fish that stay shallow than what many people would believe
