Jayce is an ELITIST SELLOUT! || With season 1 of Netflix’s Arcane available, the League of Legends animated series tells the origin stories for lots of its champions like Vi, Jinx, Caitlyn, Ekko and Viktor. But in the case of Jayce, the creator of Hextech, the use of Piltover’s classism and elitism against Zaun not only shows how he became an elitist sellout because of it, but provides ways to see how classism and elitism affects others because of it.

I really loved the scene where Jayce realized he killed a child and Vi is like "that's how it is down here." It illustrates SO well the privileges that those in Piltover have over those in Zaun. They don't have to witness child labor and child death. They don't have to actually physically see what is truly going on in Zaun. And the way that Jayce just backs out of his alliance with Vi over that one fight really shows so well just how privileged the politicians/council members of Piltover are. They make the big decisions, they sign the papers, they make the agreements, but they never have to actually understand what they're doing. It's like they're exempt from consequence and experiencing tragedy. Also, Jayce's agreement with Silco really set this in stone. They agreed on Zaun's independence at some dock at sunset. No fights, no blood. It represents so well how those with high status make decisions without having to truly feel the impact of those decisions. I loved this video, I was having trouble figuring out my opinion on Jayce and this really helped. Wonderful job!

Arcane's depiction of how many shades of morality there are in Piltover is my favorite part. I think Heimerdinger is another interesting character by how he failed to be a leader. We learn has an eye from talented scholars, having mentored Viktor despite being from the under city, but is overly cautious, completely dismissive of the idea of Hextech until being shown it works, and then again with Viktor's Hexcore, outright refusing to look into theories and studies for fear of the knowledge being potentially destructive, admittedly from what does seem to be PTSD from some magical catastrophy a long time ago. On top of that however, Hiemer is also Piltover's founder, and has been around for its entire existence, yet seems blissfully unaware of the horrible class divide as well the corruption in the council of his own city. Despite Piltover being the "City of Progress", its founder is remarkably ignorant and stagnant until the final act where he goes to Zaun to see just how miserable life there has become.

One of my favorite parts was how he was absolutely floored when he saw the the section of the trenches that Ekko has refurbished into a safe haven for his gang and that it could've been made by people so young. It really did show how out of touch he was about what mortal people are capable of, and you can just see him relearning old lessons he had long forgotten.

I find Mel such a fascinating character because of how she is both divorced from her Noxian upbringing but still tie down to it. she really believed she was uplifting this brilliant, handsome visionary. When really she was just repeating her mother's manipulations, despite how much she despises her own mother for how she operates... among other things.

What love about Arcane is Powder. I relate to her issues of abandonment, loss, and wanting to be helpful in a way I thought wouldn't be possible. I know it seems really cliche to say, but she is my first real, comfort character that I can sympathize with, but not be an apologist for the acts she commits.

You'd love She-Ra, especially Entrapta. Her story also deals heavily with abandonment and struggles to fit in and be helpful. She doesn't undergo the same sort of downward spiral that Jinx does, but since Entrapta is written as autistic, she struggles with social interaction. She's a scientist and while she doesn't normally intend to cause harm with her experiments, instead wanting to help, she's often so invested in the science, (one of her special interests,) that she forgets to account for safety. [MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD] This leads to some of her experiments in the early seasons having rather disastrous consequences that would be taken a lot more seriously if it weren't for the show's TV-Y7 rating.

My favorite thing to poke fun at in Arcane is the old "I never imagined my technology would be used as a weapon"-scientist trope. Like, he builds giant turbo-charged fists, and a hammer that shoots blasts of arcane plasma like a cannon, and he's thinking "these will only be useful in mining and smithing". The show is not without its flaws, but it is really surprisingly good.

I appreciate Arcane's politics and showing that class struggles/revolution/vigilantism is a complex and multi faceted issue. It isn't just about bad people wanting power. It can be about good people causing struggles they don't know about or can't fix because of the complex web of favour and partnership. Even the double agent angle that they showed with Vander and the prior chief was well done.

