Stam Fine Reviews looks at the 1975 thriller, Jaws. Director Steven Spielberg's second film quickly became the highest grossing movie of all time, and redefined fishy aquatic death machine movies. Jaws stars Roy Scheider, Richard Dreyfuss, Robert Shaw, and Lorraine Gary with Bruce the Shark.
A shark terrorises a small seaside town on the eve of their biggest weekend. Chief Brody wants to shut the beaches, but the Mayor is having none of that, having bought shares in a company that sells wooden legs to shark victims.
Is Jaws enough to keep you away from the water?
Jaws will make you poop.

One of those films that make storytelling seem so easy, yet when you analyse it you realise how skilfully put together it is and how so many other flicks lack its finesse. One of the best movies ever made

The mayor’s anchor print coat was my favorite character. I wish they had done more with him.

Jaws is one of the few movies that I dont care where in the story I find it, that I will always sit and watch through to the end.

Still get chills when I watch it. The background music really makes it for me...that and Quints forced wistful smile as he tells the tale.

Apparently Robert Shaw reckoned the original version was FAAAAR too long, went outside, rewrote it, memorised it, got drunk and gave one of the best performances of the movie. Rutger did the same (without the getting drunk bit) for his final scene in Bladerunner: "........ time to die".

Before watching the review, I want to say I love this movie more every time I see it. Scheider, Dreyfus, and Shaw act the hell out of this. My favorite scene is the one below decks where they're comparing scars. Their showing that Quint and Hooper have more in common than is obvious and while he's been the middle man up to this point, Brodie, the land lubber, is standing apart; clearly and outsider. When they start singing, he comes closer. Then the mood shifts and Quint describes the Indiapolis sinking and it changes again as the shark starts attacking. No shark movie has come close to this kind of character work.

Another great moment is after the mother slaps Brodie, the mayor says she was wrong to blame the chief. Brodie is not going to deny his culpability even when everyone else is. He let the politicians and businessmen talk him out of doing what he knew was right and he's not letting himself off the hook for caving. The one saving grace of the second movie is that he learned his lesson even though no one else did. He didn't give up, even after they fired him.

Any review featuring helium-filled Oreos is a winner. 'Jaws' demonstrates just what can be achieved when you forgo technology and concentrate instead on imagination and creativity.

My brother, our two cousins and I went to see Jaws when it opened. The line was down the block. 4 teen boys of 15, 16.....by the climax of the movie we were in fetal positions in our seats....Whole theater was gripped...When Brody killed the shark, the whole crowd in the theater LEAPT to their feet and CHEERED....it was amazing

Great film, it is so closely tied to that mid 70's era too, hot summers with sun bleached faded photos, bellbottom jeans and Jaws... It's beautifully shot too, one of my favourites i think. Great review too. Thanks.

Peter Benchley who wrote it, also starred in it as the interviewer. This film is a classic but too many sequels in my opinion. Peter would later regret this film as it led to sharks being hunted and killed.

I recently watched jaws and the only thing that annoys me (apart from some of the home stuff with brody) is when quint goes nuts at the end. Its out of character and clearly just a set up for the big finish.
