I like the fact that Trevor gave him a slightly hard time and asked him some tough questions. Jay Shetty has marketed himself well and there is a use for what it does, but I prefer my monks to be more down to earth, like Sadhguru. But i appreciate Jay Shetty’s answer about letting the ego and attachment arise and grappling with those feelings to hold on to higher ideals.

It’s so trendy to say ex monk but in reality monks leave because it didn’t work and so hiding behind a great purpose for much more money is a handy response … I respect everyone’s path but maybe the book should say - why I’m no longer a monk?

Very Right Jay, Meditation is not silencing the mind. this is the biggest myth people have, which is why they think that they will never be able to meditate. However the fact is that everyone can and should meditate to calm the mind on a regular basis. make it a habit to deal with the stress and anxiety.

When everyone was freaking out over the book, I couldn't understand why. There are so many online resources where you can learn about Hinduism and monks. When I took a masters Buddhism & Hinduism class, so much material can be found for free.

As a Hindu, I sometimes feel that westerners sometimes appropriate asian culture too much and are led to believe it's somehow too mystique or exotic. Similarly with Chinese and Japanese buddhism.

I think western people are used to a mono culture. They like things streamlined rather than a lot. Hinduism and Buddism combined has so many philosophies, many contradictory, that its impossible to understand how it co exists unless you exist and grow up in the culture.

As long as there is a meditator there is no meditation. How can a mind meditate if it's full of fears, or is attached to something? Meditation is not repeating some words, sitting quietly cross-legged for 20 minutes in the morning, 20 minutes in the evening, all that nonsense. Go to India, there are still monks who live a completely detached life with barely any clothes on. That's what monks used to be in Ancient India. I do appreciate that, but the problem becomes when timings clash. People want to leave in the middle of meetings. Or wouldnt let anyone play music during holy month. Its a little overbearing and rigid and doesnt have wriggle room which is essential for a multi cultural society.