The b.s. is the "good people" know about the toxin and all other problems they are creating. They know they are opressored and they are taking everying from the opressed (ressources, labour). This is one of those series where I never really disliked any of the characters. Everyone just feels so real and human, and every character has redeemable qualities. This story is a tragedy where there are no one-dimensional heroes or villains. And honestly, that’s all that really matters to me. Trying to decry or lionize individual characters isn’t interesting to me. I just want to understand them, and Arcane absolutely succeeds in helping the audience to understand the characters.

Actually, part of the deal for the undercitys independence is that Silco shuts down his production of shimmer. Like Vi said, Silco controls the undercity through shimmer. To add on, arresting his second in command/daughter makes Silco even more vulnerable that the power over Zaun is up in the air. So NO, Jayce isn’t giving Silco the keys to Zaun. He’s simply giving the undercity a TRUE shot at being independent now that the power is up for grabs, giving the undercity an opportunity to start from scratch and build their own government
@MYoung23
@MYoung23 2 жыл бұрын
Arcane is also about capitalism. Piltover's technocracy thrives and gets its wealth by maintaining a permanent underclass. The ruling class maintains that order by the Enforcers. Jace is emblematic of how the ruling class will elevate those from the underclass deemed special and like those folks often do Jace just maintains the existing order. Leaving the undercity to be independent under Silko without a redistribution of resources and wealth just turns it into a Bantustan where nothing would really change let alone the people living there being free. There are really a lot of fascinating class and capitalism readings you can get with Arcane. La'Ron touches on it when few, if any, KZfaqrs will.

Nothing you have noted here is unique to Capitalism - in fact, Piltover is far, FAR closer to Feudal/Noble societies than Capitalist societies. You have a Ruling council, who are entirely disconnected from everything. You have all the major resources and wealth tied up in a Noble class, who are Noble by birth, not by action. You have a gatekeeping institution (the Academy) controlled by that Noble class which is the ONLY way for people outside of that Noble class to get ahead. You funnel all official progress through that institution so that the noble class can control it - literally controlling all the progress. All trade in the city is controlled by that Noble class. At no time does literally buying your way into power enter any conversations, at all. It's not even clear that money can get you ahead in Piltover, which is one of the few unique hallmarks of Capitalist societies - in a Capitalist society, you can brute-force your way to the top with money in ways you can't do in any other kind of society. There's no indication that this is possible in Piltover, or if anyone even considers it a possibility. The fact that no one even considers going behind the Council's back to create and sell Hextech to the masses is a very, VERY powerful piece of evidence that Capitalism is not even present in Piltover as a concept. There wasn't even the idea to rally the people to oppose the Council (something that is powerful in Capitalism, but not unique to it) - the ONLY thought was how to control the Council in order to enact the changes they wanted to enact. It could even be argued that far from being a Capitalist Society, Piltover is the ANTITHESIS of a Capitalist society. Hell, if anything, ZAUN is the Capitalist side in this equation. ZAUN is the one who is turning to Capitalism (the darker, shadier, ethic-less side of Capitalism that no one with a moral compass supports). It's in Zaun where Money brings you power. It's Zaun where Money and Power is what rules, not some council (They tried to set up their own council, but it was made crystal clear that the council is not particularly powerful - Silco is where all the power is, and he's allowing others to have power as long as it works in his favour) or Gov't of any kind. It's in Zaun where you see the excesses of the Industrial Revolution associated with Capitalism (the kids working in the Chemtech factory), where you see life being reduced to a monetary value, where "You're dead because you're costing me money." is exposed. Zaun is where your name means nothing, and it's all about what you as an individual can bring to a situation. (how many of those Piltover councilors earned their place by deeds, and how many were simply born in the right house at the right time, and were handed the seat by inheritance, I wonder?) While the kids working in unsafe conditions and life being reduced to an arbitrary value have also been around far longer than Capitalism... the depictions of it in Arcane are most definitely drawing on the critiques of Capitalism, so absolutely deserve to be mentioned here. Piltover is Aristocracy run amok, only with a Technological flavour instead of a Medieval flavour. Zaun is Robber Baron Capitalism run amok, with the twist that the oppressed underclass (which has been present in all civilizations we've ever known about, far before Capitalism) has turned to Capitalism in a desperate search for something to fight their Noble Class oppressors with.

