Magician reacts to Wes Iseli 2020 performing magic tricks with heads or tails coin flipping for Penn and Teller on their show Penn & Teller Fool Us 2020. Wes Iseli is an American magician, and here he involves the whole audience in making guesses about heads or tails while flipping a coin, and somehow shows with a prediction that either he knows the future... or he's really good at flipping coins! ;-) Will he fool Penn & Teller and become a fooler winner? This light stand is kinda not sturdy enough because the light and soft box are so large; the whole thing can tip over easily. But it's what I use! 😆 Or you can perhaps find another light stand that is rated to hold more weight. Or just put something heavy (like sandbags) onto the bottom to lower the center of gravity.

You can flip a coin without it flipping. You can control how many times a coin will flip in the air, such as 3 times. It looked like it was spinning fast enough and enough times to be difficult to reliably count the rotations. Maybe a large enough, physically distinguishable enough coin, can easily be felt to know the side. I know if you were to feel both sides of a quarter you could easily tell which side is heads, but not sure if you could do it discreetly.

Looks like he picked an audience member before the start, and as you mentioned, slight of handed the results to always have that one guy win. Still a good trick.

I think he saw the guy before the show started and he wrote the prediction. He kept his eyes on the guy the whole time even though it looked like he’s looking everywhere. Simply feeling the coin can create that affect. Penn mentioned feeling the coin is not what he did but what if that really is how he did it (looking at his face after). Sometimes Penn says multiple methods to the magician. I feel like he couldve done that here.

@@FusionDeveloper He knows which side he needs to be facing up before he slaps it on the back of his hand. The trick is to throw the coin in the air, catch it, and put it down on the correct side. That just takes a lot of practice. I'm sure he could do it with any half dollar. I bet he couldn't do it with a dime. He gave the trick away when he told Penn, "You're gonna get it wrong." Penn accepted defeat when he guessed wrong with the "gaffed coin." He was just having fun with it after that.

Friend of Wes here, regarding your question about the grand prize. According to Wes it was a bottle of Dom Pérignon. It was provided by the studio and subsequently cut during editing.

Moreover, he placed his hands in him pocket when Penn mentioned the coin which is a standard body language sign of insecurity and protection of the coin. Also, every magician who doesn't have something to hide gives them the object in question for inspection.

You are exactly correct, Yandri. As others have pointed out, I agree he did NOT feel the coin but rather is able to control the flip. You can "flip" a coin causing it to wiggle but not turn over . THIS IS JUGGLING!!! And that is precisely WHY Penn was so impressed as to give this guy a chance to prove his skill at the end, because this is the kind of act they want to feature later on. The wife and daughter made it just that more irresistible. Beautiful performance.

@@johnjamesbaldridge867 The other issue with the idea that he's controlling it, is that he's asking people to make their choice AFTER he throws. That's what rules out the wiggle throw. Even at the end with Penn, Penn's arm goes up after Wes catches. The only way the wiggle throw works is you have to prep it, knowing the outcome you want before the throw. Now you could use the wiggle to "load" the result, and then knowing which side is up, flip if it needed, but that's not the "best" way. Half dollars are actually fairly easy to tell which side is which by touch.

@@johnjamesbaldridge867 No, he didn't control the flip. He needed to know how his target audience member voted after he'd already flipped the coin. It's why he looks out into the audience after he's caught the coin. At that point he can control which side is face up when he flips it onto his hand. He is feeling the coin in his hand. This actually doesn't require a super sensitive sense of feel, or a lot of practice. It's a pretty old technique. Grab a quarter, for example, and rub your thumb once over the heads side, and then try it on the tails side. You will notice the heads side has a smoother feel to it than the tails side. This difference is much more pronounced on a half dollar, to the point it's difficult not to feel the difference.

He had a view of the audience from behind the curtains. Picked out this particular person, and wrote the prediction. Then came out on stage and gave the note to Alyson. He has extreme sensitivity of the side of the coin, and always managed to "turn it" (sleight of hand, within his hand to control the outcome) to match the predicted audience member. When there were two, he tells them they must be different, this ensures he is "the last man standing". In my never to be humbled opinion. Very impressive performance, concise, and included the audience completely.

