In the English translations, everywhere where the word 'LORD' appears in capitle letters, there is in the original text YHWH, in Hebrew letters of course! - So it was in the past always! Nowadays biblesocieties are not anymore doing so with all the editions, because they know, people are too lazy to learn about the meaning behind the capital lettering of the word LORD! The biggest problem with the "spring" being at current day Mecca is that the city did not even exist at the time of Mohammed. Any so called "miracles" attributed to such a feature are solely due to random chance. I'm sure a lot of sick people drank water from the well and received no cure from it. Islam or the Saudis don't care to comment on that topic, nor do they want to comment on the lack of archeological artifacts that predate the year 800 AD in todays Mecca. Did olive trees or grapes ever grow there? Is there a spring there? Are the mountains described in the Quran at the right distances and do they match the Quranic description? The answer to all of these questions is No. You can prove what vegetation grew there even 10000 years later by looking at pollen in soil samples. You are literally praying to a false idol that did not exist in the time of Mohammed. You're praying in the wrong direction. Why would God care about what direction you pray anyway? The well allowed the tribe that had seized control of one of MANY, MANY pagan shrines in the region to settle there year-round and stop living as bedouins. (Why was there an official position of the food and water provisioner for pilgrims if there was water in Mecca? Of course there wouldn't be a need to provide water if there's a well!) With the well, they got wealthier, being able to save that money. And Mecca was just across the mountains from Jeddah, a locally important port in the slave trade especially but also other goods, and it could serve as an end-point for caravans that either supplied to or collected from local tribes. There is NO mention of spices or spice merchants in the ahadith or Ibn Ishaq. None. That's a later fabrication. There's lots of mention of leather and leatherworkers and also mention of dates. Those were the exports of Mecca. Even Saba, the nearest kingdom, had no awareness of the existence of Mecca. It couldn't have had more than 1000 people total in Muhammad's time, and that's pushing it. Remember that the Kaba was so incredibly unimportant beyond a strictly local sense that it didn't have a roof until Muhammad's lifetime. The people of Mecca didn't have the money to get wood beams shipped into Jeddah. They had to scrounge from a shipwreck. These were not wealthy people. They were very poor even for the area. Before the zim zam, Mecca was uninhabitable. But the zim zam was dug for the FIRST time by Muhammad's grandfather. If it had been dug before, why would anyone have made fun of him? Of course you'd redig the well! Why would they have waited a generation to do it, when there wasn't enough water to live there without the well? The issue is that there never was a well before his grandfather dug it. Of course it's utterly absurd to imagine that Hagar was teleported a thousand miles away, especially when the Bible says where she was (and it wasn't anywhere near Mecca). That was a fabrication to make the backwater little shrine seem more important. People had pretty much forgotten about the unimportant city of Mecca when the hadith collections were finally made and then they decided to put more importance on it because Muhammad had come to emphasize it. That's why the qiblas all had to be changed. They'd been pointing at Petra because the oral traditions of the ahadith weren't known to many people or considered very important, and the ruler was at Petra, and they'd been treating the ruler like the successor of the prophet far more literally up until that point.

By carefully looking at artifacts that are dug up, we can actually determine when those artifacts were put there. So, what do Saudi archeologists find at modern day Mecca? Nothing that predates 800 AD. That's over 150 years after Mohammed died. It was so embarrassing to Islam and the Saudis that they will not publish such findings. You can imagine what would happen to those archeologists if they did. Historically the first mention of Mecca was in around 741 AD. If we go by that, that's still 100 years after Mohammed died! In this case what we know historically and what we can observe through archeology agree almost perfectly with each other. Mecca does not appear on any maps until about 900 AD. That's over 250 years after Mohammed died. Islamic traditions (Hadiths) were written over 200 years after the death of Mohammed. They got a lot wrong, if we compare their account to what historically and scientifically we can determine. What people like Jay and Dan Gibson have to say has the backing of science and not some stories (Hadith) written down over 200 years later by someone who never met Mohammed. That's what makes any oral traditions in Islam unbelievable. The story of the Al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem is also unbelievable for those same reasons. Of course Muslims cannot accept this, or the idea that the Quran has changed over time. It throws doubt on all the oral traditions of Islam and the truth of the religion itself. That's why you see Muslims making the most ridiculous excuses for why such findings cannot possibly be correct. Unfortunately for them, facts are facts, and can't be changed unless some convincing evidence is presented. At this point, any such evidence is probably manufactured and not real.

I think you misunderstood. There are only 3 prayers in the Quran and no evidence that people were praying 5 times a day until 200 years after, when the ahadith were compiled. Jay Smith is arguing that they are most likely added in the ahadith due to the influence of the rulers who compiled the Quran. In the ahadith, we find the last two prayers dated to about AD 624. I don't think that everything that can't be proved to exist before the 9th century only dates to the 9th century. I think that the oral tradition wasn't widely known and that the successors of Muhammad took much of their authority from their succession and had severely downplayed Muhammad until then. The Quran was not being copied faithfully. It was not known to many people. The tradition of the qibla was shifted to Petra because Muhammad's successor was there. It was only with the work of compiling the Quran (again!) and that ahadith (for the first time) that a lot of what Muhammad had said was restored. The lack of the five prayers in the Quran shows how incomplete the Quran is, however, and how completely insufficient for understanding what a Muslim is supposed to do. Allah said that the Quran was eternal and perfect, so don't you think that how to do the Five Pillars should be in there? It's not, though. You can't have Islam without leaving what is supposed to be the exact words of God. That should really trouble you, that God would send down, from his LAST PROPHET, something so incomplete. All of the variants in the Quran as attested in the ahadith and as shown in the early transcripts further show that what you have now is not exactly what Muhammad said. Not only are surat and ayat missing, but some that Umar considered crucial, like the aya of stoning, was entirely lost early in the history of Islam.