He gives a brief overlook of all the characters background, their art (which is his main thing) and honestly does a very nice job of telling League lore to the layman. As someone who hasn't touched anything LoL related at all before Arcane, I honestly really enjoyed how the "good guy" aesthetics of Piltover was merely a veil for the massive amounts of corruption, elitism, and oppression of the city and ruling class as a whole, when I first started the show I didn't think they'd go that way but am nonetheless really happy they did. I just finished S1 of Arcane (and cannot wait for more!) and I love it SO MUCH, both in a technical sense and in a narrative one. First off, I LOVE the animation- a beautiful blend of hand-drawn and CGI animation. The art style is very stunning, so visually appealing, and all the colors, shading, and lighting is 10/10. The cinematography was also quite well done as well. In terms of the narrative and story, it was also great- the characters, the themes, how they development with each episode, the relationships between characters were beautiful to see- it was all stellar. I loved the designs of the characters and the world as well, all amazing (and so many of the characters were SO HAWT, holy damn). I really did like how they handled the thematic elements, the struggle between the upper and lower cities, the division caused by elitism and the elites who many of which have their own goals and agendas, even in the Undercity. Corruption is everywhere, wherever you go, it's all a matter of how shiny and pretty it is. I would go more into detail, but everyone else has already done that and did so much better than I could (I'm not typically great with descriptions and words, which sucks for me as someone who wants to be a writer, because you kinda need to be good at that, lol). All-in-all, LOVED IT- and again, the characters… SO GAHDDAMN HAWT. Anyways, that's all from me!

Yes! Another angle on Jayce's story arch that really stood out to me was its parallels with Silicon Valley sort of progressivism. @@tempesttossed6029 I don't think there's anything filmsy with any of the characters. The act of paralleling one character's arc and actions is dependent on how the viewer interprets the text. Like, I said Heidegger and Vander. Both have symmetry to their character. Knowing about Heidegger's immortality and Vander's previous as a failed revolutionary just cements that, in my opinion. Of course, there is a 2nd season under development and it took 6 years to develop the first season and it'll more likely further empathize more of this stuff.

As a player I've been going on with my boyfriend on who was which character. Connecting dots and hyping us up even more. Jayce, for me, was the boy who gets thrown into power and gets used to benefit others. And although Jayce plays a big role in the story, every character in it has their flaw and are going to have so much impact on Zaun and Piltower. The only thing I would have to critique, is that some characters that play a massive role in the lore have kinda been pushed back to secondary/tertiary roles (will probably see more in next season). At last, I would love to see a series on Demacia and their anti-magic radicalism. Actually I rlly hope Riot won't stop at Arcane and start developing a LOLCU

I know that this is late, but I was curious about your thoughts on something. Is morality real? What I mean to say is, by definition morality is defined as: 'principles concerning the distinction between right and wrong or good and bad behavior.' But are those principals real, or are they internal stimuli brought about by situational responses to one's environment? As stated in your review, Jayce starts out rather idealistic, loses everything, becomes depressive, gains everything back, and then has another depressive episode upon seeing the consequences of what is happening because of his inventions, and in that his 'morality' or rather his response to his situation wildly changes. Going from hopeful and naive to suicidal to fearful and defensive until he finally reaches a certain level of disinterested apathy, his morals seem to shift based on what happens to him, and this reminds me of many other characters who go through supposed arcs or character growth. Anakin Skywalker: From a hopeful, if somewhat frustrated young Jedi, to a depressive and angry young man, to finally a cruel yet dutiful Sith by the time Luke becomes of age to fight. His morals continuing to change depending on what happens to him at whatever point in his life they come about. Then there's Shinji Ikari himself, who starts off depressed and lonesome and ends somewhere between psychotic and narcissistic by the end of the first round of Evangelion after ending up on the beach with Asuka(?) not counting the 'congratulation ending' since I'm of the opinion that all of that was just in his head. There's Sam Raimi's Spider-Man, who goes from an indifferent individual before his uncle's death, to becoming a depressive vigilante in an attempt to atone for what he felt was his mistake, to turning away from his 'moral code' once his stress and anxiety levels hit critical mass, to returning to what he was, to becoming an angry and almost vengeful individual when the symbiote attaches to him, those as audience members know that creature only brings out what's inside someone and not create emotions. All of these characters change their stances about their thoughts on the world around them because of their personal experiences, and this their morality continually shifts, so much so that they become wildly different, as opposed to Javert from Les Miserable who continuously holds onto his stated morality and finally kills himself once that morality is met with confusion and disbelief at human response to what he considers to be right and wrong. This is why I wanted your opinion on morality, and its validity or not.