I'm more impressed by how incredible clean and thus invisible the rotation of the coin in his hand is than with being able to feel the correct side.

You do not need to rotate the coin in your hand. You flip the coin to the correct side as you open your hand. Either you let the coin follow your fingers out which effectively flips it or you leave the coin in your palm which does not.

You can learn to throw the coin with a certain number of turns (2 is enough, 3 is even better and still doable) so it lands in your hand the way you want it. This way you don't have to feel the sides.

@@MarkNiceyard you could go to all that effort... Or you could use the built in design of a coin to do the trick without having to do any practice. I've been doing this trick since school and it works with almost every coin I've come across. Only time I've had an issue is if both sides are too similar.

Just tried this with a quarter, it's ridiculously easy to pull off. After throwing the quarter up, I catch it and place it over the tip of my ring finger while making a fist. I can easily feel the difference between the smooth heads side and rougher tails. Tried with this 5 different types of quarters and super easy to know when you finger runs over the heads side. Some newer quarters with a rough tails side work a bit better than the standard eagle. Probably even easier with a half dollar. You don't even need to manipulate the coin while it's in your hand. You only flip the coin if necessary when revealing if it's heads or tales. In the video you can see him pointing around at the audience after he catches the quarter. That gives him ample time to rub his finger on the surface and know which side the coin is. Try it out, hold a quarter in your hand while making a fist and rub your ring finger over either side. It's so simple. I tried 30 flips in a row, and was able to flip the side I wanted.

Yup, I have a half-dollar coin and was able to replicate this trick with ease after getting a good "feel" for it. I immediately thought of this as well, I tried a dollar coin, silver dollar, and half-dollar, and what was really nice was the half-dollar coin was the easiest to use a combined middle and ring finger to "feel" out the smoother heads and the rougher tails. It does take a little bit of training, but it is surprisingly simple and easy once you get used to it. What's odd is that I immediately thought of this based on what I knew of the half-dollar's design as he spoke of it. I suspect that maybe either Penn and Teller knew this was possible and just made up the gaff guess because they wanted him to win for having such a good trick design, or maybe they didn't know just how unique the printing of the half-dollar was. For its numismatics, the half-dollar is known to be one of the more well-defined coins ever minted. When they fist printed the original 1964 version, Jacqueline Kennedy took issue with how well the hair was defined, so they quickly modified it and most half-dollars after that first printing have a very smooth "heads" side because of this. It's very noticeable, but if P&T weren't privy to this info, they might not have known.

I think Penn knew this. They were probably torn between either a Gaff coin or controlling it (although idk why they would lean towards the former), and so when Wes said it wasn't Gaff, Penn's charade was his way of letting Wes know that they know how it's done.

I've never seen this performance until your video. I really loved his performance in a very different way than Shin or DK...What a stand up, family based guy. Loved seeing how excited his wife was when she realized he was going to fool them. Also, this is the best ending to any performance what he did with Penn. Just awesome.

I've seen Wes Iseli perform many times at a local street festival here in his native Virginia over the years, and his show is always different and never ceases to amaze. He can do amazing slight of hand tricks wearing a short sleeved shirt and surrounded by an audience on three sides, all of whom are looking closely at everything he's doing. He also has some neat tricks with animals too, changing a dove into a rabbit or making them disappear altogether. Wes is a class act with a beautiful family!

I agree with you, and if we're right it would be so beautifully simple. A guy with a trick coin and a disguised assistant and a couple of clever machines behind a table can be just as astonishing to watch, but believing that it's just a skilled guy with a (perhaps mostly) normal coin just adds a layer of satisfaction to the routine.

I saw this on the show and immediately thought he was manipulating the coin after it lands. He picked out one guy from the audience and just had the result be whatever that guy chose until he won. Then Penn thought he was doing something else so tried to beat him.....OF COURSE Iseli won! Somehow he was changing the result after the flip. {Edited} I wrote that before watching the video. Funny you thought the exact same thing. Funnier that Penn & Teller assumed it must be something more technical.

I think Penn knew he was fooled at that point. He did the coin-flip "bet" just to let the magician know that he figured it out on his second guess. His fist guess was wrong, so it was still a fool.

