No CGI, no green screens, real ocean, real beach community and even real life people (the doctor was a real doctor in Edgartown, Martha's Vineyard). Notice also people on the beaches aren't super model types. Very authentic look and feel to this movie. 👍

"24 hours is like 3 weeks!" This refers to the fact that they do so much business in the summer, and particularly on Independence Day, that it is equal to 3 weeks business in the off-season. These people are so dependent on the summer business. They live through the off-season on what they can make in the summer. If summer business suffers, off-season life suffers.

The USS Indianapolis is in our history books. Although this is the largest mass animal attack in history, Quint's PTSD caused him to exaggerate a bit on the blame. He stated all the deaths were shark attacks when some bodies recovered showed the men had died from dehydration. "Jaws" made its mark on history for several reasons. This is the first movie that brought in the term "Summer Blockbuster". Jaws (and later Gremlins) gave reason for the creation of the PG 13 rating. Jaws made a huge impact on the world population of sharks in a bad way. It brought a huge fear of going into the ocean. Subsequently, the amount of professional shark hunters increased exponentially. Sharks were decimated like never before. It took environmental awareness to point out the damage we had been causing to the ocean's ecology. Populations of some shark species still hasn't recovered from the overhunting to this day.

Some tidbits you asked during the movie: Why does the mayor want people to go in the water? I think it’s about the image. The news is reporting live on the beach, so he wants everyone on the beach (and watching on tv) to see Amity as a place that’s ideal vacation resort for swimming. What’s wrong with Hooper’s Hands? The idea is that a hard worker will have rough, calloused hands, while a person that is lazy or doesn’t do any manual labor at all will have baby-soft hands. Quint saw that Hooper’s hands were soft, and therefore saw him as not the kind of guy that can work hard. Fishing for a living is surprisingly hard work.

Fun fact for you - when director Steven Spielberg first heard music composer John Williams play him the 4-note JAWS theme, he thought he was joking and said 'Okay so what's the real theme song you composed?' haha. After that, Spielberg had John Williams do the music for EVERY movie he made cause he was so brilliant. He even recommended Williams to his best friend, George Lucas, who was filming a new movie at the time, called STAR WARS. You know what's kind of funny? The early scene when they found Ben Gardner's boat was filmed at the very end in a swimming pool. To make it seem murky, Spielberg had them pour milk in the water. LOL, the guy was creative.

Sharks never stop moving, they have tp keep water flowing over their gills in order to breathe. The barrels tire the shark out, eventually immobilize him, and he "drowns"

JAWS was the first giant shark movie. Up until this time sharks in movies and t.v. shows were these dolphin sized fish so it came as a surprise to a lot of people that Great Whites grew 12 to 17 feet in length and fishermen had reported seeing them 20 feet long so the shark in the movie being 25 long seemed monstrous but believable.

She commented that she had played his mother so many years ago. The owner of the restaurant ran out to meet her - none other than Jeffrey Voorhees, who had played her son. They hadn't seen each other since the original movie shoot.

I can't believe the comments here about why Quint smashed the radio. On the boat, when the shark finally appeared and they were preparing to put the first barrel into it, Quint had to stop to take a radio call from Brody's wife. When the shark attacked the boat at night, knocking over the lantern, Quint had to tell Brody to put the fire out; Brody had jumped on the radio to call for help. Later, when they were trying to corral the shark with the barrels and it was all hands on deck, Brody once again ran to the radio to call for help. Quint finally had enough, lost his temper, and smashed the radio. That's all there is to it and please don't let anyone try to tell you otherwise.

You guys were great with this. I've seen this movie like a hundred times and never once wondered why Brody didn't call his wife after finding the girl's remains on the beach, OR ever considered the innocence of the tiger shark.

funny story: Steven Spielberg never intended to not show the shark until so late into the movie the animatronics were not cooperating all production so the editor and cinematographer used clever angles and shots to make the shark's presence and attacks more suspenseful and sinister this was one of the movies in history that had hair-pulling moments and stress that came to be all-time classics ironic right?

Part of Quint's motivation (why he smashed the radio) you can hear the FIRST time he gets on his boat radio: "Your husband’s all right, Mrs. Brody, he’s fishin’, he just caught a couple of stripers, we’ll bring ’em in for dinner, we won’t be long, we haven’t seen anything yet, over and out!" You can tell he's LYING to the people on land OTHERWISE 100 other little boats will come out there and ruin his $10,000. Now that the shark is tied to barrels it'll be easier to find and catch for OTHER people.

The 24 hours is like three weeks line gets everyone but it's actually true. This takes pace in the northeast were it gets cold. This is a tourist town so some of the businesses are only open for a few months when the tourist come and even the ones that can stay open all year make most of there money during tourist season. Quint smashed the radio because he didn't want to lose or have to share the reward money and he is driven by revenge after the Indianapolis.

I saw this at a drive in theater when it came out. My cousin drove, since he was old enough to have his drivers license and I got in the trunk to sneak in since I wasn’t big enough to get in (I think the movie was rated R).

I'm amazed that, in none of these reactions to Jaws that I've watched, has anyone drawn a parallel to the COVID lockdowns. Every reactor I've seen is in disbelief that the townspeople would be so resistent to closing the beaches because they're afraid of how it will affect their livelihoods, when only a couple of years ago, we literally went through exactly the same thing with the COVID lockdowns. Quint has survivor's guilt. I've probably seen this movie over 100 times in my life, and I now have concluded that Quint had a death wish. He never intended to return if he couldn't get the shark, straight out of Moby Dick, well, sort of. He destroyed the radio for a couple of reasons, one that I just realized, is that he's having a PTSD episode from being on the USS Indianapolis," when no communication had been sent." The other reason for it is he wants the bounty, aka "the glory," for himself.

Around the world, shark attacks are few and far between, in the oceans. No recorded shark attacks in swimming pools. Guess where I'm swimming. By the way, part of the inspiration for this film was a series of shark attacks in a river in New Jersey, sometime in the first half of the twentieth century. I believe the species of shark was a bull shark, since they're the only shark that ventures into fresh water.

It is possible to drown a shark. Sharks have primitive gills that require forward motion of water through their mouth and out across the gills. If the crew can drag the shark backwards long enough (or at least prevent forward motion long enough) tgey can driwn him.

Fish breath oxygen, just like people. Shallow water has a lot less oxygen in it so a panicking shark may suffocate, effectively drown, in shallows. Realistically, that wouldnt have worked. You'd need to get the fish in a few feet of water and that would have been a long way off and that boats draft would have prevented it.