I play Runeterra, another game from this universe. I can honestly say that this show improved my opinion of every single Champion character except Jayce, and even he's in the "love to hate" category. They did an especially good job giving Jinx a facelift, taking her from an obnoxious brat who I found more annoying than any other character in the game, to the most sympathetic character in at least the first act of Arcane and debatably the second and third. Now when I encounter her in game, I feel a little sad for her. Like Jinx, I also feel more invested in the in-game versions of Viktor, Caitlyn, Ekko and Vi, since I know more about who they are, where they came from and how they got to where they are in the game. I liked seeing the subtle hints to the people they will become, both in terms of characterization and gameplay. Since only Jinx really caught up to her champion self, there's a lot more to explore next season and I'll be excited to see how they handle it. Heimerdinger is the one oddball, as he goes on and on about safety in Arcane, while in Runeterra he's standing atop a giant mechanical T-Rex with rocket launchers. I'm definitely excited for more of his story next season, but man, Heimer has a long way to go before he catches up to the game.

Did you go through the In-Client game that came out with Arcane, where you were playing the part of a literal League player brought into Runeterra by some accident? If you haven't, part of that *non-canon!* game was that there was a multiverse, and one of the missions Heimer sent you on was to find another Heimer to get a second opinion from. That second Heimer? Every answer was "A TURRET!", with the occasional "A BIGGER TURRET!". I think what they're saying with that was that Arcane was a different reality than League of Legends or Runeterra, so our favourite little "How am I going to stop some big mean mother hubbard from tearing me a structurally superfluous new behind? The answer...use a turret. And if that don't work ...use more turret." Heimer from League and Legends of Runeterra isn't the same as the Heimer from Arcane.

But don’t you think that an arrogant person wouldn’t be so hesitant? Jayce still opens up to people like heimerdinger and vi. For instance, jayce wanted to start selling the updated gemstones, yet he decides to set back those plans for security purposes. On the other hand, Vi stood with him as he was the only councilor who wanted to take action for the underground’s sake. In short, Jayce is open-minded, perhaps too open-minded, and makes sacrifices, whether it’d be the financial hit his business will take for postponing his groundbreaking product, or that he accepts the fact that his days as a councilor are, most likely, over.

Maybe that's because he felt bland because he felt like the only cis het guy in the entire show's main cast, but maybe there's some other reason idk. Like he was very human, making very human decisions, I just thought they were boring and predictable. Every time he was on screen I just wanted to get back to Ekko or Jinx or Silco or Vi or Cait or Mel or Viktor. My main issue with Arcane is the ending. It felt like the story was trying to glaze over both Jayce and Silco's darker aspects - Silco becomes the 'tragic father' whose love for Jinx was real (ugh) and Jayce offering the Undercity to him is framed as a good thing for Zhan. The council agreeing to ceed its authority before Jinx blew them up is supposed to be tragic, right? (There could've been peace but now oh no, you used violence so there has to be war) That doesn't discount from the show's better aspects... Idk, I have other issues with the ending, maybe I'm just being grumpy and seeing things that aren't there.
@jdellabeat6245
@jdellabeat6245 2 жыл бұрын
I don't see it as tragic at all. As Reedus pointed out, Jayce is effectively just throwing his hands up and said, "I give up. I rather be here than there" It's basically just cementing that Piltover is just ignoring its own issues rather than actively like giving health care to people on the street.

