I am a pure blood Mennonite with ancestry traced to 1714. My grandparents grew up this way. My parents less so and myself even less. The greatest gift my family and community gave me was Love.

There are differnt Mennonite groups in my area....I knew Mennonites who were like a regular church, then others who dressed more traditionally but live like most people...then there are the hard core old school Mennonites....and Hutterites, who all live in colonies and farm and run communal businesses like making steel roofing. They are honest and hardworking....and scrupulously honest.....somehting I have not found in my few dealings with the local less traditional Mennonites. I am curious though about the bible passage that say no to electronic technology....never seen such a thing myself.

that's great. I love driving by the Amish, seeing the little kids out there working at the stands or helping their parents work outside, makes me wish we had more of that now-a-days with all people. I have a Canadian friend who married a Mennonite lady, shes a super great cook, and all around great person.

I heard a bit of German when I was a baby and very young from neighbors we had. I think it's High German or Modern German. It was weird learning so many words I didn't know i until I heard them as an adult. My family spent every Christmas with then for many years and the oldest Oma and Opa spoke English with a heavy accent.

they are like the German Russians who returned to Germany and immigrated. It hasn't evolved at all and would be very frowned upon now like old German Russian families that returned to Germany instead of immigrating after WW2 as they had no home to return to. The german they spoke was the german of the late 1880's probably, they had no influence to evolve the language unlike Germans of Germany.

It's actually Low German. For several years I worked in police department that had a Mennonite police chief. Strange situation as he didn't carry a gun but he had a shotgun at home. He occasionally would talk on the phone in their low German dialect and he was surprised when I understood him. He did drive a patrol car but he rarely stopped anyone. The rare times he did you knew they were getting a citation 😮 He was definitely different to deal with.

They view their animals as machines or products that make them money. They’ve done well to create a facade that most people find admirable for some reason. That, from what little I know, is not your typical mennonite. They would normally shun outsiders and their world because it goes against the teachings of their Bible. I'm pretty sure buying planes goes against every fibre of their lives. Trucks, yes, I can understand the need for them, much the same as tractors and the like. We dressed like other people do and I went to various schools,but spent 4 years at a private Mennonite school. After that I attended a Bible college and worked in a telephone office. Sometimes my work helped save a life. My brothers in law have their own planes because they are wealthy. However the youngest is a missionary pilot in Indonesia, We don’t ban anything. We just know the difference between right and wrong. Modern things are not a sin. ‼️It is what you do with them that matters. ‼️I do not drive my car fast because I don’t want an accident. We have a computer and TV but do not watch immoral programs. We have a lot of Mennonites from eastern Pennsylvania who do not want much to do with us because we don’t agree with all their rules. I have never worn a head covering or long dresses and my husband would find it strange if I did. I grew up in a German church but very few here in Canada use that language anymore because it is not practical. I can read and write and still speak some high German and understand some low German as that is what my grandparents spoke.My grandparents actually came from Ukraine 100 years ago. Many Mennonites were invited by Queen Katherine the great to come and farm there but they lost everything due to the Communist revolution. They began a new life in Canada as refugees and were hard working and successful. They were progressive and very much valued education whereas those called old colony Mennonites who came to Canada around 1875 did not, nor did they want to learn English. So they moved to Mexico and endured much hardship and poverty. Some came back to Canada and with the help of other Mennonites eventually became more modern. My grandfather Abram Wiens was very involved with those coming back and other Mennonite refugees arriving from Germany, Paraguay, and a few other places and I heard many stories about the leaders who led Mennonites out of Ukraine into Canada. We have a book written by my husbands grandfather called At the gates of Moscow about the journey. Iam sad these people think they must live so primitively in order to enter heaven. Man made rules are not helpful. The only way to enter Heaven is to recognize we are sinful and in need of a Saviour. IF we ask him to forgive us he is gracious and do so. We need to live a purposeful life, read and study the Bible, but we DO NOT need 100 rules. Obeying rules and being good or making our families live in poverty and medical and educational and social ignorance is not what the Lord expects of us. If He did we should still be living like they did at the time of Jesus birth! That would not be practical either. Can you imagine Mennonite farmers in flowing robes and sandals??? Salvation does NOT depend on wether I have fire insurance or if I speak Plautdietsch . It is not spelled Plot deetch either. It does not matter if I have health insurance so that I can get medical help. It does not matter if my children get educated. My husbands uncle was a doctor who served God in various countries. We think that’s wonderful to serve your fellowman. We grow grain to feed the hungry. Iam very disappointed in people that are portrayed in this video. In fact it’s very very backward and sad. A phone is a NECESSITY as is health insurance and a vehicle. Iam so sorry for these women who have to obey every whim of their husbands. Moving to the jungles is just stupid.