@@PhilBagels That seems likely. I thought it was weird that he went for a 2nd bite since they don't do that anymore. Then he stood up like a gunslinger which was probably more of an act for the camera than a serious attempt. Maybe he and Teller figured that was his likely technique and he had Teller watch him to confirm. He did say he really loved that trick and the whole idea of the audience participation.

I completely agree but still don´t know how he can feel the coin and flip the coin once it landed. He also says it is not a gaff coin. To my understanding, that means that the coin is a normal coin. If he slightly changes the coin (a hook, a point, magnetism), it is a gaff. Feeling the tails or the heads is a remarkable skill.

@@wimpow It seems like it is, but try it yourself and most likely you will find it extremely easy, like I did. After 5 miutes I was able to control the coin pretty much every time and I never ever did any magic, sleight of hand or feel or anything. Also my coin was way smaller, thinner and both sides were similar. That's first magic trick I learned and I love this guy for it :D

I think I know how he did it. Before his act started he looked at the guests and picked one, quickly writing the prediction matching his appearance. When act started, looking at the chosen person and his choices he manipulated the coin by feeling it (coin stayed in his hand for a very long time after each flip while he was pointing at audience) until only his chosen one was standing.

Or imagine his chosen guest messing up what he chose and sitting down thinking he chose it wrong. Or maybe even not willing to play along or have a knee/foot problem that he would rather not stand up and participate.

Well first of all, the chosen person is probably an accomplice. Only with an accomplice would you be sure that your subject would not bail on you. Secondly, the suggested method of picking an audience member in advance, then controlling the coin and therefor the outcome, eliminates the possibility of the last two persons both chosing the wrong side. Because whenever they would chose the same side, the performer would manipulate the coin to show that particular side, so that neither contestant would be eliminated and the procedure could continue. Where as in the other circumstance, both persons would be eliminated and the game would be over without a winner.

A long time ago I read an old book and I know there’s an old bar keepers trick where they simply develop the skill to either flip the coin heads or tails or the feeling it method. Here it would be feeling it because he waits until he looks at the hands to decide what it’s going to be. You do this enough you can tell by feel.

Surprised they were fooled by this, i'm no magician, but i've been able to do exactly what you suggested, where you feel the coin with you're hand and choose which side you put face up as you place the coin on the back of your hand. That's why he got pen to call it before placing it on his hand

There are different ways to select the outcome of the flip. A gaffed coin would probably be the easiest and most reliable way to do this. So Penn and Teller went with that, they were wrong. Remember, Penn and Teller aren’t there to guess all the various possible ways to perform a trick to prove their superiority but to make an entertaining show. So they usually take one or two guesses and give up.

I practiced something that looked identical to this as a kid/teenager, I'd flip it so that when I had to look to catch it I already knew which way up it was and then the reveal was how I'd pick which side showed. I got so fast at it that no one seemed to notice that I was just looking at the answer, it was concealed behind "making sure I catch it". Been years since I did that.

This trick reminds me of the time when Kostya Kimlat trained long enough to catch any card he wanted from out of the air. I think Wes Iseli trained really hard to be able to flip the coin to either side he wanted.

Nice ep and even more thought provoking fable I can relate to a lot of this especially becuass my father is having a bout with Parkinson's right now. 9+ years ago I figured out how to flip a quarter and be able to "blindly" know which side was which in my hand and manipulate it. No gimmick is needed heads side is smooth and tails is rougher. State quarters are even easier because the texture is more rough on tails side. Once you flip it you can feel and manipulate the quarter and decide which side you want up very quickly.

@@brad9548 it's slight but enough to tell the difference. I clinch my hand into a fist and slide a finger just enough to feel the texture. If you point like in this video it makes it more difficult to see the hand muscles contracting and can move the pinky quite a bit before the top side of your hand shows sign you're moving a finger

Sometimes Penn and Teller aren't actually fooled ... sometimes they see a good act they enjoy and would love to have then open for them one day. Richard Turner episode as well ... they absolutely know what he was doing, but you dont say no to richard turner ... and him opening for you for essentially the price of a hotel room is pretty cool.

