If you press record on the video and audio then tap your strings four times you get 4 little spikes in the waveform. Just zoom in a bit on your video editor and drag one along thill they align. No messing about to see if you got it right. Zoom in to the smallest increment and you cant go wrong. You can buy me a beer! ;-)

I've heard that doing a pick scrape or some random (but loud) percussive sound in the beginning of the recording helps serve as a marker for where to sync the audio and the video! Super helpful, man. This was great.

If anyone is struggling to sync their beginnings because of the visual sound wall of metal they play (the audio track), you can also play one fast-attack test note or chord, to use as the 'clapper board'. Leave 1-2 seconds and start your riff normally. It will visually look somewhat easier to sync, you get like a spike on the visualisation of the audio. 👍
@jasonstallworth2 жыл бұрын
Definitely a good idea to get that initial spike to line up the audio and video. I just look for where the wave starts though because there's silence before that. And the waves in the audio and video will often look the same.
@metalfreak93863 ай бұрын

Try this if you want to play quietly. Since you are going to cut the beginning of the video anyway, start with your monitors on, play just one or two clean notes to make a spike in the waveform to sync to, then you can turn off your monitors for the rest of your playing. Once you are in sync you can trim off those extra notes. It's nice if the camera can see your pick hitting the string, too.
@jasonstallworth6 ай бұрын
Yeah the pick hitting does help line it up!

Great video. I'm really new to this and just bought a Focusrite Scarlett Solo and trying to make videos of me playing bass guitar to songs. I think I get the process you described here. My issues is if Im using headphones is the process the same for syncing the audio and video, because I can't hear the audio in the video section when I sync it to the audio file. I have some A5+ speakers but I don't want to use them as studio monitors, its a pain to switch them around (and Im afraid to damage them with the bass) I wish I could use my bass amp as a studio speaker, but not sure if I can or how. I may end up investing into some studio speakers (I don't like clutter) Im sure that would solve the issue.. but any tips in the meantime.
@jasonstallworth6 ай бұрын
I definitely encourage you to get studio monitors but for now, just do like a 1-2-3 pick partner or something so that you have that motion to align with the audio

Ah man, thank you for this, exactly what I was looking for! Kind of amazing you dropped it right in without having to muck with it, but one tip for that I've seen -- slap your hands together just before starting to play. Eh, who knows, it might be just as tough to sync that. Also, fantastic tip on boosting the level first, that always causes trouble for me. OK so one question -- do you turn up the level on your audio interface past the point of clipping, or how did you know how much to boost? It looked like your guitar recording was clipping in the DAW (I also use Studio One), but I never heard any clipping sounds. Great video, and I LOVE that guitar tone.
@jasonstallworth3 жыл бұрын
I just keep my DAW at the normal level I have it at when recording. But I do crank the volume going to my monitors so that way the camera picks it up well, which makes syncing much easier (I don't have to clap) Oh, I'm also letting everyone know about my new metal rhythm guitar course here.