Where do you live?? I’m in northern Canada. I was born Mennonite and I like watermelon, farmer sausage and roll Kuchen. ( kind of like fritters that are boiled in hot oil).😃 That’s a favorite Mennonite meal.I’m a 75 year old gramma and have lived on farms all my life. I speak German and can read my grammas Gothic print Bible. My mom was a teacher for a while. I attended a private Mennonite school in Abbotsford BC Canada. That school now has over 1000 students. My husband grew up on a farm which had a lake and was only 2 miles from the airport so they landed all the float planes there. In return my husband and his 4 brothers got free flying lessons. The youngest one became a missionary pilot in Indonesia. Two others had their own planes. One used his on a farm 100 miles from town. We never had one because they are very expensive and didn’t need one.l know very few Mennonite farmers that have planes so am curious where you live. Obviously not in some ridiculous jungle. Ahhhh maybe Pennsylvania?? We have many Eastern Pennsylvania Mennonites that have moved here. Some off shoot of the Amish. They have a100 rules such as dress codes, no red allowed, no musical instruments, head coverings, no fire insurance and the sad list goes on. They think they must do all these things besides accept Jesus Christ into their lives in order to get into heaven. We are much much more relaxed as you say. They don’t even allow the girls to have high school education whereas my own mom was a teacher. My husbands uncle was a doctor. I want to clarify that Plautdietsch and low German ARE the same. Even Plautdietsch is spoken differently in Belize than in Canada. They use a lot of en at the end of words. They came from Canada in the 1930’s or so because they refused to let their children go to public school or speak English. They were quarrelsome with a few Canadian rules so moved to Mexico and later to Belize to get away from government. They have many rules which they think qualifies them to get into heaven. That’s so sad because the only way to get to heaven is by admitting to Jesus that you have sinned and need his forgiveness. To grow in the Christian life it is important to read and study the Bible. I could write all night about Mennonites but I have all ready explained a lot in my other comments if you care to read them. Glad you have a good Mennonite boss. Give him greetings from our grain farm out west. Tell him gently he doesn’t need so many rules.😊

We went to Pennsylvania about 10 years ago and were fascinated. We had the pleasure of being invited to an Amish home one day and they explained they would soon be adding on a Doedy house to retire in. It’s like a suite attached to their former house which a son and his young family will move into. I like the idea but it wouldn’t be possible in a city because of regulations. And,,,,,now a days with women working how can they care for elderly parents?

Certainly everyone eventually becomes old and most will eventually need care/support of one sort or another when they become less able to take care for themselves. One thing that I think is worth mentioning though, is that I believe that when an elderly person is respected and finds meaning in their existence by feeling productive (as in helping to raise children for example), and being loved or whatever it is that enhances the sense of honor and self esteem, it can well delay the point where they will be needing support from others due to being inhibited by age and poor health. Loneliness and isolation is not something that promotes good health.

The elderly are overrated. Look at the state of congress. Both wings.this admin and the last are old enough to remember the fucking jfk assassination so fuck outta here with that.

Yes, there is a certain appeal to this kind of life, but not everyone who lives it is happy. Some people I know left this kind of Mennonite sect because things were not as they seemed to the outside. I don't know about this particular group, and it's certainly not so in all of these groups, but in some of them, there's a high degree of abuse. Having said this, there are some groups in which things are really good and people are truly happy. I truly hope that you find what you're looking for and that you get peace wherever you are and where you end up. :)

Might want to invest in what isn't told often... The Manifesto of Catherine the Great & her grandson. That is by far a lot larger group of people than this. German Russians, especially Roman Catholic came to Russia from German speaking EU for land and a better life. This is nothing compared to what happened to them.

I am german native and I hardly understand some words. But I can understand why they live a life like that, why their youth is strugling and kind of rebelling, thats normal in all societys.

These guys are Old Colony Mennonites, numbering anywhere from 350 000 to 450 000. Small in North America, but found in 8 or 9 Central and South American countries where they number 10's of thousands.

@tommyapocalypse6096 - Thank You! I've seen some documentaries on similar communities, i.e. the Amish, and the people chronicled in video and conversation are impressive. In very positive ways and IMHO very negative ways. The strengths sell themselves: division of labor / serious work ethic / DIY lifestyle / communal support from cradle-to-grave / healthy living condition / admirable stewardship of resources / land / pro-family. Yet...and this is a big yet, and it was only in the communities recorded ( can't it's true of ALL of the Amish ), they had an Us vs Them mindset towards anyone ( yes, Christians, too ) who were outside their communities as The Lost or those of The System of Satan. That's ultimately sad, but a bit angering as well. I don't have to agree with everything very traditional Christian communities do and believe, but I do challenge myself to hold them in my mind and heart with respect and love as my fellow brothers and sisters. ( I'm not saint. Not virtue-signaling. ) Maybe many of them do as well ( Amish, Mennonites, Bruderhof, etc. ). Anyone, of any community/denomination, who fundamentally sows discord among the Church is committing an abomination before God. We should be very, very careful how we view our brothers and sisters in Christ.

They may seem nice on the surface, but the male leaders in these types of communities give me abysmal vibes. That dinner scene with the 'Mayor' and his family made me feel so depressed for that entire family, look at the girls' faces at 12:50 onwards. I've seen better vibes at a fucking funeral than that, and that's every single day of their life through no choice of their own. To me, this shit is absolutely disgusting and deeeeeeply sad.

In the last 100 years the planet lost more forest than it had in the previous 9000 years. And they do honour their promises. The community will build any creditors an entire residential sub division if that's what it takes to settle their debt. Whatever it takes,they have resources, they have networks. The guarantee from community is probably more solid than an insurance policy.

@@m_christine1070 Not likely they will build an entire community to pay off debts. It’s sort of like a co-op. Every family pays into it monthly. Brother belongs to one for health insurance. I believe it’s 500 a month for his family of four rather than over 2 grand a month for the AHCA. He’s a small business owner and has a ton of overhead with the buildings, employees etc.