Having been to a Penn and Teller Show, I can tell you that they aren't the opener. They preform close to the end, but not the final. At least that's when the fooler perform when I was there in September.

Yea i agree with this comment... If theres a sob story... Or a friend that shows up... They are fooled... Its not a perfect judgement but at least ita an entertaining show... So i dont nit pick about this like its the Supreme Court... I just enjoy the showmanship of it... After all... Its just a television show.... PS Richard Turner deserves his due... He gave the answer how is was done on the end. He sayd to Teller that he will lose. So he could choose after Teller what is on top. And so there is only one way to do it. Great idea!! Can I use for my shows to choose a person I need.

I think that he had a look at the audience in advance to pick the winner for his prediction, because you see him look in the same direction every time when the audience make their prediction, and that he can feel whether it's heads or tails and that way control the outcome was also my idea

You can see him catch the coin in such a way that he can touch it with the tips of his fingers. At that point you can distinguish the faces of any large coin by touch. You then simply control it when you smack it on the back of your hand.

I saw the video on his KZfaq channel the other day and commented the same thing you said. I feel he was able to control which side came up which (to me) is obvious by him telling Penn he was going to get it wrong. Just how he was able to tell the difference could be up for speculation and your suggestions were the same thing that came to my mind. Regardless though, I thought it was a great trick.

He did this trick with a half dollar coin, and specifically he mentioned it was the variety with an eagle on the back. If you get one of these coins, it is actually much smoother on the heads side than the tails side. It is actually very easy by feel to determine which side is heads, and since he holds it in his hand for several seconds, it would be very easy to manipulate the coin. My question is if that explanation is included in Penn's suggestion that he had a "glimpse" of the coin. Does feeling the coin count as a glimpse? Apparently not, in the opinion of both the magician and the judges.

Many years ago I practiced coin flipping. I was able to learn how to flip it to the same side that was on the top before the flip. There is no need to double check by touch. He still had to reverse it as people called it while coin was in the air. I think that at 5:10 you can see that he is manipulating the coin.

i did this as a kid, heads and tails feel slightly different and there's a small move you can make when slamming the coin down that looks perfectly natural but lets the coin turn. It's quite easy. He even asked the audience to choose before slamming the coin down. He 100% did it that way. I'm guessing his idea was P&T wouldn't think that a children's trick would get on fool us and it worked

My take: He was in control of the outcome. After he saw whether the chosen person in the audience's hand was up or down he would force the outcome. The same with Penn at the end. How did he do it? I agree with you something identifiable on the coin could let him know how to make it land on his wrist. If the guy with the preset description only chose heads that would have been funny since Iseli would have to call all tails throughout the performance.

He specified it was a half dollar, I can say from experience determining a half dollar by feel after catching it on edge in the fold of your palm and then picking the side during the slap onto your arm takes about 30 minutes to master. Quarters are actually hard but Kennedy half dollars are very smooth on the the Kennedy head side and quite rough on the seal of the US side. The only hard part of this trick is thinking it up.

I thought the same. He feels the coin, then knows how to turn it head or tails on his hand. So he picked the winner before he started flipped the coin according to what the winner picked every time.

Scam school did a tutorial on this one last year. There is a way of throwing a coin up without it flipping, it looks really convincing even up close. He just needs to flip the coin in his hand when he knows what mr leather jacket chose. Notice he only puts it on Alison's hand after the pick.

This works with almost any coin. When I was young I did a variant of this in school. Would throw the coin catch it on my hand and immediately put my other hand flat on top of it. Then classmates made their guess. I could feel which side of the coin was facing down. All I did during the guesses was lower my hands. Bring them back up with the coin flipped to the side I wanted to show. The kids, nor teachers, ever noticed that sometimes my thumbs started facing to the left but when my hands came back up were facing to the right. Obviously Wes is using a much more sophisticated method to control the coin then 8 year old me but I'm sure he's controlling the coin to get the outcome he wanted.

My wife and I went to their show last week and they performed that trick. I was one of 3 left standing. The winner went up to the stage where they revealed a picture of her drawn with magic markers. They both signed it and gave it to her. After the show my wife and I went to get an Uber and met the winner with her husband as they took pictures before they got into their ride.

