Hey man sick tutorial. I stopped listening to hip hop rap at the turn of the 2000s just as the style changed from that gritty nature I enjoyed. These days I produce Techno and House more so but you really nailed that old vibe in modern times 💯 scored a sub man.

In survival of the fittest havoc used the sample at 2 different pitches and played them as notes. Such a subtly complex touch, and I think if your sample switch pitches throughout the song it could give it more depth