@@jdellabeat6245 I can see that read, but I don't think that's the show's read. This makes the ending make no sense. There's this sad tragic song, closing out with 'what could have been' as Jinx's blast hits the council chamber. Silco, stressed and seemingly honest, tells Vander that its 'everything we ever wanted'. The two points stressed about the accord are that Zahn will be autonomous, and that this deal will stop any fighting. The show really seems to think the deal is a good thing. If it doesn't, why make that ending so downbeat? Wouldn't this be happy? Silco is dead, the deal gone, and a revolution coming. "What could've been? Err... probably a kinda crappy timeline with a drug boss. Revolution time, baby!" That's not saying the deal *is* good, it ain't, just that the show thinks it's good. It feels like Arcane just sorta forgot that Silco is this tough crime boss who ruins lives once we get to act three. He's shown as politically weak, physically trembling, and shown to genuinely care about Jinx. There's nothing in his conversation with Jayce that really supports the idea that this deal will profit him specifically - logically that's the case, but the story's more interested in the ideological temptation of giving the would be Founder of Zahn exactly what he wanted. 'This will turn me a tidy personal profit' never seems to enter into it.

@@Croakamancer Thanks. I think you have a really good reading of Silco. TB Skyen, who I've mentioned for the third time now lol, said in a livestream before the final act was released, "Silco is politically unfulfilled" or something to that effect. Silco strives for Zahn to be independent, but the problem lies in how he's going to implement change. The show never gave us his policies or reforms. My largest problem with Arcane is that seems very one-sided about the struggle between Piltover and Zaun. "Topside" characters usually the heroes, and even if they misguided have the ability to change. Heimerdinger may has benevolent reasons, however unintentionally caused all the problems which the Undercity face in the day to day basis. However when realized that, joined the Firelights and going to be a nice foil to the explosive Ekko. His "counterpart" Silco, wasn't that lucky. I was really worry they do the same with Viktor, specially that his character is more extremist in the game. Look at how he and Jayce was presented after they murdered someone accidentally: even Vi justified the action of the Golden Boy of Piltover, however the Machinist shown as one step ahed to doom. I may just pissed off, because hoped for that Noxus will act as a common enemy for the last three episodes, and will force the champions of the Two Cities for a cooperation. Regardless I hope Jayce will get a transformation, similar to Jinx between the time-skip. If she was the outsider of the Undercity, Jayce should be the tyrant of the Topside.

Arcane was an absolutely incredible experience. To be quite honest I've genuinely never been so torn about a character as I have with Silko. We understand exactly why he wants a revolution, hell we SEE it in the first minute of episode one. But at the end of the day, in trying to achieve his (admittedly admirable) dream of a Zaun free from Piltover's iron grip, he's become a very brutal oppressor himself. "Capitalistic Ladder that is Classism" No. No this is not a valid comment at all. Classism has existed for far longer than Capitalism. Classism will exist far after Capitalism has eaten itself out of existence. Classism is a fundamental aspect of Humanity (not merely Civilization, but humanity as a species), which will exist in whatever society we create in the future. The ONLY thing Capitalism does with Classism is put a (perhaps literal) Monetary Value on Classism in a Capitalistic society. You take that away, you will still have Classism, just using different ways to measure how and when to apply the Classism. Comments like this make people believe that if you get rid of Capitalism, you get rid of Classism. ("Classism is a Capitalistic ladder, so get rid of Capitalism, get rid of that Capitalistic ladder and no more Classism!") No. You don't. Don't merge Classism and Capitalism - they have to be kept separate. Capitalism eventually uses Classism to perpetuate itself, but ALL systems do that. "The Party" and "Not the Party" in China is Communistic Classism. Same in North Korea, where there isn't even the possibility of any kind of Capitalistic interference arguments. The Church and the Laypeople is Classism in a Theocracy. Hereditary Chiefs and everyone else in Tribalistic societies. Etc. Merging Classism and Capitalism is a terrible, TERRIBLE thing to do. You can get rid of Capitalism. You can't get rid of Classism. Forgetting that can lead to the kind of purges we saw in the 20th century, which was Classism taken to murderous extremes and not a speck of Capitalism in sight for most of them. (and even where it was potentially in sight... it's one hell of a stretch)