I think you are completely right. Notice how when it was down to 2 he said "Don't pick the same thing." I don't usually like tricks with a very specific prediction because it typically gives away how it's done and it often reveals there isn't near as much skill involved (I'm a sleight of hand fan). This one is different, though, because it's fun and very clever and obviously requires a skill to perform and it could go SO wrong.

ez, as he catches the coin, he point to the audience, he uses his middle finger to feel the coin, in the movement to the hand he flips it to his preferred side, making sure that his prediction keeps standing. I practiced it a bit, and it's easy to recognise the sides. after just a couple of tries. some coins work better than others.

I once saw Wes Iseli and family do their act live. I did lose at the coin toss effect. But there are somethings I noticed in this video presentation I did not, could not, would not notice live. BUT it all depends on the definition of A GAFFED COIN. Iseli always used his right hand for the toss and retrive. Iseli wears two rings on his right hand. An ornate onyx ring on his pinky and a band on his ring finger. Thank you Denny Rosenblatt for catching that on camera. So could one of the rings be magnetic. Here's why, There is no doubt that the audience stooge was preselected. Not only is he a Director's dream subject. But his looks are so defined and easy to differentiate from the others. HOWEVER, one of the rules of the game portion of the show is the artist can have NO PRE-SHOW SET UP. So Iseli would not be allowed to peruse the audience que to pick the stooge. But his wife could. Also the stooge was the only one of the final group to be sitting in a quick grab shot for the cameras. On the "aisle", with no need to climb over any other audience member. And there I think is the force. The wife pass the info to Iseli who is the pick. Back stage before his spot he writes down his forced prediction. Now to the gaffed coin. Is a coin that is naturally magnetized on one side and not on the other gaffed? IF SO, Iseli does a legit flip. He has the audience make their call while the coin is in the air. Paying attention to the stooge's choice. Remember during the flip and retrieve he is constantly scanning the audience for a show of hands. In fact in the Jillette one on one flip Iseli lost control of the flip and throw it out in front of himself. He had only one stooge at that time to play with. Carny trash Penn Jillette. So to the reveal. Iseli catches the coin, on a ring held magnet, and waits for the stooge's call. If Iselli wants the stooge to win and the winning side is magnetically attached to his hand. He would know to backhand the coin, part his fingers, and release the coin. But if Iseli confidently declares "Your going to lose." and the stooge calls the same coins position as in his right hand Iseli does a finger roll. Flipping the coin, off the magnet, as he is about to back hand the coin. Stooge loses. To me the sole question is, "What is is," a GAFFED COIN? Great episode Jason. As for Aesop, I'm not telling anyone anything as what to do. ~Jim

@Shannon Robson Absolutely correct. What my question was based on was if Iseli used a coin which is naturally charged magnetic on one side and base on the other is that gaffed? Did the mint mix the alloys to be polarized? I have a few in my own Magic Hat. And I feel confident he did not rig the coin himself. But your correct that a gaffed coin is rigged. ~Jim

You shouldn't call it a stooge. A stooge is someone who is in on the trick acting like a stranger. This audience member was not in the loop, but pre selected by the magician so he could manipulate the coin to be whatever the audience member was doing. This also is not pre-show stuff. Because what they mean by that (as they stated in multiple podcasts), is mainly used for mentalists, who would try to find out information about a person in the audience before the show so they can have impossible predictions. In this case it's perfectly fine to just look into the audience and pick someone you want to win and write a prediction for that.

Coin-trick reminds me of how the elections in some US state were decided. He could have trained to get a perfect throw each time. I would use a magnet or a gimmick coin that can change with an internal mechanic.

His wife scouted someone in the theater and texted him the articles of clothing what the person is wearing physical description & approximate seat location, he then writes the prediction down back stage. He uses a trained sense of touch to feel the groove on each side to indicate if it’s heads or tails and then switches midair during the movement towards the slap on top of his wrist to insure the person that his wife selected wins in the end.

Brian Brushwood has a KZfaq video showing a method of controlling a coin. The coin doesn’t actually flip but just wobbles in the air which makes it appear to flip.
